vimeo.com/3676... The "Balloërveld" is a hamlet and a 367-hectare heath field in the municipality of Aa and Hunze, in the Dutch province of Drenthe.
The heathland is located between Gasteren, Rolde and Loon and owes its name to the nearby village of Balloo. The hamlet lies on the old main road Loon - Gasteren,
on the edge of the Nationaal Beek- en Esdorpenlandschap Drentse Aa. In 2016, 22 people lived in the hamlet. The number of houses in 2014 was eight.
The heathland is situated on a high plateau between the valleys of Looner Diep and Rolderdiep.
A special feature is that the heather as part of the National Brook and Esdorpen Landscape Drentse Aa together with the surrounding brook valleys can be managed as a reserve.
The predominantly heather and grazed heather vegetation is sparsely interspersed with peat bogs, some pine forest and small sand drifts here and there.
The shepherds of Balloo graze the Balloese field by order of the Forestry Commission. The field is crossed by a network of dirt roads and cart tracks, some of which date back to before the Middle Ages.
Archaeological research has revealed burial mounds, an urn field and remnants of arable farming from the Iron Age, as well as finds that point to stone age habitation.
