Baldur’s Gate 3 has a heartwarming tribute to a special fan.
In Act 3, deep in the Lower City, there is a character named Golbraith. The monocled former mindflayer hunter can be found retired in his own cellar.
Golbraith is based on a real person - one who never got to play the full game.
A Larian Studios forum user by the name of Solfalia shared a powerful story prior to the game’s official launch. As someone who grew up playing Baldur’s Gate 2 and other Larian games with their dad, Solfalia was excited to go on another co-op adventure in BG3.
Unfortunately, Solfalia’s father was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in the early days of lockdown, and the progression of the disease meant that it was unlikely he would be able to enjoy the full game upon its release. Thankfully, BG3 was released into early access shortly after, and Solfalia posted to the Larian forums to thank the team for giving them one more adventure with their dad.
That message touched the hearts of the BG3 team, including an unidentified member Solfalia calls “Superwriter”. Thanks to Superwriter, Solfalia’s father was included in Baldur’s Gate 3 not as an easily-missed sign or vague reference, but as Golbraith - a fully-realized character with a history, multiple lines, and a really cool monocle.
Solfalia’s dad was in a care facility by the time Golbraith made his debut, but he was delighted to hear about the great adventurer that he inspired.
So, when you’re in the Lower City, make sure to stop by Golbraith’s Cellar - where you can hear amazing stories and pay tribute to a fellow Baldur’s Gate fan.
