This is the real take. I think Yahtzee made a video pointing out that most of this hype is due to the context of so much early access and incomplete stuff, rather than being completely on its own merits.
yep, i have 2 playthroughs under my belt and i experienced many bugs, performance issues and so much content was cut that even the companion quests got cut out for some reason.@@elvenadohostil8607
@Jabrownie23 What a stupid take. I don't say that often. That's like saying to a food review person. You're biased. You like pizza better than steak... Of course he has preferences. That doesn't mean his review is any less credible whether the cRPG is bad OR good. Just admit you wanted him to not like the game😂
if the player base is demanding a DLC you know you've made a 10/10 game EDIT 9/12/2023: GAME OF THE YEAR LETS GO!!! Edit #2: Sadly Larian said there will be no DLC ever.
Keep in mind Stellaris was intentionally made very bland, so Paradox Interactive can push out DLC after DLC for the solo purpose of cash grab mostly :(.
@@orrissonpereira1070 they probably will after Dread Wolf drops in. They most likely don't have recourses for remaster with ongoing projects and layoffs.
BG3 is the first game in a very long time where I'm actually happy I bought it at full price. Larian deserves every last penny for the work they've done.
I must admit, I can't help by be a tad proud of my fellow countrymen. A Belgian game developer not only making a good game but making a great game that is appreciated across the world. A game that is made for the gamer not for the stockholders. Something that all those big American, British or French game studios haven't been able to do for over a decade.
and for the second time. I personally think Divinity Original Sin 2 is one of the better CRPGs of all time. Like, top 5. They took everything they learned from it and applied it here and it shows. Outstanding work by Larian.
I think the thing that actually sold me was in the spider pit of act 1, there is a hole just in the middle of the room you can jump into, I thought, hey the game won't let me do this, and I jumped down the hole and went splat in a cutscene... I then tried again with feather fall thinking it's just going to instantly kill me again, but no, I survived and went right into the underdark... and died as two minotaur's came over to wreck my level 2 party.
The rune checkpoint actually gave me small nudge cuz I was thinking why would they put it near the end of a dungeon when other checkpoints tend to have different pathway you can go to. Really a ligh bulb moment when I found out my ans.
Where can you go to the underdark from the spider pit? I went into the cave, but found nothing there. You mean the spider pit in the goblin camp right?
@@norberthresko8154 The blighted village well right next to the checkpoint, look inside and you find a fairly tough mini boss, or you can just shove her off a cliff... In the middle of the room is a big hole with a web over the top, you can jump down that, don't forget the necromancer book in the apocathary, the boss guards a gem you need to open it. And don't go down expecting a fun time, your meant to be at least level 3 before hitting the underdark with some gear.

I am 42 years old and I never thought a game would make me happy ever again. I finished it in 143 hours, and only discovered 53% of the content. I plan to play it again with the dark urge. It is quite frankly the best game of the last 10 years IMO.
I'm 47 and ABSOLUTELY agree with you! I had over 150 hours in the open Beta just F-ing around, and now am playing through a second time after buying it for my uncle so he could play through together and I can see how his choices and rolls differ. I told him when we started I would NOT tell him anything other than suggesting to SAVE OFTEN...lol...this is gonna be fun!!!
Im 39 and been playing rpgs since before windows times... this is the best RPG i ever played hands down. I Played 170 hours on one playthrough and got obout 70% of the achievements I think... but really you know that you can replay it and do so much stuff differently on the second go. This game is a generational cornerstone no matter the discourse and artificial controversy that surrounds that fact. We will be getting more games like these and Larian will cement itself as the leading force behind it with many trying to achieve this level of mastery. We are witnessing Fromsoft/Dark Souls level of game design impact on the industry that is for sure.
Im 42 as well. Might be the best game ive ever played. And thats at launch! Usually i wait a year to play rpgs so they are patched. Yes there are bugs but even now its easily as playable as other rpgs after a year.
Holy shit that did not feel like 51 minutes. This was one hell of a review Joe! Had my full attention the entire time and got me laughing throughout the video.
He didnt mention it but this game has 4 player couch co-op on console and its amazing and perfectly integrated, not enough games care about couch co-op anymore
This is what I want to hear. I have ranted against the TB combat since the game was announced. if enough people like you recommend it, I will be encouraged to get it.
