We had a NH BR740 round baler for 10 years, and we were not satisfied with it, trade it this year for a Vermeer 504N and so far it has been great. BTW we live in south GA
Not familiar with the Vermeer stuff, I hear a lot about them in other countries but I can't say I've seen or heard anything on them up here in Atlantic Canada. New Holland/Case, John Deere, and Hesston/Massey are most of what you see, and now some Kubota balers since they are pushing their products hard. But, like I said, my round baler knowledge is pretty limited. We don't even do much of it, maybe a couple hundred bales at most in a year. Feeding out of a silo is a lot easier then feeding round bales lol
Hey Mac see if you can get a old piece of belt from someone to put on your drawbar so hay doesn't hang up on you pin and ball up. it works really well.
Noticed that you do not shut off the pto when dumping a roll. We looked at a new 1745 this year and the dealer recommended that we cut off the pto when dumping. That decided for us that we did not want the 1745. Are you satisfiedwit the 1745?
We've been running it for a few years now, no problems other than this recent control box issue, which is minor. It's all a guy could want for doing hay, but I think if we were buying again we'd probably get something more suited for doing round bale silage. We really don't have a ton of experience doing round bales, up until when we got this baler we just did small squares as our barn wasn't set up for round bales. Once we moved the cows into the new freestall barn 3-4 years ago we switched to round bales as well. Anyway, it doesn't seem to have any issues leaving the PTO engaged while dumping bales.
I baled for years a round baler never turn off the pto to dump a bale of hay. Someone told me I should turn off the pto when dumping a bale . So I tried it. Big mistake. The pto cable broke because of over use engaging and disengaging continuously. Every time you have a bale ready every two minutes could be 100 to 200 time in a day. I only tried it about 3 times before the pto cable broke and stopped the whole baling process. Never again . I leave the pto running as I dump a bale out now .
Slow to start a bale I had a vermeer 604l had do the same. Used mf 282 to roll everybody tractor dealers call it the mexican tractor 1984 from el Paso texas still runs good 1484 hrs history that was when tractors were made where labor was cheap
nice video and how many acres was that field and could you make a living off of just hay farming and 50 or 100 acres farm of hay and have a nice day bud
Hey David, that was just a small piece I think around 3.5 acres or so. I think you'd have a tough time earning a living farming hay on 100 acres, but I guess it depends on what you call a living, plus really you'd have all winter to work off farm and earn money too. We got about 35-40 bales off that piece, say 10 bales per acre, thats 4x5 bales, decent quality 4x5's go for around $25-50 CND per bale depending on quality, time of year, if there is a shortage or surplus on the market etc. So if you did 100 acres thats 1000 bales @ say $35/bale would be $35,000 income. Less fuel, maintenance on the equipment, twine or net, land rental if you have any rented, fertilizer costs, etc. Hope that helps some? Bagwell Farms has a good channel too, he does just hay down in the US somewhere he might be a good guy to chat with about this stuff. We don't really sell hay, just make it for our cows, we do buy a little bit though.
