Hand Laying Track on our Indoor Garden Railroad

While stuck inside we are working on the layout! While a garden railroad, much of the railroad is inside. And with hand-laid track! This week staining ties, spiking rail and painting backdrop.
We are using red cedar ties stained with Watco dark walnut Danish oil thinned with mineral spirits and dry brushed over with acrylic grey-tan paint to create a weathered wood appearance.
The Micro Engineering code 250 rail is then hand spiked in place using Micro Engineering large spikes, Micro Engineering snap on track gauge and the Micromart spiking tool.
AND Karyn is working on the backdrop using the techniques taught to us by Robby Spangler, one of the great backdrop artists.
Then a bit of messing around rolling cars back and forth.

I think it’s really great that you’re willing to talk openly about some of the missteps and changes in plans you’ve had to make. Very rarely do things go exactly to plan and mistakes always happen, so learning to be adaptive and to pass along lessons learned are very helpful for other modelers.

We are in different gutters together, Dale. I'm working outdoors these days. Staining a wood coaling tower that I bought from a friend and has seen way too much Arizona sun. Linda commented on the smell of the Watco Dark Walnut (I ran out and Amazon came to the rescue). I repeated your comment on its smell vs. creosote. She agreed, but added, "Not by much." I plan to put a layer of Watco Teak marine over the Dark Walnut - after the Dark Walnut has a few days in the AZ sun to cure. Need all the protection we can get here. Now to repaint the figures and work on the solar / battery lights. AND I'm laying brass 45mm track (a mixture of USA, LGB and Piko) in the back yard. The USA track is "golden" brass with black ties and the other two are "dark" brass with brown ties. So, I'm using a trick I found out a few years back. Using the Rust-Oleum Earth Brown Camouflage paint, I paint the track: rail and ties. Using power-on-board, so the electrical contact is unnecessary. I don't bother to clean the used track, just spray away. After a few years in the AZ sun (that, again) the rails look like rusty steel and the ties look like creosoted wood. As for your issue with the rail joiners, I recommend power drops to every section of track. That way, the conductivity (or lack there-of) of the rail joiners becomes immaterial.

Hi!! Yup same camp paint!!! It’s the perfect color. Sept I’m out of it and Walmart hasn’t got any either. Damn. Ordered more Watco. Still on order. Slow shipping these days. Damn virus. The brass is great fir outside. I’m tempted but I have 600 feet of aluminum. Well 600 finished so 1200. Anyway it what I had on the old railroad but wold prefer brass. A lot!!! Much better. Back to Watco. It fades. A lot. Sun or no. But I love adding more. The color gets richer. But outside it will all but vanish in a year. It will also spontaneously catch fire!!! If you have it on a cloth either soak it in water or but it in an air tight can but never just leave it out!! Inside or outside. Sun or shade. It may just catch fire. Burned down my house. No lie.

Oh and on my old garden railroad I started by digging a trench. About 5 inches deep. Everywhere the track was going. Then I put orange extensions cord in the bottom. The three wire kind i soldered the ends together forming a 300 foot long loop and hooked the green wire to the neutral on my two power supplies. Both ends of the wire. Then I soldered a few feet of wire to the green wire every 6 feet all the way around. Later I filled in the trench with fine gravel and laid the track on that. And connected those drop wires at every joint on one rail. The other two conductors in the orange cords were connected to the hot on each supply. As the wires were black and white I called the two supplies black and white. Then I tapped those two wires in three places around the railroad and put a double throw switch at each location on a small control panel. Then a feeder to each joint to every joint on the other rail. Anyway never had a bad section. Or loss of voltage or problems. And every section of the layout could be set to the black or white power supply.

@@ToyManTelevision Got Watco Dark Walnut in two days on Amazon Prime. But the Rust-Oleum is back ordered until mid May. Still got two cans, so I'm pressing on.

An observation about your track-you are putting the spikes in line with each other. The spikes should be off the center line of the ties-outside spikes on one side and the inside spikes on the other side of the tie. The tie plates should be installed with the 2 holes on the outside of the track or end of the tie. Remember the plates are supposed to the canted and the cant tips the rails toward the center of the track. When using the plates keep the outside or field side spikes on the same side of the tie; with those plates the inside spikes will be in the center of the tie. I would suggest using a small drill bit and drilling holes for the spikes to lessen the chance of splitting the ties. Use a bit about 1/2 the diameter of the spikes. At 15:09 the inside spike of the left rail is backwards. Straight track though. As a track man I notice things like that.
@ToyManTelevision
@ToyManTelevision 4 года назад
Hi. I am now working on tracks one and two with the tie plates in place. And yes I’m putting the two holes to the outside in the single hole in the middle. The key to putting the tie plates down I’m finding is to only put the spikes in about halfway. Slide a tie plate under the rail and then go ahead and put in both spikes about halfway. Then when I move onto the next tie plate I can lift the rail to slide the tie plate in place. Once all of the tie plates and spikes are in place go back and tighten everything up. My plan is to then come back and whether the Thai place in place. I tried putting the tie plates in place that are already painted and they tend to get scratched so I think I’ll just come back after the fact and put a little rusty paint on each one.

Can't really add more here, as what's been said below is pretty much "likewise I'm sure". Traveler 1980's thought is special and extremely true. The PC is on it's fifth round; but, each time one does this, the next time should be better. Thank you for admitting to the mistakes and the second guessing. The how to books rarely ever cover the "here's what I messed up". As I've always said, "failure at first; and, it's correction thereafter, gives you two new learning tools: How to do it wrong and how to do it right. It makes us better educators when guiding folks though something new. And, reiteration of the screw ups are is always good for a giggle or a good old belly laugh.

