We test and review the new Bambu Lab A1 Mini, the new entry-level FDM 3D printer. With features inherited from its older Core-XY design siblings, this bed slinger is extremely speedy for its size and has its own multi-material filament switcher option that makes multi-color prints more accessible. Here's how its prints compare to the X1C and what you should know about multi-material printing.

You can save a lot of poop by turning on “purge into infill” and then increasing the infill, and you get the bonus of having a stouter print. It will still poop, but it will poop less. You’re just moving Some of the poop into the model.

@@sabotage3d if you just hit the little magnifying glass in the settings panel, search for ”flush.” I said “purge” but Bambu calls it “flush.” There are three useful options-you can flush into infill, flush into supports, or even flush into a separate object. So if you have a model whose colors don’t matter, you can use it as the purge block or in addition to the purge block. All of these settings will reduce poop.

I think as a single filament printer this looks good. With the AMS lite, it is very wasteful and takes up a lot of desktop space. For single filament it is going to give the Prusa Mini a run for its money. Now that the Prusa Mini has input shaping it would be interesting to see a side by side comparison.

@@LilApe Have you seen the sh*t Prusa is delivering recently??? The Prusa Mini just got a rushed firmware update that bricked a bunch of machines. MK4 with firmware bugs, non-functioning touchscreen, released without functioning input-shaping, weird print artifacts and poor quality printed parts. XL is taking years to deliver, $500 ''fully-assembled'' option still requires hours of assembly, also has badly printed parts, many faulty heated beds, almost impossible to get the tool-heads perfectly calibrated, no enclosure or chamber, super slow print speed. I've owned a MK2 and MK3, and had the XL pre-ordered for a while. Those early machines were great value and way ahead of other hobby machines but the got lazy and fell way behind. They were known for awesome support but that is lacking now as well. People buy $3000+ XLs that arrive faulty and when contacting support they get told to just fix it themselves. Bambu support is absolute ass indeed but Prusa aren't that much better nowadays, and Prusa's products are garbage compared to the competition. They got too comfortable being the top dogs and stopped looking at what the competition was doing.

Every other company collects the same data on you. And they also sell it to 3rd parties so that hackers and governments can buy it from data brokers and spy on you. This stuff happens in nearly all companies, not just bambu lab. It's pretty normal for a multi-color print where there's color differences at every layer. It has to purge filament otherwise you will get a nasty blend between the exchanged colors. Granted, you can reduce the purge filament quantity significantly in the settings, often with no degradation in color rendering. It's why I generally don't do multi-color prints very often, and when I do, I try to keep the color changes per object rather than per layer.

I have the A1 Mini for a while now, been printing almost 24/7. It is not as good as my P1P, but prints are similar enough. I do find the mini AMS to be much more reliable than P1P AMS. The problem with the A1 Mini is that the bed moves, so prints often gets thrown off the bed and makes adhesion more difficult. The AMS mini also have problems. The machine will not push filament in and will print in mid-air unless you push it pass the first tube which is often difficult to do manually because it keeps hitting something inside. There are not enough colors in the screen to pick my filament color so my prints comes out in different colors because I was confused with the settings. It also causes filament to tangle often because it is difficult to insert the filament from the bottom and I would accidently drop the strand and insert it the wrong way which tangles during print. It also doesn't turn off after a print job. I use an outlet timer to turn it off but sometimes the printer gets stuck and the timer keeps running so the print suffers from power loss.

The A1 is expected in 5 weeks for $500 for 85% of the capability with far less complexity than an extruder swapping system. The size difference is obviously a benefit to the Prusa but for most the smaller printer is plenty adequate for what most prints need. Anyway, now is an exciting time for consumer and enthusiast 3d printers. Both of these machines are large jumps forward from just a couple years ago. It is good for us all. Take care and enjoy it.

What is the model that is briefly displayed at 20:27 of the video? I am impressed by the small printer, but I do have my concerns. Bambulabs is not friendly to open source, the amount of waste is significant, the cantilever looks like it may become a problem in the future because of no support, and may become easily damaged or unusable after prolonged use. I do like the spare build plate, and the small footprint for single color prints, but the AMS makes the Mini printer suddenly so much larger, and won't fit in a small space. I do like to faster build speeds.

