My best friend bought the 45 of Caught Up In You back when it was released. We were two crazy kids living in a rural Texas cow-town and this song had such a huge sound and awesome melody that I was hooked immediately. He would sing and I would play air guitar and we would magically be transported to a better place. He was killed by a drunk driver just 3.5 years later. Whenever I hear this song I turn it up, sing along, and am now transported back in time to a very happy place. Here’s to you, my brother, Cary Osman - gone but never forgotten. 😢

During the holiday season of 2005, my mother gave me a copy of *Ultimate Survivor.* I was blown away that it closed with the Survivor rendition of "Rockin' into the Night", a definitive rarity. It was originally recorded for the *Survivor* debut and left on the cutting room floor. When 38 Special grabbed it up, it was like a classic banana peel move that opened up the door to the writing of "Hold On Loosely" and "Caught Up in You". Historically, it was unprecedented for Chicago-based Survivor and a southern rock act like 38 Special to have anything to do with each other.

Adam, I’m so happy you covered my very favorite rock band, .38 Special! While I would have to say that Sweet Home Alabama is the greatest southern rock song of the rock era, and in the top 5 of all time rock songs, Hold on Loosely still gives me goose bumps every time I hear it, even now, 40+ years after it’s release. I was a HS senior when it was released and it was ‘my’ song for the crush I had for a girl from another HS whom I was so caught up in. She proved so elusive over the next few years that the line from Hold On Loosely- “if you cling too tightly, you’re gonna loose control,” was a taunt to me. Turned out that my girl wasn’t so into guys. She thought I was cute, wanted to see if it could work, but she was swinging for the other team, as it turns out, if you know what I mean. My brother, our roommate and I were all from the NYC area but we loved everything that .38 Special did, whether it was ‘Chain Lightning’ or ‘Second Chance.’ We saw the band three times in the 80’s and I just saw them last year for a fourth time. I’ve shared my love for Don Barnes and the band with my second wife and she end=joys them almost as much as I do, but when I hear ‘Hold On Loosely,’ it instantly takes me back to my teenage years and the unrequited love that never could be.

I lived in the South from 70 to 80. Southern rock was all we listened to, either on the radio or albums. The list of bands is long. At the top of the list was Skynyrd. Now I remember at the time 38 Special came out, we all thought they were the new kids playing more pop sounding stuff than what we were used to. Then we found out Donnie Van Zant was in the band and we thought they were riding Skynyrds coat tails. Now years later I bought their greatest video hits and then their Live at Sturgis DVD's and now I really like them. Strange, I couldn't stand 'em back then and love them now. Never too late. The Beatles, and the Stones were always fawned over, with lots of admiration and plenty of stories, public and private. But a lot of popular bands that worked hard and made it on the air waves, were a commodity for the record companies, and we never heard "their story". Till now. So thnx for that !

Can you imagine being 16 in the early 80's, you've been playing guitar a while, and now on to learning to play the top songs on the radio for your first band? That was me. Talk about being in heaven. 38 Special was one of my favorite bands to play. Just the way the guitars are layered, the vocals I mean what kid didn't love them in the hay day? By the way, being a kid in the late 70's and through the 80's we had the best music in the world EVER!! There will never be a time like that again. Turn on the radio and you hear Frankenstein for the first time, or the day Sweet Home Alabama came out the speaker for the first time? Or todays song comes blasting through the air. What a time to be alive, and even better what a time to be a budding musician. Well here we are all this time later and I can tell you that I still love to play those songs. Thanks Don, Jeff, Jim! Being from Jacksonville we were spoiled by Skynyrd, 38 Special, Molly Hatchet, Blackfoot, Allman Bros., Limp Biscuit. I partied with a members from the different bands a few times. A good friend of mine dated Carol Barnes (Don's ex-wife for a time) but Billy Powell was my favorite.

I love southern rock. Allmans, Skynyrd, Outlaws, BOA, ARS, Little Feat etc. love it! .38 Special holds a special place in my heart. They were my first concert. Early 90s at the After Deck in Myrtle Beach. I won the tickets from the radio station. Jeff Carlisi and Don Barnes are fantastic players. Don and Ronnie are fantastic singers. Larry Junstrom was a founding member of Skynyrd. Brookins and Grondin are my favorite dual drummers after Kreutzmann and Hart. Great episode Adam!

I have seen 38 special over 40 tomes since 1982. From the days with 2 drummers to the current lineup they still bring it. Excellent live band. I met the band several times over yhe years. All very nice guys. I proposed to my wife with So Caught Up in you back in 1988. Still married 35 years later. Cannot wait to see them for their 50th year in 2024.

I saw 38 special in October, and they killed it!!! Still sounding great. Jeff has been retired for a bit and Don is handling the lead guitar duty. Jerry Riggs who had a couple of rockers on the Heavy Metal soundtrack is taking care of the rhythm guitar. The show was one of the best I’ve ever seen. Don Barnes is still the Man!. I have been a huge fan since Wild eyes southern boys came out and the release of Fantasy Girl. I wasn’t a big fan of the album without Don on the vocals. When I think of 38 special, It has to be Don’s vocals and Jeff’s solos. He has to be one of the most underrated guitarists ever, but his solos were always well structured and clean. You’ll have to excuse me while I go listen to my old CD’s now 😎

Excellent job,, I love going down All these roads with you,, some curious,,all fantastic. Thanks I'm turning 54 in Feb and some bands like 38 came around thru much,,, and radio,, we had it all my age to your age. So we need an old soul, I look young for my age,but hung out with older people,, so I'm similar at your age,, feel what I'm saying. That's much music. So till the next one 🇨🇦☮️🛀

When Rockin' into the Night came out in 1979, I was a sophomore in high school. I bought the 8 track :) and wore that thing out in my 1970 Chevy Nova. To this day, when it comes on the radio it puts me right back in that car leaving for town to drag Main and hang out with my friends. One of my core high school memories songs.

Amazing band... and a GREAT bunch of guys too. I had the distinct honor of running into the band in a hotel bar in Indianapolis around 1996. We had some beers and talked for a few hours, and by the end of the night, they made me feel like I was one of their best friends. The next night, I was in the 2nd row at their show and they made sure to gesture to me, again like they were seeing an old friend in the crowd. Just amazing people, and one of my favorite bands of all time!!!

Another fantastic interview. Nice work. Peterik and Barnes were both so compelling. Hearing them talk about creating those songs gave a real feeling of the pressure these guys were under to produce quality material over and over. And they did. I've loved 38 special since I first heard them in the 80s. Well crafted tunes and that warm southern rock sound. I do wonder, though, does Don sing Second Chance live?

Thanks for doing one of my all-time favorites, "Caught Up In You." As always you told an amazing story and I learned to appreciate Jim Peterik of Survivor just that much more. As for the song, "Second Chance", I never realized it was 38 Special. Learn something new every day. Keep up the great storytelling about these great bands and their phenomenal hits. Best...

Those two songs have great staying power because of great combination of cool chords, strong vocals, harmony vocals and guitar solos. I agree that if the bridge is good enough, bring it back! Brings back great memories of music in '81 and '82 with REO Speedwagon, Journey and Styx and Asia.
