On March 26, 2024 a cargo ship crashed into Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge, causing a near-total collapse of the bridge and halting shipping traffic into and out of the Port of Baltimore. We got to this tragic scene only hours after it happened. This was an absolutely terrible disaster and our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of those involved.

From all the “experts” they have had on all these news channels, you are the only person that I have heard talk about the way the propeller works when a ship this size is slammed into reverse and the size of the propeller makes it walk in the water! Has given me a much better understanding of what was happening when this disaster happened. Thank you Luke . Thoughts and prayers for the families of all those lost in this tragedy. RIP 🙏 to all those that lost their lives in this tragic accident.

Hey Luke. I'm up in Elkton. I'm not a commercial fisherman, but I want to do what I can to promote recovery efforts in the recreational fishing communities. I don't want to go picking a charitable organization out of a hat. If you know of any that are really putting in the work, I hope you'll let us know who they are. I can't do much, but I can contribute and encourage others to do the same. Appreciate you, brother. You're a good egg. We're all starting to figure out what this thing means. Hey Luke, normally just a lurker on your videos, but I thought I'd mention a little personal experience here. I went over the I-35W bridge hours before it went in the water (crossed twice that day). I didn't know the bridge went down until a relative called to ask if I was okay. The entire area changed financially because of the bridge collapse, and it was... surreal not seeing the bridge there daily. My thoughts and hopes for the people of Baltimore. You’re a good man Luke. It didn’t take this for me to know it, but I do feel like you should hear (read, know) it. You’re a good dude. You are a Marylander, Waterman, Yeoman through and through. Growing up on the same water you did, influenced by the same old-timers, albeit a generation before, you honor that legacy so well. And it’s not contrived, you are an old soul and you do those men an incredible honor by carrying on that legacy. They make less and less like you these days, but it’s guys like you that give me hope the legacy will live on. Your heart for the blue-collar Everyman. Your reverence for the bay. The respect and humility you show towards those who shaped you. These factor’s among many more bear witness to a culture that people need to know and you are a tremendous role model for anyone watching. For anyone that didn’t grow up on the Chesapeake and wants a sense of the character of this dying but important cultural influence, for whatever it’s worth; Luke is a real-one.

Luke, hang in there! I was in the Navy for 10 years as a Electrician and I have been on a few ships. People don’t understand everything that needs to happen to make the rudder turn and reverse the engines. When you lose total power like that it doesn’t just respond instantly, when the power comes back on.

I learned early on running a trawler to stay the fk away from any ship that size while on the water. They can't just stop or turn on a dime even in perfect condition while under power.

I’m not a boater, but even I know a large ship doesn’t handle like a speedboat or jet ski, which is what I think many people assume. I saw a brick immortar video before the collapse about an Alaskan fishing trawler that sank and remember from the report that there were crucial control elements (I think rudder and engine controls) that were electically driven with no backups if the main generators fail (with it being noted that the ship as originally designed had a mechanical hydraulic pump to allow control in case of power failure, but this was changed in a major rebuild) so when I saw the video with the power failing on the ship, I was immediately reminded of that as it was listed as a contributing factor to the ship sinking as quickly as it did

Living in Stoney Beach - the closest residential community downstream of the disaster -, we're feeling the direct brunt of the emotions of the event. Our community was crawling with gawkers and media the day of the collapse. Now we're seeing things wash up on our shores. We've been fighting to clean up the river and polluters on it and, recently, fighting to keep the state from dumping dredge contaminated by industrial runoff from being dumped off our shore. It's just sad. It's time to hold the Patapsco as sacred. It's part of the Chesapeake and is the lifeblood of our communities in Northern Anne Arundel County. Thank you Luke for giving a local perspective.

@@Freedom17762 It takes awhile to put that type of engine into reverse. The firing order of the pistons has to be reversed, so it is something they were in the process of doing as soon as the engine shutdown. Although it is questionable that they actually ever got it to reverse fire. That black smoke could have been a failed attempt to restart the engine in forward. Either way, it's not like the captain or harbor pilot just hit a switch, they where on the phone with the engine room and engineers where trying to restart the engine. We also don't know if they ever regained rudder control. All of this will be needed to answered by the investigation.

I realize that this effects Luke much more than most of us in this comment section. You can't sum up this whole incident with prop walk. I'm familiar with how unresponsive maneuvering single screw at low speeds can be. My biggest conundrum in this is that if any one of those "blackouts" literally shut down the main engine, then there is no way the main was ever restarted.(not enough time by a long shot) If that is true , then there is no way that ship went full astern and never prop walked. Meaning the smoke that was visible had to have come from one of the generators. If this is not the case and the main never shut down, then it's like he said earlier, words cannot describe.
@Hangovna
@Hangovna 3 месяца назад
Yes, as someone who is familiar with wake boats, there is no steering in reverse as the rudder is behind the prop and the rotation of the prop will walk the boat in that direction. Hence why they are coming out with stern thrusters now.
@jeffnpatricia
@jeffnpatricia 3 месяца назад
I mean that’s fair. But it still baffles me on what made an experienced pilot decide to go full reverse on such a mass in momentum. Why didn’t experience guide the pilot to steer with their new found power. I donno I’m sure I’ll be called names for asking questions

