I usually use floss for my elastic because if I use string it will usually rip or tear when I put my shoes on if I did not put the elastic at the perfect spot or the perfect length. Even tho I am used to this and know what I need I still make little mistakes when measuring. On my first pair of pointe shoes, I cut the elastics too short so the shoe would be really tight on my heel and I had to pull my elastics to put the shoe on. The string ended up snapping after a few days so I needed to replace it.

People need to watch how pointe shoes are made to understand why their lifespan is so variable. Most shoes are made with common durable materials: rubber, cotton, canvas, etc.. Pointe shoes may seem durable when you feel how strong the box is fresh out of the bag, but that's like saying a stack of papers is strong enough to stop a bullet (spoilers it's not). The box is basically paper mache and add in sweat and body weight, only then will you understand why the amount of time spent dancing and the type of dancing play such an important part in the shoes breaking down. Plus because every shoe is handmade and it's more of an art than a typical assembly line the price reflects that. Finding the right pointe shoes isn't as easy as grabbing the right size. Since they are handmade each maker has a particular feel, similar to handwriting the end result is the same but they way it is done is unique. Do they start shaping with their right or left hand, are they new or old in the business, who taught them? All of these are factors in the fit and feel of the shoe.

I am not near an advanced level. I use my pointe shoes for about 6 hours a week and they are normally bad after two months. As I don't have all the money to buy six pairs of pointe shoes a year I keep wearing bad ones with adjustments. We are always trying to make them last and professional dancers really need that. That's why some companies give the dancers pointe shoes. As it is very expensive, companies are constantly asking for donations so they can do that. The ballet world is very restricted because of the amount of money that it takes, but is such a beautiful art form. There should be more projects to encourage young dancers, and I'm glad that nowadays people value it more
@Author.Noelle.Alexandria
@Author.Noelle.Alexandria 3 года назад
At 6 hours a week, you should be replacing them every 2-3 weeks. It's a safety issue. At the least, buy 4 pairs and alternate them after half an hour or so of wearing. That will get more wear out of each pair, though a pair still isn't going to be supportive for 50 hours. Any professional company will provide their dancers with a shoe stipend.
@poketvenus
@poketvenus 3 года назад
@@Author.Noelle.Alexandria it really depends on the dancer. I used to do about 30 hours a week, and about half of that en pointe a week. I'd buy two pairs of shoes to alternate, and get about 4 months out of them, even after I took almost half the shank out. I'd glue the wings once a week or so, but as long as they got dry between uses I could get a lot of wear out of them.
@chrognos
@chrognos 3 года назад
My heart goes out to you, I have a friend that goes through a similar experience. She’s been on pointe for 5 years but her mom still only buys her two pairs a year starting last year, before that she only got one even when her feet were growing. They die really quickly but she’s never had the chance to try any different kinds because of how few she gets. She dances around the same amount you do. I don’t know how she does it. There’s basically no box or support and she doesn’t use her glue either. Her family is fairly well off but she has 5 siblings and her mom doesn’t think she needs any more despite trying to convince her otherwise.
@BellaDeMonia
@BellaDeMonia 3 года назад
@@Author.Noelle.Alexandria You literally missed her whole point about the privledge of being able to have four sets on rotation. It's not true every company provides shoe stipend. Hi! I’m an Irish dancer most people don’t know what that is but if you know what Riverdance is then you are on the right track. Anyway we have two pairs of shoes, the first shoe is a soft shoes which is like a ballet shoe and the second pair of shoes is hard shoes which is like a tap shoe. With hard shoes you can go up on point just like pointe shoes and we actually have to dance on point on one foot. There are actually shoes that allow you to go on point!

Every dancer seems to have their own style of breaking them in, which is so cool. But I can’t help but think someone really needs to invent a better means of pointe shoe, so they can last a professional longer than just a weekend.

Same here! I am happy to know I am not alone though… I have watched so many pointe shoe videos and have not seen anyone sew only to the inner lining - I was starting to wonder if it was just my teacher or an outdated way??

To the people who may be confused: not everyone’s pointe shoes last three days. Some people need a new pair every week , and some can last a few months. It all depends on the way your foot is in the shoe/ how strong and flexible they are. Also shoes come in different shank hardnesses (is that a word lol) so that also has a lot to do with how long it lasts. Hope that helped clear any confusion people might have.

Elastic ribbons saved me. I’m someone who has strong feet/ankles, but they’re not that flexible. When I used to do pointe, my shanks were too hard and the ribbons were too restricting and aggravated my tendons. My magic combo was a flexible-soft shank and elastic ribbons. I cried the first time I tried them; it was amazing.

Not all ballerinas go through pointe shoes this fast! She is a professional, so to her, her pointe shoes are like a cook needing to constantly re-sharpen their knives. As an advanced late teenager, dancing 5 classes a week, I was going through 1 pair a month on average, so I had to special order my Russians with a stronger shank so they didn’t die so quickly. Depends on the weather too, in summer they die faster because of the heat/sweat. And also, I encourage everyone who wants to try ballet or any other form of dance to just go do it! If you’re an adult, a beginner or whatever, just try it. It’s an amazing athletic art form that teaches you so much about your body and life. There’s always more to learn and you never perfect it, because there is no way to, in fact, be perfect in ballet. I’m going on 16 years dancing ballet and it’s honestly my most favorite thing in the world😊🩰
