Luckily you have a party of 4 sampled from even more companions so there is lots of opportunity to try out builds. Also a great reason to do another play through or two!
In regards to multiclassing: There are few classes that won't strongly benefit from one or two levels of fighter. Action surge is insanely strong on almost any class.
Haven't tried this in BG3 yet, but I had a tabletop Eldritch Knight and I found a nice little combo you could get into. First turn of combat, attack three times with your action. Now that enemy will have disadvantage on your next save. Action surge, and cast Toll the Dead. They have already taken damage, so they will roll the save at disadvantage and take 3d12 necro. Then, since you used your action to cast a cantrip, you can use your bonus action to make another melee weapon attack. Now they will have disadvantage on the next save from you again, so next turn you can keep the chain going.
I've played through most of the game as battlemaster and experiemented with respecing level 12 paladins with end gme gear and feel like battlemaster is the best martial class in the game right now for a non cheesy tactician playthrough.
battlemaster is incredibly solid. Because it's so consistently high damage every turn, it will always perform well, and it will perform especially well on a fight you didn't prepare properly for. It's by no means broken but it has always been the most consistent martial class in dnd 5e due to its simplicity, so no wonder it also performs well here in bg3 where very little was changed for it :)
I went ahead and looked for myself how many equipment slots you can fill with this effect + Champion's Lv.3: Head: Covert Cowel, Dark Justiciar Helm, Saverok's Horned Helm Cloak: Shade-Slayer Cloak Weapons: Dual wield two weapons with the improved critical or similar trait. There's multiple. Ranged: The Dead Shot Potion: Elixir of Viciousness There is no armor, gloves, boots, or accessories with this effect. This should all add to total crit number of 13 or higher, assuming all of these effects stack perfectly.
One of my campaigns I have queued up is Eitzah Kreet the half orc champion that goes mega crits. Thinking the plan is champion to 5, start taking berserker levels and at 8, respec down to 3 champion and rest of the way go wildheart barbarian
Listen. This one is easy. It's already been said. 6 monk, 4 rogue, 2 fighter. You literally clap everything and with the right gear, you're one turning bosses on tactician.
It's hard to say no to just a 2 level dip in Fighter for me. Getting that con saving throw, proficiency with all weapons and armor, action surge, and second wind - and then going the rest in whatever you want . . . it's just soooo good. But Battlemaster and Eldritch Knight are so fun to play too.
I always found that the Eldritch knight lvl 7 feature was weird I think when you choose to attack you can cast a cantrip as a bonus action rather than the other way around
not really, since this way it would gimp the third attack at lvl 11 - if you attack and cast a cantrip, no more attacks for you, but if you cast and then attack, two more additional attacks are still available
This is one of the reasons why I REALLY wish Green-Flame Blade and Booming Blade were cantrips in this game. Those cantrips are also weapon attacks, so you aren't sacrificing as much to use that feature. I hope they add it at some point, eldritch nights will be wild if they do.
@@ortxxxmExtra attacks aren't bonus actions though. Casting a cantrip currently counts as your main action and nullifies your 2x extra attacks at lvl 11. 1 main cantrip and 1 bonus attack VS. 3 main attacks. I agree with OP.
It is weird, but you can play around it. Like EK 7 / Bard 5, throw vicious mockery around and slap people with long stick in-between. Or take warlock instead of Bard, you can never go wrong with eldritch blast.
Since cantrip damage scales with character level you get cantrips that deal damage equivalent to two or three melee attacks so it does balance out. With poison spray at level 11 you’d be doing 3D12 cantrip plus one attack (which would impose disadvantage on the next saving throw) vs three attacks.
Thanks Cas! You provide the best guides. This drama means nothing to me. I've been following you for a few years. Your DoS 2 guides and even your Elden Ring Guides helped me tremendously. They helped so much I can even make my own builds now.
6 eldritch knight/ 6 necromancer... 3 feats, weapon returns after throw, army of undead, access to all the best gear and couple good spells, reasonable self-healing capabilities. Its not one-shot burst damage build, but you feel unstoppable.
