Ballasting and spilled coal on our large scale indoor-outdoor Garden Railroad

We've been working on the railroad. This week adding ballast inside and outside. The "ballast" inside is on the coal loading ramp on the Chama coaling tower in 1:20.3 scale.
Outside we are testing an idea Karyn came up with, using clay cat litter on the loose. We are testing a section to see how it holds up but so far, looks GREAT and easy to remove or add to. Next spring we will see how it did under all that Utah snow.
NOW, inside we are mostly working on the huge model of the Chama coaling tower. In 1:20.3 the structure comes in at one meter tall! We showed the process of making the rusty tin roofing panels a few weeks ago.
• How to make Rusty Meta...
Karyn constructed the concrete retaining walls and coal bin and I built the steel coal grates for the non-functioning loading ramp. And we are now ready to ballast the short track. Not really ballast, the track is covered with spilled coal, as is the area around the base of the building. I have constructed a wood base, and now we are detailing and scenicing with real coal Karyn "lifted" from the coal pile at the Durango shops on the Durango and Silverton narrow gauge railroad.
Here again, we are testing a product called "yellow Dextrin", a type of cornstarch used in making glues. In the past, I have used it to ballast my old "N" scale model railroad. But the product I had been using was pulled off the market in about 1980. So I have been using the "old" system of misting water (with a tiny amount of dish soap added) to the ballasted track and then adding 4:1 dilute white glue from a dropper. This works great, however, a few weeks ago when we were making the dirt road grade crossing it proved to not be a great system for gluing fine powders like dirt and cinders.
• How to Build a Highly ...
And so I have been looking for that old product, which turned out to be yellow Dextrin. So we tested that with cinders from the Evanston Wyoming roundhouse, "squirrel dirt" fine dirt dug up by ground squirrels, Woodland Scenics ballast, and our chunks of coal. While not great on the chunks it worked GREAT with dirt and cinders. Except it dries glossy and will look better after a dull coat. Overall a great product to add to our "bag of tricks".

Looks great. For getting the “corn starch” to stick to larger particles maybe you could try the old shake n bake approach-combine the ingredients in a bag and shake. For a dull coat replacement try heading to the art store instead of the hobby shop. You may find a number of alternatives from spray varnish to fixatives. The products are geared to being applied to more delicate materials and sensitivity to surface disruptions and visual quality are paramount.

Yes, I used some Liquitex mat spray for fixing trees (no Testor on this side of the pond), and it worked fine. The only issue was the spay cap being obstructed after a few months, but I have the issue with other rattle cans, even after releasing gas head down to clear the cap.

I did that on my old railroad. Worked well! But in this case as its up on benchwork Ive added a lip to hold ballest from falling off, mostly, and my plan is keep it loose and just fix and adjust as needed. Soooo simple to jusr brush around. Time will tell. So far so good.

When I was in my teens I built construction dioramas. I experimented with rail road modeling stuff but couldn't get the tire tracks right, or ruts. I tried glue on dirt and sawdust, even dirt. But the stuff I ended up using was clay ground fine. It would harden up quite well, and if it was wrong, pry it up, regrind it and start over which I did a number of times. Sadly, raccoons got hold of and destroyed while it resided in the attic. I built a model truck chassis to just roll through it with a brick on the frame. I used a fixatif spray like used on drawings in the old days to keep things stuff down. Then I planted an appropriately muddied International Transtar truck with rust and bare metal and just generally worked to death as the theme of the project. I think the judges were torn between the mud and the truck. I enjoyed telling them it was real mud. I still have the truck. Baffled what to do with it tho.

Even though it's non-clumping, I still think the clay will absorb and hold moisture too long. Plus it expands a lot when wetted.. Even if it doesn't turn into mush, it could keep your layout wet underneath and cause damage. Keep an eye on it regularly. Fingers crossed.

Hi Toyman, Rob Spangler uses a product by Treehouse Studios that he says dries dead flat. It is available at Hobby Lobby in their spray paint section. I tried using clumping cat litter for ore loads with ok results. It looked good dry but wet it shrunk and pulled away from the edges of the car. I have some charcoal I use in my hoppers for coal loads I got it from the floral section at a grocery store I worked at years ago. Nice work on the railroad. Thanks for sharing!

Some good effects there... that dextrin is good for a wet mud look.I am also looking for a brush on clear flat coat. For spray I use Rustoleum Chalked. My last walk in the pine forest I picked up some pine cones, bark, needles, and rotting wood which has a bright yellow ochre colour.Free material that can be ground up or mixed in various ways.I use this for my Austrian mountain logging line.River sand is also good, beach sand will have salt.Yes,check out the bargain shops,a lot of things can be re-purposed.Happy hunting!

In regards to Testers paints It's still available But they are in the process of changing the paint formula from Oil base to acrylic . Some of the acrylic is working it's way to the hobby shops . Right there in Utah is M R S trains look them up not too far from you he may still have some of the paints . Doug has supplied me with other brands of paints along with a few model kits . Give him a call or go checkout the shop . PS In the past when I was building trees I used the hairspray Aqua Net . It's pretty good at keeping everything together and drys clear flat .

I wonder what granite fines would look like for outdoor ballast? Being triangular it would lock together and be less likely to blow away. Also being granite, it's nature is heavier than kitty litter. You would have to obtain the really fine stuff. It's amazing as real life road ballast and locks the larger pieces together.

I hope your outdoor "ballast" doesn't attract feline fly tippers - that would be a clump too far! ;-) Regarding you coal and cornstarch (and to a lesser extent Woodland Scenics ballast and cornstarch) mixes, have you tried putting them in a bag and shaking it up to get a more even coating before spreading it on the layout and adding soapy water? I think it would coat it better than "cement" mixing a pile with a brush. Liquitex do a good matt acrylic varnish that, amongst probably many things, would unshine your squirrel dirt - there's a sentence I thought I'd never use!!! ;-)

Indeed! I had a cat, so I know about cat litter! All kinds, because cats are finicky by nature! On a serious note... I have found many uses for cheap non-clumping clay cat litter, other than putting it in a cat litter box. One use is to soak up motor oil and other automotive spills on cement. Another use is to weigh down outdoor planter boxes... Especially when planting fake plants, like the ones I use! I don't have a green thumb and have been known to kill the heartiest of silk flowers too! I figured... What the heck! Clay cat litter is inexpensive to use..