My barbarian just killed two dudes with a sword, picked off a third with a bow, then picked up one of the dead dudes at her feet and threw it at another guy for a fourth kill. The turn-based combat is REALLY versatile.
@@blackcaesar8387 I think a lot of people who aren't fans tb combat, who like this one is how you open you are to even start most fights. You don't have to be honest and start fights fairly "wink" or you can even get some bosses to kill themselves haha. Also your environment in fights do matter.
@@blackcaesar8387 Give it a try. Once you see how it is, you'd actually be glad that it is turn-based. It just makes it far more strategic and deliberate than anything real-time can possibly offer.
@@blackcaesar8387 It's a different type of turn based combat, not like JRPG which is very static and I 100% can see how that looks boring to people. The TB is more like xcom, which (imo) is even better with the amount of freedom, spells, action you can do
Just started playing it yesterday and for a guy who neither likes nor plays such games (CRPGs), I simply LOVE IT! What a fool I have been! The best thing about this game is the love and passion that went into making it: a true, pro-comsumer piece of art.
There's so many things you can do. Hell, last night I found a pair of magic rings where one takes the injury for the other and the journals from the husband and wife. The husband kept getting injured again and again and eventually died, and the wife was living with throwing caution to the wind knowing her husband is suffering for her and reveling in it because she was an evil worshipper. And that's just two random items with nothing pointing you towards them. They're just some environmental storytelling.
I just finished 600+ hours of BG3 (3 runs with three different main characters). There are bugs in Chapter 3 they need to fix but still the best game of the year and possibly the decade. The bar has been set very high by Larian and I can't wait for the Neverwinter DLC.
Seeing Joe in the first few MINUTES just talking praise of a game and him explaining it in pure delight is pure magic. More power to games of this incredible caliber (and thanks a ton for Joe on the review, of course).
I'm sitting at over 800 hours played and not only do I not feel the need to play something else, but I'm still discovering new things. Incredible game.
You could always try out Larian's excellent previous game if you haven't already. Divinity Original Sin 2. Its a different game system but a lot of similarities
I feel like this is one of the few times where AJ and every other reviewer dropped a game review so late and so close to eachother due to how massive the game is
@@theduck2970Act 1 can take you up to like 60 hours if you do all the content. It’s nuts. And it’s great. Act 2 much the same. Act 3 suffers a little bit bc it’s not finished. That’s what the early reviewers didn’t talk about because they couldn’t have gotten there yet.
@@Sindrella. Sounds about right. As someone who played 180 hours of EA, I went through ALL of act 1 content (before entering shadowfell) in 36 hours according to my save file so I can only imagine it'd be double or triple that for newer players
@@CLARENCErr Yes. Between exploring, figuring out buffs, dealing with vendors, finding dyes and meticulously dying my Adamantine armour, etc. it took me roughly 50 hours on Act 1 content alone. This is including the githyanki crèche plot and my couple hours spent trying to figure out the Blood of Lathander subplot in the monastery without a guide. If the whole game was as strong and varied as Act 1, it would be literally perfect for me. The writing just started to sour in Act 2, especially with companions like Karlach.
The amount of creativity the game lets you have is insane. Pushing people off ledges, throwing environmental objects, freezing water on the ground randomly or lighting oil on fire, stacking crates to get to knew areas, etc etc etc there’s just so much going on that’s outside of whats the forward hand hold mechanics.
@@saratchandramv1886 ''Also talking with dead (whom u killed) w/ disguise spell'' -- damn... finished the game and never thought to try it, so that's how it works!! creative :D
What’s crazy to me is how much fun this game is for any player who is even slightly creative, but some of the stuff is absolutely insane. If owlbear from the top rope has been discovered in the first couple months who knows what’ll be discovered a year from now once people break the game apart
Honestly, this game is the first in a long time where I'm actually constantly excited to keep playing. Like when I'm at work, I'll get excited to start playing again in the evening. And when I do start playing, it's hard to stop playing. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of good games, but this one is special to me.
@DesccryMirare It is, but the freedom during those turns between just shoving people into pits or smashing a nearby vase against their head is just so ridiculously fun.
I'm still in act 1 on a multi-player play through and my personal play through. Each has been VASTLY different in all aspects. I can see myself playing this a few dozen times.