Proprietary software only, 'cloud' operation, cantilevered hot end, and double the material waste? Any of those is an instant 'no'. That's a tiny build volume for the footprint and a lot of money for a multi-material setup. The bed in the video is crooked. The purging time is slow and I'm watching at double speed. You can't move the filament spools but ok sure, Bambu, it's definitely an A4 footprint, not dishonest at all. It can't even do ABS. Call me a grump but apart from print accuracy I don't see anything good about this printer. If I want a four-color print I'll just make each colored section a different part or paint it rather than wait a whole day and deal with a printer poop pile.

What you said about multi-color printing waste is mostly right but pls remember that if you don't want multi-color printing, A1 is only 300, which is an awesome deal as an entry level printer considering how much if offers.
@aiyouwocaonimade
@aiyouwocaonimade Год назад
W.r.t. multi-color printing waste, those waste + purge towner are needed by all MMU machines. I would say it's cost that you have to pay if you want to do multi-color printing. However, as an X1C owner + 2 AMS, it's really not that bad. 1. Default purge volume is super generous, which is why you need this much waste in the video. You can tune the settings yourself. You only need a large purge volume if the prior color is very dark, like black. 2. Object to waste ratio can be significant reduced if you print more than 1 objects because purged filament is fixed per layer so the more you print, the larger object to waste ratio it is. 3. The waste doesn't have to be wasted, I mean you can: (a) purge into infill. (2) purge into another object. With (a), just be careful when you use non-opaque filament, e.g. Polymaker PLA Yellow. With (2), you can print a functional part along with your main print and a lot of purged filament can be used to print that object.

@@aiyouwocaonimade What exactly does it offer? The new Ender 3 models have auto bed leveling, and a webcam is 15€, so that's half the price for those features and you get a more stable printer with a bigger print volume. Edit: I know why purge towers exist but having both the tower and the poop is what's objectionable. I also think that if you're paid to do a review of a product you'd probably want to adjust settings to show it at its best. Not being told that a review is as out-of-the-box makes one assume it's been fiddled with for the camera.

@@aiyouwocaonimadethat is not a good deal anymore. An ender 3 pro is like 100 dollars and is very comparable and also not a cantilever. Hell i built my own printer with auto bed leveling and input shaping for like 80 bucks. 300 dollars is far above what this machine is worth.

"a lot of money for a multi-material setup" Please, do elaborate. Prusa charges $299 for just the MMU upgrade (which works very poorly [I have one] and isn't even in stock ATM). @dannonyogurt98
@dannonyogurt98 Год назад
From what I understand the bowden tubes are a very specific length. the retraction process relies on a spring under tension and not a motor. So it is expecting an exact amount of travel. I could be wrong though, I just wouldn't start making any plans until its in hand.

Nice well rounded, excellent unbiased review👍👍. One of the few reviews, that actually shows the amount of poop waste. I would have preferred Bambu Lab better innovation to reduce waste instead of doing nothing much, while exponentially increasing it by making multicolor printing more accessible to everyone. I feel the focus here is to sell more material, since it could be more lucarative, like the nespresso minting money in making a robust espresso machine, which makes a lot in pod sales several magnitudes than the appliance itself. Most of the new innovations, are just to improve user acceptance, if you think about it. I would have loved, if they had done even a tiny bit to reduce the waste. I see it could be done in a couple of ways, simpler being a reduced melt chamber volume, with faster heating using high power on demand. The more involved being re-orienting model in slicer with a snap support material, still could be done with a loss of just one color. Another is to re-extrude into a new multicolor filament coil, instead of a useless purge. Could add cost,but could be provided as an option to a more conscientious user, that cares for the environment. Just some 💭♥️👍👍

The poop thing bothers me a lot as well; one option would be to use the would-be poop to print infill where possible so there is less waste produced. I don't care if my infill ends up blue or red in a red and blue print...just have it alternate based on the last color used.

The amount of waste is incredible. I do multi color prints of my own design but never make things that require this kind of process.
@aware2action
@aware2action Год назад
@@missingdogmusic That feature is already there, but not perfectly implemented, still will end up with lots of waste, if the layer changes are frequent. There is also the possibility to make the purge tower print like a support(print at a little higher Z-height, so it could be snapped off, sorted and saved for recycling later). But this will involve lot more pre-processing and planning in the slicer. It is not a bad idea, firstly will not leave flying poop debris all over work area, secondly will not reduce usage of material and associated profits. But any optimization, that cuts down on poop volume, will cut into their profits from projected material sales, and probably not worthwhile(from BL's point of view)☺️.
