Maryland state governor Wes Moore has said that a cargo ship lost power before smashing into one of the columns supporting the landmark Francis Scott Key Bridge in the city of Baltimore, causing its collapse.
Several vehicles were crossing the bridge when the container ship collided with one of its supports. Six people are unaccounted for and a number of vehicles fell into the water.
Officials said the ship suffered a "power issue" and issued a Mayday distress call moments before the crash. Boats and helicopters are part of a huge search and rescue effort searching for the missing people. The authorities said they were part of a construction crew repairing potholes at the time the bridge collapsed.
.
Two people were pulled from the water, with one in a serious condition.
The Singapore-flagged container ship, Dali, struck a support column on the bridge after departing from the terminal at Port Breeze, bound for Sri Lanka.
A US federal government agency said the vessel "lost propulsion" as it was leaving the port. The crew then warned Maryland transport officials of a possible collision, according to an unclassified Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency report on the incident.
Sophie Raworth presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Sumi Somaskanda, Gary O’Donaghue and Rebecca Morelle.

They did have tugboats, but it’s a deeply dredged and well mapped shipping channel. Tugs aren’t needed to avoid the bridge. The tugs take the ships to the center of the channel and pilots take the ships out of the entire Chesapeake Bay under their own power. Now if for instance a subsidiary of major shipping conglomerate like Maersk doesn’t maintain their ships because they choose profit over safety, things like this can happen.

This was talked about today on a retired merchant mariner's channel, What's Going on with shipping, it would require the people on the bridge to pretty much instantly divine that the ship horn was sending a message to them & then for them to deduce what the message was. Both points are most unlikely.

Correct. I would be just as suspicious of the ship management company’s operational playbook at large. Pennypinching on parts, skill-training , and operational expenses /preventive maintenance has been the hallmark of the int’l shipping industry over the last decade-plus . it’s a race to the bottom. Some groups have shown themselves to be more cutthroat than others in this regard i.e. the cheaper, the better; if something happens, we are insured, and there’s lots of ways to dilute the blame..

From what I know about the us, this is pretty much guaranteed to be human error from top to bottom. Maintenance failures, cost cutting, cutting corners, breaches by the captain and/or staff on the ship, all that good stuff. When you put profits before safety, you'll eventually lose on both fronts. And drowning isn't a nice way to go. I can only hope the debris did the job quickly before the water did it slowly.

The MV Dali is a large Panamax container ship with a total dead weight tonnage of almost 200,000 tons. Yes, that is correct, actually 196,000 tons. It is chartered by Maersk Shipping. It has one 56,000 hp diesel engine to drive the single shaft, but it does have several very large engines for electrical power. That everything would shut down at the same time, then come back online at the same time is inconceivable. These ships have multiple redundancy that rivals aircraft. BUT, 200k tons moving even a brisk walk of say, 3 1/2 mph would have kinetic energy most people cannot even understand: 213,947,229 ft/lbs to be exact. So, yeah, bringing down this bridge was nothing. The ship didn't carry through very far as it looks like the pilots had slammed the engine into full reverse but far, far too late to stop the ship.

Those pillars that the bridges sitting on should’ve been surrounded by cement to prevent the pillars from being touched by the ship. Just like when they put post around gas pumps and anything viral you’re going to hit the post and the damage before you get to the vital parts. That’s why they should do build huge cement blocks around these pillars so the ship runs into it. It won’t even touch the pillars.

The bridge is not far at all from the port. The time it took for them to react was likely the same amount of time as any signs were there. I do think they could have informed of a possibility of failure sooner even if it wasn’t sure that it was imminent. There are several minutes of uncertainty between when power was lost and when collision happened.
