A guy like myself, not ever afraid to ask someone for permission when things are being thrown away. I rarely have to buy lumber, always grabbing throw away stuff. I planted bamboo years ago for privacy from a neighbor, now it's everywhere! Once you learn how to split it, the possibilities become unreal. Have fun with it friend!
One of them snapped after shooting the video but two smaller diameter ones worked fine. So if you do it select diameters about 3/4 of an inch or so. The one I picked was around an inch.
There are many varieties of clumping, non running bamboo. We have a beautiful stand of Non running bamboo called Old Hamii, a gift from St.Leo College, San Antonio Florida, where my husband graduated. It is 50 feet tall now, beautiful, doesn’t run, and houses several red cardinals all winter. It loves our central Florida weather!
You said that you're going to wait until the leaves dry before composting them. Do you think that the bamboo can propagate from the leaves/side branches? I am using the branches and leaves for mulch. I use a machete, it is much quicker than pruners, just uploaded a video on my channel. I laid down the mulch of branches and leaves for a pathway and then added cardboard and woodchips. I didn't wait for it to dry because I don't think they'll propagate but I may not be right...we'll find out. Also I just watched a video here on YT where a lady had a DRY bamboo pole, which she bought from the store, root into the ground! Happy Gardening!
I'm not sure it can root from the leaves. I'm sure the nodes of the stalks have that possibility and definitely the roots do. I have never grown bamboo and was warned of its problems so many years ago so I prefer not to take any chances! The neighbir down the road from us removed a the stand of bamboo these stalks came from soon after I made this video and the shoots still come up like crazy.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I pulled out the poles I had by the goji berry just in case😅. They were in for months and we live in Pennsylvania and nothing rooted. I think the lady lives in Florida so it may be more common in such climates. I think it would be good to check the stalks in the ground once every few months just in case.
the tool you want to use cleaning those bmboo stalks is NOT pruners...use a machete, start at the TIP as in growing tip of the stalk and work your way backwards. i learned this lesson for myself...use a machete and the work is done fast and easy.\ dont use loppers either just stick with a machete or you have a lot of work ahead just cleaning them up.
The video has a few creative uses for bamboo. However, how ironic the multiple warnings to never plant the gift you received from me neighbor. This video would not exist without the bamboo. There are steps to take, such as creating a barrier, in order stop the spread of the plant. Why the negativity towards the gift you were creative enough to recognize?
Because it is a maintenance nightmare for them. The bamboo I picked up was just a small portion of what they cut out. Bamboo, despite what it can be used for, takes more work than most people can manage. Since this video was made they had someone clear the area of the bamboo with a forestry mulcher and daily 3ft shoots are springing up in the yard. It's not am easy thing to remove and takes aggressive steps to control it. I'm not being negative in any way. Merely stating the truth about this plant and it's issues.