Honestly i thought fighters were the avg soldier class from Mass effect but man baulders gate 3 made me love fighters. Lae'zel with battlemaster she was my CQC DPS queen. She soloed so many high hp enemys in my game and i knew my next game i have to fo fighter.
Thanks for the good content as always. Tho I would really like you finish up all the class overview videos like this one, before giving some early game guides. Maybe it’s just me, but I really struggle with deciding what class to put in my party. Your class overview series has been really helpful, still there are more classes to cover.
It’s more time efficient to play one class up to a point and create both at the same time than to ping pong and have to remember things later. I will get them all done though!
@@Fextralife Thanks for the reply. Again this is merely my personal opinion. I find your overview give enough info on each class for me to pick the subclass, and allow me to try it out myself without spoiling too much. Since I am playing further into the game, I begin to have more interest in try something new, like trying druid because cool dude Halsin joins (I know about the respec). This is how I get to my point. I completely understand your reasoning. Many people definitely need some helping hands to start up and not get overwhelmed by all the things this game throws at them. I really appreciate your hard work.
Eldritch Knight's Weapon Bond carries the class with damage. My Eldritch Knight does about 400-500 damage a turn when hasted with throwing weapons, thanks to the broken damage stacking of Tavern Brawler and items that increase thrown weapon attacks.
Mods. After my first play through, I seen class mods that they add in classes that were left out and with that comes abilities including green flame blade.

there is mod called "5e spells" or "blade cantrips". I am using 5e spells rn, and its blast, booming blade is just too good to pass up
@@alejandrolievano5573 Couple big streamers are making content off the fact these guys embed their twitch channel into their website. The streamers claim this means all their viewers are just bots from the site and not 'real' viewers but my personal experience seeing Fextralife's streams says otherwise. From what I can tell it's just sour grapes from people that make their living solely on twitch and don't like the idea of this group diversifying their business.
It's become so common for me to multiclass 2 levels of fighter into just about everthing I play now, just because Action Surge is so juicy and losing 2 levels of another class isn't really the end of the world for most classes (the biggest downside I've really noticed is not having access to level 6 spells, but by the time I get that far in the game, there's multiple items that provide spell bonuses, including at least 2 items that give free spell slots, so I don't really notice much of a deficiency by that point 💜
This was helpful, thank you. I like fighter but for role playing I don't like the idea of being a huge muscle bound oaf and I don't like two handed or heavy armor. But I still wanted to be a sword and board fighter. So when I rolled my character I gave her less strength and a bit more dex, and some charisma for role-playing and dialog. I realized this was less than ideal but went with it. It didn't occur to me I could have just gone high dex. Thanks to this video I realized that would have been the ideal thing to do. I was just debating whether it would be worth restarting, I'm level 4, then I remembered Withers. So I'm going to respec as soon as I'm done with work tomorrow. Don't really like doing that. Seems a bit like cheating and I should just deal with the consequences of my decision. But I'm worried about how much this will hamper me for the rest of the game. So I'll do it... just this once. Anyhoo thanks again.
Hear me out: - 6 BattleMaster Fighter - 5 Fiend Warlock - 1 War Domain Cleric Possible 4 normal attacks per turn as long as you have cleric charges, later you can do even more attacks with action surge. In total you could theoretically do 18 attacks in 4 turns (3 turns using the cleric charges to make attack as a bonus action, making it 12, and then, on the 4th turn you can make 3 normal attacks and then action surge for more 3, gives you the 18 attacks in those 4 turns), imagine the damage. Depending on the fight and your set up, this will delete most enemies, one each turn at most, with only one character.
i love playing high str characters, i am getting tired of "Set Str to 8, and pump into Dex, Use Finesse melee weapons", most ppl loved Dex, it improves AC, improves ranged dmg, improves initiative etc..etc, improves Sleight of Hands, lockpicking, pickpocketing..etc but Str improves, jump distance, carrying weight, shoving, dmg of most melee weapons. Most builds for sorcerer, wizards, druids, rogues, rangers, bard, warlock, cleric, monk, all recommend Str 8, Dex 17 or 15 at character building
bc ac improvement is that much better. and u dont need to shovel when every bonus action does like 30+dmg, conservatively. besides the last platform stupid melees got mind broken. unless tarven brawler of some soft, dont go str.
