The UK government has announced plans for what it says is a “green industrial revolution” - in order to deliver the UK target of net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
From 2030 the sale of new diesel-only and petrol-only cars will be banned, a decade earlier than originally planned.
There will be more money for new nuclear power, including 16 mini nuclear plants.
There’s a target to replace 600,000 gas boilers a year by 2028 by installing low-energy heat pumps.
The UK government has committed £4 billion to the plan - and hopes 250,000 new jobs will be created in the green sector.
Huw Edwards presents BBC News at Ten reporting by business editor Simon Jack.

does the term non renewable not make much sense to people?? FOSSIL FUELS WILL RUN OUT, OR BECOME TOO EXPENSIVE TO EXTRACT, and when that happens if society isn't set up to deal with the sudden loss of fossil energy there will be a state of anarchy. This legislation makes sense, it forces manufacturers and industry and the economy as a whole to adapt to a future that will inevitably come. Our society is so heavily dependant on fossil fuels that when the supply does run out, due to depletion of resources, then what will we do, revert back to a medieval existence and raise pigs for a living?

@@stevetaylor2818 You make it sound as if 1.3m is a lot of cars compared to the global scale of things, majority of those cars are exported to the EU (54.8%) followed by US (18.9%) then China (5.4%) -- the rest are negligible. Also I think you misunderstood me, WE as a nation don't make BRITISH made cars, the cars we do produce are from OTHER companies worldwide e.g. Toyota, Nissan, Lotus, Honda, Rolls Royce...along with former British brands that are now owned by India (Tata Motors): Land Rover and Jaguar. We only have Aston Martin and the MINI. Only 1m of the 1.3m is shipped worldwide and over 50% of these exports were to the EU. Just for reference, Telsa makes 600,000 cars annually alone! ONE company has half of the UK's global sales...just shows what a behemoth Tesla have become. Let's not forget this is currently only state side, EVs are not as popular over here and in Europe. Once Elon Musk pushes for it here...he would probably be doing 4x those figures due to the demand. As Boris steers us into that direction by 2030, naturally the two will cross paths and a trade deal will be made. We are basically the Detroit, Michigan of the motoring world where we just make other peoples cars but don't push anything of our own, that's the only way we are generating money from this market to keep us relevant, otherwise we lose our relevancy in this field. The EV space is going to be crowded in the next few years, China are very bullish in this front and I swear there's a new EV company coming out every 5 mins over there...The term "Made in China" used to come with negative connotations around it as anything made in China was regarded as cheap and of low quality and would break within a few days of use, but times have changed as they slowly try to become a global super power, they've had a massive growth spurt in their economy and this pandemic slowly makes you realize how reliant the US and the rest of the world, depend on their manufacturing goods. China has all the "economical chips" in their hand and we were literally mucking away hands on yolo moves giving them all the chips, NOW they currently have the biggest chip lead (if you follow my poker reference). Which is all good and dandy for them, but we are literally being outclassed on the global scale of things, instead of developing here, we fuck off to other countries and make them richer. Meanwhile, we are raising taxes in this country and we will now have this stupid "Pay As You Go" mileage system for cars that will tax us even further...soon we'll need to pay tax to breath in this country...We need to fix our economy before pretending we are "world leaders" of this "green movement". California already beat us to that, other countries will follow...we JUST need to stop pretending and get real.

If people want to pollute the environment with their cars (and even electric cars largely just transfer their pollution to the power station) then the least they should expect is to pay through the nose for the privilege. Either you care about global warming or you don't, making excuses just isn't good enough. Any cost we pay now for public transport, electric car subsidies, new nuclear power stations etc will ultimately be insignificant compared to the damage caused by climate change. There is already nothing we can do about the fact that the north pole will be ice free in 15 years, large parts of the world will become to hot to be habitable sending millions or billions of migrants north and an unknown number of animal species will become extinct due to habitat destruction, many of which will forever remain undiscovered. Desperate times call for desperate measures. Get rid of cars and put everyone on busses and charge them a fortune to boot. People will suddenly decide maybe they didn't really need to make that journey after all. 99% of people are simply profligate wasters of money and energy because they're stupid, selfish and care about nobody but themselves and their own petty little wants. Not that I blame them but make the cost of things reflect the cost of the damage they do to the environment and people will make better choices. Money is the only reliable measure of damage. Tax cars off the road I say.

