Ball Python Genetics 1: Diploid, Haploid, Homozygous, and Heterozygous 

I'm taking online courses to become a Veterinary Technician and I failed my first attempt at the genetics exam. Someone pointed me here and I watched your series to help me study. Today, I passed the retake! I have a hard time learning by just reading, the way you teach with enthusiasm, examples, and comparisons is EXACTLY how I learn, so thanks a ton for helping me pass my exam!

When a zygote is heterozygous for a gene, it means that two of it's genes are different from each other, this happens because the two parents gave out different alleles through meiosis.

Currently studying Pre-Veterinary right now; this was a nice refresher, thank you!

I have 3 nieces ages 6, 4 & 2. They love all animals & I’m making sure reptiles remain a part of that. I’m teaching them how to safely handle & appreciate reptiles. It’s magical to watch them learn about the world around them!

I already knew what every term meant before I watched the video. I haven't studied these terms since the fall semester of 2016. Science is one of my strongest subjects so I retain more of the knowledge for longer periods of time than I do from other subjects. I even remembered what DNA stood for: deoxyribonucleic acid.

I was reminded this morning of someone who had stolen gaboon vipers and decided I needed to watch some videos of the beautiful creatures and landed on your page. That was way too many hours ago and I'm still watching.

This video is very wholesome and takes me back to the wonderful days when life was easy, genetics was fun and I wasn't aware of polyploidy and next generation sequencing methods. I hope this series receives more attention because it has the potential to be a great learning tool for any kiddies looking to get into biology. Keep up the great work!!!

Saying that a zygote is heterozygous for a gene means that it only has one copy of that gene on the allele. It got that way by one of the parents passing down that gene and the other parent passing down a different gene. If it were homozygous, it would have two copies of the same gene, and both parents would have passed down that gene. One gene was passed from each parent because the cells that carry genes and combine to form a zygote, sperm and egg, are haploid, which means it carries half of the required DNA to make a diploid zygote! Finally, meiosis, which is where a chromosome splits in two, is how the reproductive cells got the genes to be passed on. You're absolutely right, typing it out/thinking up a full answer does help me understand! I definitely get it now, thank you! I can't wait to watch the rest.

This is such a great idea! I breed leopard geckos and find their genetics incredibly fun and simple. It makes me happy for more people to learn about genetics, and to maybe learn something I didn't know myself as you make these. ^^ I may be biased but leopard geckos (and ball Pythons of course) would be great to show as examples since they have simple dominant/recessive traits, codominant traits, line-bred traits. I can't think of one with incomplete dominance right now though.

A zygote is heterozygous when it contains two different alleles for the same gene. For example: my husband has blue eyes and I have brown. Our children would be heterozygous for brown and blue eyes, because we gave them an allele for two different color genes. If we both had the same color of eyes our children would be homozygous for whichever color. I have a pretty solid understanding of genetics and how they work from practical application over the years, but I am absolutely loving this series already! I feel it's giving me a better grasp of the terminology, since that's where I tend to struggle.

A zygote is heterozygous meaning carrying both the recessive and dominant allele, it got this way from having parents that were heterozygous or one parent have herozygous alle frequencies or homozygous dominant allele frequencies and the other be either heterozygous or homozygous recessive. To think it all started with some pea plants :)

From both parents you get an allele say for your height gene so you sort of mix them both and that creates a small part of you. I hope I get this right. And oh do I love this channel. Congrats on 4.5k you were like 3k last week. (and that's a good thing).