This game deserves game of the year, it's been such a labor of love. I did get the early access, and it was fun to keep tabs on the development. I didn't ever complete act 1, because I didn't want too many spoilers, and I knew they'd make a great product. (Also getting a free upgrade to the digital deluxe was a nice surprise) On a side note, The Dark Urge feels like such the main character of this campaign, my first playthrough was a Good Dark Urge and there were so many 'Oh my god...' moments. I can't wait to re-play as the other origin characters as well.
The level 12 cap makes sense. It's the same reason why most 5e adventure paths end at 13-14. Because tier 4 play is drastically different. You're basically demi-gods at those upper levels flinging some powerful abilities and spells. It feels like an entirely different experience than lower level play. Which is basically what larian said as well.
Yeah but you're doing outrageously epic-level things. Killing devils, killing the avatars of Illithid Brains and demigods, killing entire armies and leaders of Sharran churches. These are not level 12 activities. It might be capped at 12 but the magic absolutely plays like 21+. My biggest complaint is how nothing is special anymore. Tieflings, Drow, Devils, Monsters, etc, are just everywhere. Hanging out in taverns and joining your party and everything. It's a very odd choice and makes it difficult to roleplay your class if you're constantly compelled to take them on as allies or ignore their existence on the city streets.
@@TommyCook-lf4xy you know, I'm not that familiar with DnD systems, but I know developers manage things much better when there's a limit to expectations and scope of the project. It's not impossible, but I believe the game _would_ be drastically different, simply because the powers ARE powerful. Much more than the previous level spells.
This game and Elden Ring are legendary. BG3 is probably the best game I’ve ever played. It’s so immersive. Hated turn base combat but I LOVE it in this game.

@@MorfsProwerI feel that. Bioware hurts more for me due to them being more influential early with NWN for me and how they did ME dirty in the end 😢. Blizzard as well due to the handling of Overwatch etc.
My favorite thing about bg3 is that after creating this amazing game, they added fucking split screen, so your friends don’t have to buy the game for you to play with them. It makes it so easy to talk others into trying it and getting it idk why more companies don’t do it
I have been following Larian for years, ever since D:OS 1. They are, in my opinion, the best RPG studio in the world right now. Their passion for gaming is admirable. Absolutely love them. If they keep this up, I'll be their lifelong fan and supporter.
Ever since DOS2 I loved them. Their games are what I thought Final Fantasy would be like as a kid, FFIX with it's beautiful open world fantasy and FF tactics with it's awesome turn based combat set my future expectations far too high.
They should really just allow every party member to have a "companion" where you can take one of the story party members around with you but they effectively disappear during combat if you're playing in coop or have a full party etc. I think it'd be cool and it would solve the quest issues.
Perhaps allow a party member to take over that companion like you would if people in multiplayer join your singleplayer game. Park your character like one of the mercenaries in camp and take over the companion for however long you want
To be fair i think every Origin should be considered 'in party' at all times unless they are dead/have left. You will just use four characters, but you are able to interact with other camp members freely out of combat, you can trade, talk or switch party members as you see fit in 'safe areas' in dangerous areas however they will just join in for some essential conversations. It wouldn't really change anything except reducing the amount of load screens... It's not like any player would just head to a party quest without associated origin anyway.
@@magnuscarlsson9969 It would be nice if they could just show up for the conversations/questlines they're required for. Karlach especially comes to mind because of the infernal iron stuff. The others not to sure about because they usually have some kind of fail state dialogue. I think the easiest thing would be for you to swap/trade characters in camp that aren't being played already. Would problaby make it a bit less tedious to swap around party members overall aswell
My top songs: 1 Raphael's Final Act (Was so hyped for this epic battle, epic moment, and the song fit perfectly, and the fact that the actor for Raphael sang the song himself, Chef's kiss!") 2 Harpy Song (I legitimately didnt want to kill the Harpies because I was literally mesmerized by the Harpy Song! I understand why, but it's a kinda shame it only plays in one part of the game) 3 Bard Dance! 4 The Power (Orchestral version)
Baldur's Gate 3 is the most fun I had in multiplayer with friends since Divinity, which happens to also have been made by Larian Studios. They're on a roll.
I celebrate this release. A true return to how gaming should be and always be.... But I'm just hoping this clout doesn't end up corrupting the minds of the studio and the devs and the publisher that brought us this true masterpiece. Because history has shown us time and time again that this is the true future of these studios.................. I hope it's different this time around.
To help anyone on the fence about playing dark urge. You dont have to make him a villain, he can be a hero. Its pretty much just opting in to even more story
While true, there is at least one unavoidable murder the game forces you to make. And if you're attached to that character, well...I'm saving Dark Urge for a second or third playthrough.