I heard one nob stating that the price of electric vehicles has come down & it will be possible to purchase an electric vehicle for £20, 000 or so. What a comedian! There are lots of people that will not be able to afford a £20,000 car in their lifetime. Used electric vehicles at a reasonable price could take many, many years to come to the market. What is not mentioned is the paucity of RAPID chargers throughout the UK to combat "Range Anxiety." Recent BBC2 programme showed that it is not unusual to follow your charging app. directions to a site only to find the machine is broken or that only the slow charging 7kw units are available -so forget having a cup of tea whilst your EV is charging, - you might have to book an overnight room instead. Until you can charge your EV as readily ( and almost as quickly) as a visit to the many fuel stations that line your route to your destination, your are tied to your local area to avoid said 'Range anxiety.' Hopefully this situation may improve when Govt. and manufacturers realise that relying on private electrical suppliers is not the only option. I might be wrong but doesn't Tesla build their own charging sites and include 'Rapid Chargers?) The Shell stations, at least , had a rapid charger.Will their be enough chargers ( RAPID) for flat and terrace house dwellers?How will Govt. recoup the lost tax income - well they could partner suppliers or lease/own their own charging sites? Lastly, maybe Hydrogen fuel will be the fuel of the future re- rapid filling etc.

Look, as lofty a goal as that is, electric cars are not going to be affordable for working class people by 2030, nor are those cars going to be feasible for people living in rural areas. Until both of those requirements are met, fossil fuel cars are a necessity. Furthermore, pollution from personal vehicles are a tiny, tiny amount of the Co2 produced and concentrating on those figures isn't going to help. More attention should be paid to industries like farming, aviation and infrastructure.
@iann23

Why would you need a car? There will be government controlled transport. You won't even need to work, the government will give you food and a nice tiny box house. In fact, if you believe the WEF, you won't own anything. And you'll be happy because they told you so.
@stevetaylor2818
@stevetaylor2818 3 года назад
Electric cars are more feasible for people living in rural areas as a lot higher percentage have off-road parking and can charge overnight. And Electric cars are already cheaper to own over the life of a car, as so much cheaper to run and service, by 2030 electric cars will also be cheaper to buy as so much simpler to manufacture. If you still can't afford a new car then just buy a second-hand car, either an electric or a cheap second-hand ICE car. It's only new ICE cars that are being banned, there will be many cheap secondhand cars around for many years.

There seems to be quite a few people who don’t understand what this means. They’re not banning petrol or petrol cars. In 2030 they’re banning the production of NEW petrol cars. So you can still use whatever you buy before 2030, and continue to use it after 2030 with no problem at all. Eventually, you will have to buy hybrid or electrical. But that’s not until you make that choice. Hope that cleared it up for you. 🙂

The issue is that the world economic forum has been talking about a great reset. 'Conspiracy theorists' have been talking about how this all ties in with some 'agenda 2030' which lines up perfectly with this video telling us our right to buy petrol will be taken away.
@rib_rob_personal
@rib_rob_personal 3 года назад
@@ott1186 The right isn’t going away, it’s just becoming less available. If you can find it, you’ll probably be allowed to purchase it. The world has gone through a few different power source transitions in the past. We used to use coal for heat. We used to use whale oil for indoor lighting. We used to use diesel for most motors. Petrol is just adding to the list of power sources we’re moving on from. The world wasn’t majorly changed when we transitioned through the old ones and it still won’t majorly change as we transition to greener energy.

@@rib_rob_personal Lol we still use coal to heat out homes, just not directly. Coal energy ends up in electric cars. Also, never before in the history of mankind, has this transition happened through force rather than the free market. You can actually still buy coal to burn in a hearth. The thing that should worry is you is the lack of freedom. Whether it's right or wrong or if banning so much plastic would be more beneficial to our environment (it would), it's a removal of freedoms. What the World Economic Forum tells us is that 'we will own nothing', so how could I buy anything? What if I just like petrol cars and want to make and sell them? How could you say I am not allowed, but Apple is allowed to through tons of plastic and lithium waste into the ocean? Not allowed? You think this is the correct approach? You don't see the danger of this way of doing things? Why is the local fruit shop which has max 3-5 people at one time not allowed to open because lockdown, but the supermarket which puts people together from all over town is? Stop believing the government so blindly.

