Kai wants revenge on Damon and Bonnie . Knowing that Damon cares about Elena, he cursed her , bonding her life to the life of Bonnie.
Both friends wont be able to co-exist at the same time.
Everyone seems to know what Damon's decision will be : knowing which girl he will save.
The decision being too twisted, Bonnie decides to confront & fight Kai, knowing the risks.
What nobody knows: Bonnie and Damon have reached a new kind of connection ; Bonnie cares deeply for Damon and wants his happiness, even it meaning for her to give her life for it.
Their connection has become this strong , that Damon senses that something is wrong, as he is able to speak to Elena.
Much to Kai's suprise , Damon comes looking for Bonnie. Damon is taken off guard seeing her hurt. He cares more for Bonnie than expected.
Kai should never have harmed the witch ,as this is unleashing Damon's rage, and he kills Kai.
Kai's death unfortunately did not lift the curse, and Damon is inconsolable about Bonnie's death.