Had a random idea of allowing fighter class, to help in dialog while high charisma character does speech check. Basically good cop bad cop. They stand behind the charisma guy supporting him as bad cop. Silly but it would be kind of cool.
A quarterstaff, a shield, and polearm master is a very underestimated combination on classes liek fighters that can make multiple attacks. Works well on Paladins too.
Thinking about going with Fighter for my first level and then Warlock from then on. Getting heavy armor proficiency and a plus one to AC with defense fighting style will be beneficial to a hexblade build.
It's a really good build with smooth "power steps" Specifically b/c Eldritch Blast levels w/ Character level, not class level. Your EB gets 2 beams at the same time you get a feat - you'll feel that powerspike a lot. lvl 6 (1/5) you can attack twice and get LVL 3 spells which feels awesome. From there you can continue w/ Warlock, but I might go back to Fighter 2 or a dozen other directions. But if you don't care about the feats, 1 Fighter/ Warlock x/ Fighter x is a great build.
Hey man, just want you to know even though there’re some drama going on , your guides and wiki have been great for a family dad and casual like me. Keep up the good work and ignore the haters !
I like to play a witcher type character as a fighter, making good use of alchemy and potion brewing to make blade coatings and tinctures that enhance your abilities in lieu of magic
Lol I'm still on my second playthrough (1st time to beat the game) and all the class builds makes me really think which one I wanna do for my next one. At first it was wizard, but now it's really between wizard and fighter
If anyone wants to make a Peter Jackson wood elf Legolas Jedi build, which is what I’m doing for my first play through, you should use an archery Champion or Battle Master Fighter Class as a Noble because he’s a prince of Mirkwood and a sharpshooter. You’ll do massive amounts of damage with your longbow due to critical strikes and good damage with martial weapons, mainly long sword(Orcrist) or duel short swords in a pinch. No magic or ranger shit 😂
I'm at lv 11 right now and Karlach is a lv 8 barb berserker/ lv 3 fighter champion. I was thinking about getting fighter to lv 4 because of the extra feat (savage attacks) since she already has 20 str thanks to the mighty cloth armor and I already have the great weapon master feat but I might go lv 9 barb for the brutal critical feat since it's very easy to crit in this game due to ilithid powers and some items (Killers sweetheart ring comes to mind)
Hello, great video, can I make a duel wielding (swords) Rogue that can cast magic & use a bow? Just a few offensive spells from a distance, I don't want to only be able to attack up close. Thanks
Fighters are the easiest class to play. So much fun :D. You should have mentioned Githyanki as excellent Fighters since they get Misty Step and also, the game has loads of Gith Specific loot that are ideal for Fighters
EK 11 is a 3rd level spellcaster Wizard 1 adds just 1 spellcaster level You need a level 5 spellcaster to unlock lvl 3 slots So you need lvl10 EK and lvl2 Wizard in order to do that
Why not go 7 EK 5 wiz, 7 wiz 5 EK or 6 and 6? I was going to do my next playthrough as one of these 3 options but I was curious as to why that might or might not be a good idea
Why bother with 14 Dex when you are going to wear heavy armour? You gain 0 AC from Dex while wearing heavy armour, just a bit of initiative and saving throws against mostly AoE damage spells. You could increase Wis instead to gain Crowd Control saving throws which, imo, is a lot more beneficial.
Because there are spells and other abilities to shut down crowd control or negate their effects. A bit of Wisdom does less for a Fighter than a bit of Dex. If you're worried about wisdom saves then that's when you grab Resilient for proficiency in Wisdom saves so that you have a scaling buff.
You never dump dex, you will take way more damage and get crowd-controlled way harder if you go last. You being able to jump longer wouldn't mean much if you can't move.
