Agreed re: the incredible quality & number/expanse of the artists from Band Aid but for me, the Goss twins (BROS) & Jason Donovan & Kylie alone in Band Aid II made this far more pretty than the OG group...

I think it's a travesty. It undermines the whole purpose. With the original it was done so organically and on a whim. As a by-product, everyone's profile went through the roof...but that was never the goal. With this one, I feel philanthropy took a backseat...

In 1989 alone they had written/produced 6 number 1 singles by 4 different artists, written and produced the year’s highest selling album, Jason Donovan’s “Ten Good Reasons” and single handily revived Donna Summer’s failing career- returning her into the UK and US Top 10 charts from which she had long been absent. It was clear who Geldoff would turn to in order to deliver this next incarnation of Band Aid. Stock Aitken Waterman. This was organised and recorded in the shortest amount of time than any of the other versions. There was less calculation in this production and those who participated did so with their very best intentions.

Yeah, although I've never really been much of a fan of pop music, I recall that I quite liked this version (as an Aussie, I was rapt that Kylie & Jason Donovan prominently featured in it) at the time...my God, I forgot until now just how damn pretty the twins (Matt & Luke) from the pop band BROS were!!

⁠@@disneydanny2Weird? In what way? After the 1984 original, this 1989 remake is the next best version. 1988/89 was the year of PWL and SAW and Band Aid II was the sound of 1989 personified. The single was a massive success, becoming the UK’s 9th highest selling single of that year. The 2004 and 2014 versions don’t hold a torch to the originality of the 1984 and 1989 versions. Also, if we are to talk about “weird”, the gold star for that goes to 2004’s Band Aid 20, with Dizze Rascal’s cringey rap being shoehorned in.

Agree of all of the remakes to this song, this is the best of the remakes. 2004 and the version from Daddy's home is great as well. The worst ones are the 2003 and the 2014 version should be erased.

Bhatia … In 1984. a few months before this song was recorded, Queen had played in South Africa in Suncity not knowing, or not worrying that there was a white-only audience. This caused accusations of racism agains them and therefore they were not called to participate in this song. Then the controversy ended and Queen were invited to Live Aid 1985 and Freddie made the best live performance in the history of rock

You know that you are old when you can remember when Cliff RIchard was in his forties (at the time of this song, he was a sprightly 49 year old).

Both Cliff Richard and Kylie Minogue are famous and have had long term success. I think Both are still involved with tours etc however I don't think Cliff has had no 1 albums recently.

You are right the they will never make one that will beat the original version.. Got to keep the drums in the song. But this was a good one..

It was number one… in December 1989. In fact, at the time, it sold more copies than the original 1984 version, which inspired it.

@@suzettebakelaar Because most of the top acts produced in 1989, were produced by Stock Aitken Waterman. It therefore stands to reason that most of the top acts who featured on the 1989 update of Do They Know It’s Christmas, had an affiliation with Stock Aitken Waterman.

This is an excellent version in my opinion, the only truly pop version.