To people not from areas like ours, its hard to convey what these bridges mean to us. Its a constant love-hate relationship with the traffic, a life blood, the way to grandma's house, a marvel of engineering, a point of pride, an icon of the city. We dont have sky scrapers, we have these bridges. They are so ingrained in our local identity when we lose them, it feels like we lost part of ourselves. I have been over that bridge thousands of times. It is crazy. I am born and raised on the water like you. Baltimore has been my home for 40 years. Many years crabbing with my family out on the same waters. I worked as a boat mechanic out of Edgemere. For us that grew up here and have relied on the bay to feed our families and the number of workers at the port and the amount of people that will be affected by this is crazy to think about. My grandfather and great uncles helped to build that bridge. They swung around on ropes to bolt and rivet the bridge together. My grandfather used to joke with my mom when we drove over the bridge and he would say "You know how many nuts and bolts we missed!" He was joking and they didn't leave anything off and they took pride that they had something to do with the building of that bridge back in the early 70s. It opened Baltimore up to more industry and commerce and this will impact us for the next decade.

Hey Luke, along with the thought of “Prop Walk” another factor could also be that when they dropped anchor (which would be procedure in a loss of power) the stern would swing that direction if they dropped the port anchor and forward momentum would swing the ship. The closer video images show the port anchor is down. Being from Baltimore and working the water in Baltimore and now in Savannah GA, this is a tragedy. It could have been worse if the Pilots, Captain and crew didn’t do all that they could to avert this. Thoughts and prayers go out to the family’s of those lost and those that will be affected by this tragedy.

9:07 I knew from watching the video this was an accident, clearly you can see the diesel smoke pouring out meaning they put the ship in reverse to try to not hit the bridge. And dude if you listen to the radio traffic between the fire dept and police, they are were calm cool and collected. That dispatch lady needs a metal of honor for handling that much traffic so calmly. Shout out to BCFD,BCPD, coast guard, DNR and many more 🫡

that smoke was the gen set firing up, if the ship had power it would have turned way sooner, it wouldn't have went dark if it had power ..it was hacked, this is what happens when you attack another countries infrastructure

This will cost Baltimore and a lot of others into the trillions before this is all over. There are 40 major cargo ships inside the port now along with a couple ocean cable layers, couple Navy ships, a Coast Guard / Navy Repair yard and a hundred others that can't leave. There are also 2 cruise ships out to sea that can't come back. Not to mention all the other companies that are on the waterfront including a Dominos Sugar processor that can't receive or ship out anything that did half a billion in business last year alone. And this is all before the clean up and rebuild starts.

The recovery will be much quicker than folks are expecting. It is amazing what crews can do when it is a top priority and there is an open checkbook. Permits and other environmental reviews will be expedited or not required. The channel will be open one or two months. New bridge will take longer.
@finscreenname
@finscreenname 3 месяца назад
@@NorWis744 Not a chance. There is a number of ABC agencies already fighting over who is in charge. You throw in the USCG, the US Navy, EPA, port authorities, dept of transportation, dept of nat resources, homeland security, etc.... and that's federal. Then wait until the deep blue state of Maryland sticks their fingers in the pie it will be a crap show for months to come. And then there is the insurance companies. No matter if Biden wants tax payers to pay for this or not they are not going to until after all the insurance companies have been bled dry. Just think 9/11 without the terrorism it took 15 years until they put up the new building.

Hay Luke long time Eastern Shore boy here and being a long time user of the Key Bridge over and under it more times than I can count I have to say that you had me choked up a few times I can feel your pain my friend . I have moved out of the area but my heart will always be in the Chesapeake Bay . I am guessing but it seems to me like you may be a little luckier than most people as you may be able to go to travel to work by boat each day. And I have a feeling that the waterman may get together to help each other out in this way and maybe figure out a way to get people other than the ones that make their living on the water to work each day . Right now the main thing is getting the channel open again so shipping can resume. Take care my brother my heart goes out to everyone

Thank you, Luke. Thank you for doing your best to shut down these ghouls who are "curious", thinking Jewish space lasers maybe targeted the engine, or whatever. That ship, like thousands before it, had a mechanical breakdown at just the wrong time and they did their best to recover. It hit that one bridge pylon with close to the force of the rocket that sent men to the moon. No way would it survive. It's a terrible tragedy, with lives lost that most of these folks would never appreciate.

That boat crew did an ADMIRABLE job. They gave it hell and did everything they possibly could. They saved people by getting out the mayday in time to keep anyone else off the bridge. I am so tired of idiots that think everything is a conspiracy, and everyone is negligent. In this case there is direct video evidence of what happened....and they STILL persist.

Thanks for sharing Luke and I appreciate your videos having sailed through Chesapeake Bay last year and grown up there as well. It’s such a difficult tragedy and reality is prevention will hopefully be a part of the rebuilt bridge but how tragic it wasn’t already based on the 1980 crash.
