A video showing how to tie a Balanced Leech Bugger and then water testing it to see what is the best, air balanced at the vise or water tested, for perfect balance. You will have to watch the video to see the results, but either way should fish pretty good. I secured both flies to a loose improved clinch knot to make sure I could hold the fly, but allow the knot to move freely similar to a This is a color combo I have had some luck with in the past, especially the orange tungsten head. I usually fish these under an indicator on still water with floating line and have had really awesome results this spring. Tie some up in your favorite color combos and give them a try.

I would imagine if your using a tailing material that's more sparse or has less lift you might want something with less angle to be water balanced at that point

Correct. Although I’ve used bucktail as tailing material and the water balance isn’t too far from this angle generally speaking. I think the shank length of the hook, wire diameter, gape and bead size affect the balance the most. Best thing to do is to tie one, remember the placement and position, and test it. Then adjust accordingly if needed.

@Svenddiesel I tied one up yesterday that I lost and am trying to replicate with better water balance it was just a little more air balanced hopefully I have it this time but I would think the angle of my hook is 23 degrees maybe a little steeper but I do have a longer shank than the hook your using

Nice tie mate. This fly style been a mainstay for my still-water nymphing down here in NZ last 2 years. I even got lazier this year and used same tail with UV med Polar chenille (from Hareline) body. Also killer in Black on cloudy days. Thanks for vid..

What size bead do you use for size 6 hook.
@Svenddiesel
@Svenddiesel 5 лет назад
John Meyer so for a size 8 I used a 5/32 and 1/8 so I assume for a size 6 you could be fine with a 5/32 depending on how you like to cast them and how fast you want it to sink. I usually go heavier/ step up a bead size.

Great tie and video. Have you tried using any other style of pin on your balanced flies? I used to use a pin similar to yours, but lately I have been doing them with sequin pins. They are a little shorter, and since I primarily tie size 10 and 12 leeches they are already a perfect length without having to cut them.

so originally I was using small nails because I liked the added weight. Ill have to check those out. Thanks for sharing.

@@Svenddiesel you're welcome. Phil Rowley from Canada is who I learned that tip from. It's worked well for me, and I think it will work well you also.

Chris Ashby so what size and length of sequin pins do you use so it’s prefect for 10 and 12s

@@Svenddiesel I'll look and see if I can find the package to know for sure. If my memory serves me right they only came in one size. I picked them up at hobby lobby but i have seen them at Walmart as well by the other pins.

@@Svenddiesel they are a size 8 and are a 1/2 inch long (13mm) they are made by Dritz

The fish don't care if the lire is balanced. They will bite on it either way. I don't know why some fly tyers have to be perfect.
@Svenddiesel
@Svenddiesel 5 лет назад
that is exactly why I made the video. Add a little wind or a drift and there is so much variance that a perfectly balanced bugger leech wont ever be balanced. However, if your hook is wrapped around your tippet like a weed guard due to being so unbalanced that will affect the hook up ratios for sure even with 6x tippet maybe.

I also forgot that these flies are deadly for fishing smallmouth bass with fly rod or spinning rod and weighted bobber.

John Meyer I’ll have to try it once it warms up a little more here. Thanks for the tip