I found the patients is sort of a relative thing. It’s much easier to do something difficult if you have a really good plan and you just take your time. Where I lose patience is where I’m trying to put together something that seems like it should be very simple and it’s fighting back. But to sit down and cobble something together from scratch based on your own plan and idea is completely stressless.

The backdrop looks very dramatic and effective actually. Love the technique for rail laying too btw. On the front tracks why not leave say 5 or 6 ties in a row unweathered and partially spiked so it looks like the track crew have been out and replaced a section and are coming back to it later as they do in the prototype. In the prototype I've also noticed on wooden ties they sometimes substantially angle one tie and leave it like that. I've always wondered why, but you never ever see that with concrete ties. Perhaps they do it because the the gap between the ties in that spot is too narrow to fit 2 ties so they angle one to fill the gap?? We're socially isolated and aren't allowed to drive unless it's for groceries, work (if you can't work from home), or going to the doctor. All camping is banned and no visits to family you don't live with. I can't even visit my son. They're handing out $1650 fines aplenty for breaking the rules. Upside?; we're almost on top of new infections and the state government are committed to keeping it that way. It's for the greater good. We are allowed out to exercise for an hour. Word 'round the campfire this is going to continue until at least early 2021 since the economic stimulus package is designed for 6 months and they're making plans as I type this for plans after 6 months. I just have a feeling things might never go back to the way they were before and I'm unsure if that's good, bad or somewhere in between. I think this will change society for a very long time at least.

Hi. Here they are a bit nuts. Some of the people here still insist it’s all fake. And the governor refuses to lock the state down in spite of federal guidelines. So the restaurants in theaters and gathering places are closed all big venues closed in a lot of places have closed voluntarily but a lot of people are still going out and shopping for clothes and whatever else they feel like. Our mayor put fines in place for going out and the governor quickly overruled him and said you can’t do that! Sort of in limbo. I’ve thought about “new” ties. I’m planning to do a few details like that one of which will be at least one spike barrel laying over on its side with the spikes spilling out. In the. I model in spikes were packed and wooden barrels fairly small because the spikes for heavy, and they would be thrown off of a flat car where they would usually smash on the ground next to the track spilling all those spikes all over ready to be used. But as a kid I would always look for the ones that didn’t break and I finally found one that I could dump over and take the barrel and leave the spikes behind and I have that barrel here in the garage! Anyway I want to model of that and intact barrel over on its side with the spikes spilling out.
@Deadbuck73

Toy Man Television we used to walk our local tracks as kids in search of spikes... we’d find one here and there! Then the railroad decided to replace the ties... and they left a huge pile of new spikes! If you were building a modern railroad, all of the ties would have to be perfect because, as you know, they are perfectly installed, and aligned. Being a wee tiny bit off from each other adds that old fashioned touch. Me likee. Too bad the rail joiners don't have built in "bolts" to add authenticity. If you are going to the trouble of spiking, think about putting dots on the clips. P.S. I like the opening scenes.
@ToyManTelevision
@ToyManTelevision 4 года назад
Hi. Yup in making “fish plates” to bolt the joints. Even though half of them won’t really be joints. Debating on how to do that. Next week I’m showing how I can cast track components and I’m thinking of making them that way. But they’re really small in the mold I make is really big and it seems like a waste of a mold unless they put like 100 of them in there. And if I have 100 of them I don’t need to cast any. It’s a conundrum.

Just a thought for your aluminum joiners. Are you running power to each section between the joiners or you could run a thin copper jumper wire and solder it in place. I agree there is a difference in resistance in aluminum and copper/brass.
@ToyManTelevision
@ToyManTelevision 4 года назад
So far on the indoor sections my plan is to run one jumper wire to every length of rail. As a matter fact that’s what I did this afternoon! That all connected together by a 12 gauge bus. Outdoor will be pretty much the same except I’m going to use orange extension cords with the ends cut off and soldered together as my bus as it’s much more weatherproof. Then bring one jumper up at each rail Joiner. Yes I can’t Sauter to the rails I’m going to clamp it with the rail joiner.

Would a railway bother putting sleeper plates down in a yard unless it was very busy? Save the dollars. Keep the plates for the running lines. I like the idea of spikes. When I was involved with rebuilding a section of line, initially I think we only put in every 4th sleeper. That way per way trains could run distributing the other sleepers, plates and spikes, and later ballast. Here in Victoria, Australia currently you can be fined for "just going for a drive" as some people have found out. Karryn please where your seat belt like Dale.
@ToyManTelevision

Here they are actually encouraging people to go out and get some sun and air just not interchange with anyone. Driving with people from your own home is encouraged as is going for long walks around the neighborhood. As long as you don’t approach anyone and they don’t approach you. Unfortunately it’s really fomenting some aggressive antisocial behavior. No matter. In researching the old Rio grande in the 1960s they would use tieplates wherever they felt like it. You would see a bit of track there might be 10 tie plates on 10 ties in the next 20 ties had nothing. I’m assuming it’s just which ever crew laid them and what they they had access to. Pretty scattered approach. So that’s kind of what I’m simulating. On the main-yard tracks everything will be in plates. Everywhere else it’s a crapshoot.

Are the rail joiners _pure aluminum?_ FWIW: I have worked in aviation, and from that learned pure aluminum is actually very corrosion resistant. However, it is also _rather soft,_ and that is why most aluminum used in aircraft is an alloy. I know that you can get galvanic corrosion between steel and aluminum, although I do not know if _pure aluminum_ is immune to that or not.
