Telescopes need to be balanced to reduce gear wear and ensure better tracking. In this video, I cover balancing a fork-mounted telescope.

magnetic or / and velcro is useful for balancing. I will try clamps also.

Hi Moose! As an aside, the topical playlists are a good alternative to the second channel. So bravo on that one! I myself am enjoying all of this content.

Hi there, Moose... Hoping you could help. Have you ever shot a video with a smaller scope piggy-backed on the top of the main scope? My challenge is balancing the scope of a piggy=backed scope is on the top. It's not very easy to balance with a scope in the place where the weight should go.

Thanks for the video it was very informative. I have a fork mounted c8 and getting it balanced cab be a challenge but your video gave me new insight into how to proceed. Clear Skies.

Thanks. As you said there are scores of videos about balancing a GEM, but not so much for yoke mounts. Same thing for cable management. Finding cable management ideas for a yoke mount is really hard, even on Cloudy Nights.
@MooseHenderson1
@MooseHenderson1 Год назад
I had not noticed that but you are correct, yoke mounts have some special considerations for cable management. Not harder or easier than GEM, just different.

Just found this video in my suggested list. I have a NexStar 11 which I use fork mounted also. Balancing is not hard but whoever designed the fork arms really blew it as they did not give us any options for adding weights to the arms properly. They designed them to be able to lift the scope with handholds but didn't put anywhere to add counter weights...

Adding fork weights is very difficult

@@MooseHenderson1 You also didn't catch my error there! I should have typed 'wedge' mounted since it IS a fork regardless of how you use it! lol

Excellent presentation of Dec & RA balancing of Fork Mounted SCT's. I have a question, how to balance a CPC-1100 GPS XLT without a wedge. Thanks!
@MooseHenderson1
@MooseHenderson1 Год назад
It would be same for the forks, balance the tube between forks using some form of weights after attaching any cameras, guide telescopes, etc

Hi Moose. I'm only understanding about half of this. Do you have to go through this everytime you use it or only if you move it from point a to point b?
@MooseHenderson1
@MooseHenderson1 2 года назад
One needs to balance the scope each time something ys added or substrates but it us pretty quick procedure once you get it established

in the market for a Celestron C11. Can't decide between a fork mounted with wedge vs getting a Tube with a different mount for astrophotography

@@MooseHenderson1 I'm sorry that you're selling your setup :( was looking forward to what sort of images you'd be able to produce out in the wilderness. I'm currently in the process of selling my Indian Motorcycle to fund this. Upgrading from the old 10" Orion Dob. If it wasn't a fork mount, I may consider. The expenses of getting a Celestron CGX-L for optimal tracking would be another $5k ontop of buying the setup would far exceed my budget. Still, you have done a lot, given what you have. It's a powerful scope and I've seen some of it's potential images. Like, the image of M64 Galaxy is REALLY COOL given how difficult it is to see. I'm always learning, so seeing others go ahead and do what they do, I learn as well from their rich experience. I hope something reignites your interest in the hobby. It's a tough one, but you're a resourceful guy. Good teacher vibes too to boot