This game is actually insanely good! I found myself immersed for hours without noticing it’s surprised me and I wouldn’t be shocked if this game get nominated for awards.
If it doesn't win GOTY there will be actual demonstrations. The game reviewers have tried some hinky stuff over the years but there is no way they can give it to Starfield or Zelda.
Baldur’s Gate 3 feels like a game made by people who actually care about good gaming. (Could not tell you how much laughter I got from actually pulling off an Owlbear from the Top Rope.)
What's sad and funny is we have other trash developers who don't care about their games and only care about stealing your wallet getting jealous and trying to down play this game. Am glad theres still studios who still care and want to make top tier games with no micro transactions.
The best part is how the studio kept listening to criticisms, reports about bugs, and has continuously improved the game since it launched. They just dropped a bigass major patch #5 which added lots of stuff and fixes, so it's even better to play as time goes on.

Yes, BG3 will make money. But will it make as much profit as a game designed with maximum profit in mind like Diablo IV? There's no question in my mind that BG3 is the better game for the player, but for all the well deserved praise BG3 is getting, I expect there are lots of games out there that will make a much higher profit.
@@rodh1404 Turns out there are people out there with morals and dignity. Wringing every single dollar out of your consumers as possible reduces consumer confidence. For example, I will not be buying another Blizzard game after Diablo 4, because I could not play the game for 24 hours on my day off from work; because Blizzard forces everyone to be online at all times (in a singleplayer game) so they can milk their microtransactions. Making millions while still having a good relationship with your consumers > Slapping your consumers around to make as much money as possible.
@@rodh1404 Yes, until the consumer wises up to the corporate greed that is scamming them. BG3 may educate, who knows. Thank goodness that products like BG3 is there to educate. Maybe.
Just before the epic final showdown, I gathered with all the allies I had collected from this incredible adventure. I gave them a rousing speech to inspire them for one final fight! They all pledged their lives to help their champion defend Baldur's gate. Unfortunately, I accidently stole a silver tray, my allies really did not like that, turned hostile, killed me, so I was unable to save the city and everyone died. Seriously though, Amazing game :)
It's the little things that get me, like the fact you can engage an npc in dialogue then have a stealthy character sneak up behind them and attack/pickpocket them. It just lets you do so much that other games wouldn't or would bug out if you somehow managed to try. I love talking to animals too, but... beware the swamp frog.
Hit the frog with Sleep, as they have less than the 24HP threshold. Then hit them at advantage with a Melee build, and it's free. You're welcome. XD The frog is a fine cheese battle though, definitely one of the trolls at Larian made that fight. Reminds me of alot of fights in their Divinity games.
This is definitely one of my favorite games of all time. I hope other game developers and publishers take note so we can have more amazing games in the future instead of the trash most AAA companies have been making.
Played BG2 over 20 years ago and it blew me away when I was a kid coming from the great jrpgs of the snes era. Just leaving a comment to say you are the man, Joe. I've been watching you for probably more than a decade now, since I was a little kid. It makes me so happy to see you still making these reviews with exactly the same style, the same enthusiasm, the very same leather jacket and t-shirt. Keep doing what you do. To me, you're one of the greats.
After putting in a good amount of hours, I have to say this review is 100% on point. I totally suck at turned based games but after a while of trial and error I can enjoy it at a OJ level of “the casual” player lol. Been running a separate campaign with two other friends and it makes the game even better.
Never played dnd so some words and things didn’t make sense to me. Top down ish and turn based style of combat isn’t my thing anymore but I found myself enjoying it more and more as I went on. I think my favorite part really is how complex everything is especially dialogue and choices you make in the game. There’s a lot of freedom in what you can actually do in the world as depicted in a lot of footage and skits in this video. I found myself saving and reloading a lot so I can see all the different outcomes and do all sorts of crazy and creative things!
Ah but how about instead you always get 4 phrases to chose from, of the exact same 4 flavors but which lead to wildly different responses than indicated by the phrase?
You know Joe’s feelings right away if he’s smiling that wide at the start. Yup I love this game and the way it lets you just do whatever you want within reason
The exact moment i felt this game was magical was when i was in a particular companion quest turning point, it's either i convince them or their story heads in a disaster with a difficulty class of 20, no inspiration left, then i freaking roll a nat 20,and i didn't even have any bonuses, all i was guidance, i almost freaking screamed in the middle of the night. I will remember this game forever
This. Yes the dice can be frustrating (only because other games taught you to go for the best outcome always) but they ad sooooo much. The tension in dialogues is amazing.