Depending on the source it looks like Electric cars produce about the same level of pollution as a petrol car doing 60-80 miles per gallon would, by the time you take into account the dramatically increased pollution during the creation of electric vehicles when compared to internal combustion engine vehicles. The solution is simple, instead of banning petrol cars insist on at least 70 miles per gallon from "new" petrol cars after 2030 (or even 2025), and make it illegal to sell new cars in the UK that cannot do that milage with possible exceptions for legitimate need, (e.g. a farmer may be able to satisfactorily justify why he needs a Landrover, but someone living in an urban area who uses it for shopping and running the kids to school most certainly cannot), there are already several cars able to get milage in that range, so it is not an unrealistic solution, and if we could hit 90-100mpg (again some cars are not far off) a petrol car would be lower pollution than an electric car.

Will never work! Imagine a consumer has to choose from: A cut down car, skinny slow corning tires, small noisy engine, no power steering, no air-con, no powerful stereo, or electric heated seats windows etc, 0 to 60 in 30 seconds, top speed 50 mph (to get 100 miles per gallon) large regular service cost, an engine that is only 20% efficient and still burns diminishing fossil fuels polluting our cities and the environment. Or a Tesla, 140 equivalent miles to the gallon, 0 to 60 in 3 seconds, 100 mph+ top speed, 1/4 the running cost per mile and a faction of the service cost, quiet 80% efficient engine, every luxury you can imagine and desire, fully recyclable battery, and can even be fueled from your own free solar, or from the UK grid which is fast becoming renewable (currently 40% and 18% nuclear and planned to be mainly non-fossil fuel by the 2030s) I think electric will win! Plus the additional environmental cost of constructing electric cars is being addressed with simpler battery construction, long-life reusable batteries and recyclable batteries, plus electric motors are so much simpler to build than a combustion engine (1000 parts compared with 10,000), and the cost is rapidly diminishing, so by 2030 electric will be a no brainer! People won't need persuading to go electric they will want EV's The initiative is not to persuade people, but to get the car industry to make enough EVs that the people will be desiring!

The grid only runs anywhere near maximum for around 3 hours per day, most the day is running at half capacity. Yes if all car owners plugged their cars in at exactly the same time the grid would not coup, but that would not happen in the same way we cant all fill our petrol cars at the same time. In reality, we will all want to charge our cars the cheapest way possible (overnight, day time sunny days etc. and plugged in cars will auto charge when cheap. and cheap is when there is plenty of supply, and if you have a 300 mile EV and only drive 50 miles a day, then the car could auto-charge on windy sunny days (cheap day) helping to balance the grid. Or you would choose cheap days to charge (the same way some fuel stations sometimes do deals on a day of the week) and yes a percentage of cars on long journeys will need quick charge now! Plus the Uk is installing massive amounts of new renewable energy but not current decommissioning many fossil fuels power stations so are in fact gaining capacity rapidly

They haven't thought this through, there is no way they will be able to charge enough extra tax to cover the loss of fuel duty and vat. The economy collapses as a result. The cost of fitting all these charging point is not that green, only the rich will be able to afford cars and the economy collapses bigtime. Are you going to want to pay 50p per mile to drive your 'cheap' electric car? This will be so funny to see their green policy fail.
@johnkeepin7527
@johnkeepin7527 3 года назад
Hmm, it would be quite easy to ramp up the tax on power used to charge a car if they wanted to, so as to compensate for the loss of excise duty + VAT on fuel. Most of the devices used could report the energy used via a third party (everything’s via a ‘third party’ under this regime) and charge it from your bank account. For the time being, they are actually increasing the tax rate per unit energy on fuel soon, when E10 petrol becomes the norm; the energy content will be less, but the excise duty per litre will stay as it is.
