Video discussing what kind of baling twine we use for our square bales of hay. We are a small family farm in the mountains of Virginia. Subscribe for more farming videos. Thanks for watching!
Here in Ireland, Sisal has got a lot more expensive. The only people who still use it are people with old balers. If your 1966 New Holland 268 ( or whatever) runs well with sisal but not with poly, then that's what you use! When you only make 500 bales a year the price isn't too important.. Poly twine here seems to be mainly produced in Italy by a company called Tama. 12000 feet ( two balls) costing about 30 euro. ( probably about 38 US dollars). Bale kickers are unknown here, so nobody worries about knot strength.
Thankyou for the information I'm not sure if I had all ready asked you about twine but you have given me a good insight. It was something I was thinking while watching you last video though. I never thought about it but if you have to thread the needles a few times it sure can eat time. Thankyou very much...
You talk about adjusting the knitters. Sure would like to see a video on that. My right side keeps mistying. My haybaler person says mys string is to small I am switching to 9600 170. I am only a pretend farmer. I think what happened was I switched twine sizes without realizing it. Thank You for this video.
I agree on consistency issues, you gotta really like sisal to not go to poly. My feeling is sisal and small squares is so low volume no purchasers take it serious anymore and don’t leverage quality, - I’ve had good luck with Golden Harvest - horrible with others. Also, as baler wears in sharp edges on knife arm, dull knives, needle eyes and twine guides will fray twine.
Ghosting - never heard the term but I do the same thing trying to throw the net wrap and plastic people under the bus, just did it yesterday - I’m still a 7200 sissal hold out on small squares and 16000 sissal on rounds. Plastic is horrible on environment and equipment.
No thanks on the plastic. After fighting that stuff out of the bearings on the spreader, I'd rather not look at it. Unfortunately, the big horse farm I spread for feeds out big squares. However, they have no issue paying for a bearing if it goes out. Have done it once already. Now I pull the beater when the pile's done to clean it out as the plastic twine works its way past the shield. Already have had to pull the individual plastic strands out of the bearing itself. Figured that's what happened to the one that went out. The plastic strands got in there, melted & there went my bearing.
I will stay with sisal twine......Stay away from the big box stores cheap junk stuff. Bought a brand called "Maple Leaf" last year and had real good luck with it. It was only $2.00 more a bundle... 9000# for the squares and 16000# for my rounds....
Where are you purchasing this twine. I'd like to order some but can't find it anywhere. You said you ordered it on the internet but what website did you use?
