I shop the dollar store for all of my snakes’ decor. The best part is, the fake foliage and flowers change seasonally, so my snakes habitats are decorated according to the seasons too. For example, my corn’s tank was fall festival themed with autumn leaves and pumpkin (candle holder) hides, tiny crates, hay bales, and even a scarecrow. I think being able to inexpensively change up their homes and therefore give them more stimulation is something everyone should try if they can.

Personally don't keep anything other than geckos. However one of the adult children got a ball python and asked me to do the build around 6 months ago. All my geckos are in bioactive enclosures so I wanted to do the same for the snake (thanks for the videos on that they really helped). The hardest part was the plants. As you stated in the video a snake of size will devastate plants. Took some research to find plants that would be reptile safe and hold up to a large snake. Turned out well (after a few adjustments) and the snake is much happier.

overhead heating is actually better for ball pythons because they are heavy bodied snakes, so having a heat mat underneath them is more likely to burn them. also provide uvb for your reptiles if you can :)

@jr-nw4ed

you shouldn’t have any sort of heating element without a thermostat anyway, which diminishes the threat of burning by a ton.
@TheCharleseye
@TheCharleseye Год назад
You can't burn a Ball Python with a 90°F heat mat. If a thermostat fails, a snake can move off the heat mat. Heat lamps, on the other hand, tend to turn an enclosure into an Easy Bake Oven if the thermostat fails.
@jr-nw4ed
@jr-nw4ed Год назад

little tipto add for enclosures: Plastic sterlight bins work AMAZING, for smaller individuals walmart sells appropriate sizes, and for bigger bins, home improvement stores will usually have those. of course PVC is always better, but if you need something in a pinch or just something to grow in, def recommend.

I’ve done that for my young banana BP. She’s doing real well after he first week in there. Make sure that you DO NOT get a plastic tub with some fancy divots/ridge designs on the bottom. It’s messed up my heat mats adhesive and tape. I had to use 10lb weight plates to elevate it- making the heat mat press against the bottom. The adhesive wore off at one point and the temp dropped to 79 degrees when it’s supposed to be 80-90 degrees. So, use tape, get a good bin and definitely use a thermostat‼️‼️

I had a random idea last winter and tried it out on my pythons and they loved it. I got small-ish storage bins from the dollar store, cut a hole in the corner of the lid, filled it half way with water, and put a heat mat underneath. They would go in and out, soaking as they pleased. The water was averaged about 82°f. They had little hot tubs to enjoy.

Keep in mind that radiant heat panels aren’t a good primary heat source, although they can be used for nighttime/supplementary heat (like CHEs and DHPs). A halogen flood bulb is the most natural and beneficial primary daytime heat source.

I don't have a snake, but it's very similar to how I did my fire skink's enclosure. I made her hide out of a plastic bin that I burned an opening into the side. I use only fake plants in my enclosures. I can't keep house plants alive to save my life. And since she likes to redecorate with her burrowing, it'd be even harder. Makes it so much easier when I'm cleaning. Just take them out, throw them in a bin with cleaning solution, let soak, rinse and put back in. I don't see the point in buying expensive plants and hides when I can get them for cheap and then customize to my liking. You can't even see the grey plastic bin that is her hide bc I buried in the substrate and put plants all around it. I'd rather my budget go to things you can't skimp on.

Yes! This!!!!! Studies are now showing that the sooner just about any snake is exposed to stimuli, the more their brain develops and the less defensive they are bc they learn to deal with minor stresses better. Dressing out a tank and changing it up occasionally is a GREAT thing. Flea markets and garage sales are also good decor sources. I had a rosy boa that loved a ceramic open work lamp base for climbing in and lounging on. Think outside the box. Anything can be made to look more natural with a coat of silicone that has dry sphagnum moss pressed into it, or coated in pond spray foam, painted and them moss and dry coconut coir applied with silicone. Hemp rope and bits of black iron pipe and fittings can be turned into an outrageously cool "industrial chic" jungle gym. The same can be done with pvc pipe and fittings wrapped in jute twine.

I bought one of those ferret/rat hammocks for my ball python and he uses it almost every night! We were having trouble finding branches he wouldn't knock over, and it was pretty cheap

I'm currently building an enclosure and I was worried about enough lighting. Now I know they don't need much. Something simple is all I need. Cool. The bedding idea also helped. I used to spend mad money on snake bedding from the pet store. Would be nice to get some weight for half the price

For heating, a halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer or dimming thermostat is the most natural and beneficial option during the day. Linear UVB is also very beneficial. The care guide on the website reptifiles has more information.

I got a 20 gallon long for my juvenile bp at a thrift store, And it was one of the best decisions I made for her. It was pretty much in great condition except for a heat lamp melted a little bit of the rim to close it, but that doesn't hurt anything and maybe a couple of scratches on the glass, but otherwise it's we just cleaned it really well and put everything in there and it was for only about $20 if I can remember correctly.

I’ve found that my ball python Kaya loves burrowing through her cocohusk so I like to give her a little extra. Sometimes I’ll open her enclosure to change her water out and she just pops up with coco fibre on her head wanting to come out and explore more

You mentioned radiant heat and also mentioned the heating mat. Do you need both of them. This subject troubles me the most worrying about doing a setup for the first time. I don’t have a snake yet but I am really close. I just need to keep researching, i want to do it right and do the enclosure and the snake.