I don't mean to dump dex, I just don't feel like investing 3 points into Dex to go from 12 to 14 is worth it compared to investing 2 points into Wisdom and have 1 point remaining to probably go to 13 dex and reach 14 using feats. In fact, the default for a Fighter is 17/13/15/10/12/8 and imo it's fine. I might go to 16/13/16/10/12/8 instead for more hp and const saving throw early game. Except for Eldritch Knight tho.
You mention a couple Races that pair well with fighter but in the B roll of the charatcter it looks like I see Githyanki and High Half elf more often?? As a noob I have analysis paralysis
Githyanki I assume would be because of certain Githyanki specific gear you can get, especially an early legendary if you don't mind reloading a save a couple of times to get the weapon in act 1.
I made my Dark Urge Eldrich Knight with INT8 because of thr brain damage. It was still absolutely awesome with all the utility and ritual spells. Never even learned attack spells aside from magic missile, because it doesn't require attack rolls so no drawbacks from low INT. Jump, longstrider, shield, friends cantrip and others were a lot of help during the campaign. Also bumped my STR to permanent 24 with drow's potion and buff from a mirror. Paired with feats and balduran's sword delivered up to 50 dmg per hit in act3.
Very few characters are worse off with 1-2 Fighter levels. Casters get heavy armor, Action Surge, and Second Wind, for example. The big question is when to sneak those levels in. I try to have any multiclassing done by the end of Act 1.
@@Comicsluvr see I’m in act 3 and I’m just getting into multi classing now that I have all my level simple because while the game isn’t that hard especially compared to DOS2 the later encounters really start making you want those extra actions
Cas do you have your own RU-vid channel? Not sure what is happening right now, but if things go sideways I'd like to continue watching your stuff. You are the best part of Fextralife!
Fextralife is Fex and Cas. I’m not going anywhere. Nothing will happen, these drama haters are posting bullshit and it will do nothing because it’s not true and their fans don’t even game so they’ll just move on to other targets when their hive mind instructs it.
@@Fextralife "Don't even game"..? Why would they care if they didn't play video games..? Or watch these people in the first place? What is that even supposed to mean? That doing something shady and pretending that it isn't should only matter to gamers..? How is it bull to point out the fact that within one post, you (or whomever wrote the post), contradicted themselves on 3 separate occasions regarding said shadiness. Or that people will be *instantly* banned from your Twitch for even asking about what's going on. Sometimes for lesser reasons than that. Might I also suggest teaching that kid that you have streaming for you about how to property handle difficult situations, as a representative of your brand and company, in front of "tens of thousands of people" that doesn't end up throwing out stupid names, flipping off the camera, and then instantly ending the stream. I don't really give a sh*t. I've used your guides for years. I like the content and I think the wiki is mostly fine (if a little too opportunistic, forsaking quality at times and also being incredibly cut-throat, straight up killing smaller wikis. It's just business, I get it). But your response to this has been pretty bad... And the only people who think it hasn't been are the very quality of people you're talking smack about, mindless drones following a hivemind.
Can you please explain how difficulty class (DC) is calculated for battlemaster manouver effects (i.e. drop weapon)? Does the DC scale on intellect like for eldritch knigth spell effects?
@@Fextralife Thank you! So a flat 10 replaces the (8 + Proficiency Bonus) used for spells, good to know! Is there any way to increase DC of manouver effects from equipment similarly to how it is for spell DC? Edge case: Is the DC formula the same if I have a spell caster who take a manouver via Feat?
I'm a bit confused with eldritch knight as it says 0 for my spell save DC and my spell attack and it says "none" for my spell casting ability... although when I hover over spell save DC is has 8 Base DC + 3 Proficiency + 1 from High Spellcasting After the description of it so I don't know if it is glitched or what is actually happening for this rn 😅 if anyone has any inkling please share your thoughts ig
I feel like I really suck at this game and is definitely my first turn based game (besides FF7R) but even being terrible at it I’m really enjoying it , I’m about 30bhours in ( would be more but AC6 came out 😂)
