For millions of years different countries throughout Southeast Asia have eaten fertilzed duck egg, but not until now are we able to compare two duck lovers, each in their home turf. In the Philippines they call it Balut and in Vietnam, it's known as hột vịt lộn. Today I try both as they go head to head leaving you to decide which is best. Ready? Go!

I'm Vietnamese but was raised in the US and over here, whenever my family eats those duck eggs, we eat them in a similar fashion to Filipinos but instead of salt and vinegar, we dip it in a mix of salt, pepper, and lime and then chase it with the herb. I have honestly never even heard of the tamarind sauce thing.

rFsinTheta It is another way of cooking and serving baluts. They also cover them in batter, deep fry them, and serve them with a special fish sauce. These recipes are out there, aka in Vietnam, for at least 20 years. People come up with new ways to cook the same ingredients all the time.

I love how she kept reminding you to eat that herb (Vietnamese coriander) together with everything because herbs are really important in Vietnamese food. I'd like to believe our choice of herbs for each specific dish was a product of hundreds/thousands of years of experimentation. The right choice of herb enhances or brings out the taste of the main ingredients even better. And of course wrong choice of herbs also destroys the taste. Anyways, Vietnamese balut is eaten with salt pepper and Vietnamese coriander like that quail egg you ate in the video. I just love how simple it is, yet it made it so much better than eating it plain.

Dennis Ravago it's okay no herb for Pinoy dishes. but mostly Philippines dishes have no green leaf veggies too. Honestly i can eat one meal, two meal or couple day without veggies But for a whole week, whole month no veggies, no veggies soup in the dishes im about to die of tired & bored lolz 😂 i'm Vietnamese, i think Philippines should add more green veggies in their food. They eating too much rice and powder food (potatoes,etc..), meat but less green salad & green soup!! this is about true facts, nothing hateful or racist here before Philippines at alots rice, meat without veggies but 20-40year ago the country is still poor so alots people is walking exercise so people still fit & good healthy. but can't compare to today, while philippines growing economic, more motorcycle, public train,et.. no excercise, less walking, eat alots of rice & fries potatoes as veggies & meat in everyday dishes, it cause alots unhealthy people, heart problems & diabetes!

I'm from right next door in North Dakota and I took a trip to the Philippines to attend my buddies wedding. We tried the 14 day balut from a cart in Manila by Eco-Park and that was the by far the most disconcerting thing to look at but actually is amazingly tasty. I really like the vinegar they use over there, it's so mild and delicious. Keep up the show Sunny! Love the relaxed, lighter side that's exactly how trips should be.

@@alexarmanto2986 Same here in Vietnam my friend. Just because we use Vietnamese coriander for balut doesn’t mean we always eat it with it all of the time. @james bailey, it's pretty old in the Philippines. If you've ever encountered a balut vendor, ever realize that he's shouting a second word? The traditional cry is "balut, penoy". The second word, "penoy" refers to that unfertilized custardy egg which is incubated then boiled. The duality is there, because some Filipinos do not eat balut, so penoy is a perfectly viable option, similar taste, without the duck embryo.

Both are fine in a different aspect if you wanna enjoy only the BALUT itself use salt or vinegar, but if you wanna enjoy BALUT by adding some other ingredients it can be too, just like in the Phil. they are also making ADOBONG BALOT, IN OYSTER and so many more...

Philippine version: 1. PENOY is an infertile incubated duck egg or with dead embryo. ( custard/soupy texture) 2. BALUT is a fertilized developing egg embryo that is boiled and eaten from the shell. (Some restaurants cook/incorporate it in various Filipino cuisines like adobo, sisig, etc.) 3. ABNOY EGG is an exotic delicacy made with unfertilized rotten duck egg then fried or steamed. 4. ITLOG NA MAALAT is a salted duck egg usually colored with pinkish red on the egg shell.

The classic Vietnamese way to eat balut is with salt and black pepper along with Vietnamese mint (rau ram). In central Vietnam such as Danang City, they add one more side dish which is pickled green papaya & carrots in ginger fish sauce, so pretty much all the flavors are packed in that version. You guys should try that version because it's bomb!

info: Balut originated in the Philippines in the early 1900's. The Philippine people were influenced by the Chinese presence back in 1885. Since then they have been preparing and eating Balut as an exotic dish. With the large migration of FIlipinos has come the rise in demand for Balut across the globe.

Balut is best eaten by different nationalities in their own ways. Only a foreigner not used to balut can say which tastes better (which is of course subjective based on his/her preference). I just want to add that Pinoys also cook balut in Adobo form. We also cook it kwek-kwek style.
@khaiphamba5991

In Northern Vietnam, the ballut is served quite simple. You just break the sheld, pour everthing into a small bowl (including the juice of course), adding salt, pepper. No sauce. BUT, the Vietnamese coriander and ginger are a must. That's the thing, most of the food in Vietnam has to go with a certain types of herb. They add to the flavour. They may make the same dish differently in each part of the country, but the herbs cannot be excluded.

Being a filipino and have tried food of south east asia i would say the viets won this one.. i know my fellow filipinos will not agree with me But being an OFW for decades and have been assigned in south east asia, i personally tried the sauce and herbs of other south east asian nations and it is really good.. In the philippines our base for our foods are always vinegar and soy sauce, an it is differrent in other nation. as you can see from here they uses herb and other things for their sauce. really nice.

There’s also just hard boiled duck egg. About the twist with balut, there are different ways of eating/cooking it. You just have to be a real filipino who drinks in a typical pinoy drinking session 😊😊 I have tried adobong balut