The essence of real tabletop D&D, with a competent DM, is that there are consequences and they matter, fir good or bad. No saving, no loading, just learning and pushing on. BG3 will never replace "real" D&D, but it's earned my respect and love, as has Larian in general. This game has been but a glimpse of where game could be, and SHOULD be, if not for rampant corporate greed running most of it.
As a forever DM, I love that I have a way to play as a player in this. It has some stuff changed a bit, but its nothing too crazy. When covid hit, I had to end my groups campaign and then saw a trailer for EA of game. I bought it and had its bad moments at times with bugs, but I loved that they have a response message and update players with new patches and listen to the players.@@reyvynnightveil1706
They should add a encounter builder where you can setup an arena and add different enemies. Or a multiplayer death match mode where your party is matched against someone elses, it can be an arena or underground fightclub in the lower city or something.
Besides Act 3, which has minor bugs, this game is perfect. It's a reminder of what we should expect our games to be on release, complete and functional. Congratulations to everyone who worked on this game, it is exceptional.
honestly, even with the bugs, act 3 is still the best act for me. It's completely jampacked with content in a bustling city, and many quests to finish up your companion's story are sooo good. *well maybe karlach's story are not as good but it is what it us
It helps that Larian actually is really attentive to the criticisms and reports of problems and resolves them quicklg with updates. There were three huge game breaking bugs in Acts 2 and 3 on launch, and within two days, those bugs were patched and retro-fixed for people whose games were halted because of them
@@sircosmo21 Did you actually finish the game or did you just have that opinion because you read few reddit posts about this ? Really? I was actually looking for a review from someone who really played the original games and knows the forgotten realms. I played bg1&2 + enhanced edition more recently, Icewind Dale, Planescape and got tons of Forgotten realms books. Looking at people playing BG3 I'm very afraid to buy it. Turn base combat I can get over, but the stupid combat exploits stacking crates, flaming sword out of a candle and more... Every combat feels scripted, stupid romance system, can't play with a custom party. Is there even room to improve your character beyond beginner level? Ok, it's called Baldur's gate, but it really doesn't look like one. I'll wait for good mods and buy it on discount.

@Bluesruse the good thing is they are constantly updating the game. Patch 1 just dropped and judging from their previous games, they will continue to update the game until its literally perfect. Even in DOS2 they ended up adding some popular mods as official features to the game for free (praying for a sprint function 😂)
I've never played a game like balder's gate, literally and metaphorically. I've never touched rpgs until this game, the closest thing I have is CK3 coming from a first person/open world background mainly. I have played many a game whether its just to try for fun or something i really sink my teeth into, but this game makes all minus a select few pale in comparison. I have never played a game so rich and detailed and with such a tremendous amount of depth. I thought the passion for great games died awhile ago and everything, even most "passion projects" sell out and become cash cows with in-game purchases. Its good to finally see a real passion project done right, and justly so.
With friends it’s amazing and playing solo it’s equally amazing cause you’re basically playing 4 story modes at once!! Every companion has their own motives and stories that you can jump into and control…so amazing. No wonder every game developer was doing damage control upon release.
I was 70-80% of the game and i restarted as the dark urge. I made poor choices in my first run and by the time I realized it, it was too late lol gotta love the true consequences of your choices, gave me a reason to start again and I’m loving my second play through 😎

The customization thing was added in patch 3, so… yeah, Larian, in addition to being superstar devs, actually listen to the audience with their patches and hotfixes
Way back in the day (a few years ago), I bought what I thought was access to the beta of Baldur's Gate 3 back when the open beta first came out, when the game was just the watered down prologue. Come 2023 I had mostly forgotten the game existed, then heard about how the game was amazing. Went to check the price, make sure it was 'full price' to start saving up, and found a download link instead; where I have seen many studios turn their betas into seperate products, Larian gave me the entire game years later for no additional charge. Honestly surprised me (a sad state of affairs, true, but a nice surprise still), best $20 I have spent in a long time.
They have a $10 option to buy the deluxe version of the game. And honestly I bought it just so I could give them another $10. This game was absolutely amazing and I’m not even finished with it yet.
