Snarky Puppy is a collective of sorts with as many as 25 members in regular rotation. They each maintain busy schedules as sidemen (with such artists as Erykah Badu, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, and D’Angelo), producers (for Kirk Franklin, David Crosby, and Salif Keïta), and solo artists (many of whom are on the band’s indy label, GroundUP Music).
The band was formed by bassist and primary composer Michael League in 2003, starting inconspicuously enough as a group of college friends at the University of North Texas’ Jazz Studies program. Three years later, a serendipitous intersection with the Dallas gospel and R&B community in Dallas transformed the music into something funkier, more direct, and more visceral. It was at this time that the group absorbed musicians like Robert “Sput” Searight (drums), Shaun Martin (keyboards), and Bobby Sparks (keyboards), and were heavily influenced by legendary keyboardist Bernard Wright (Miles Davis, Chaka Khan, Marcus Miller).
Written, arranged, and produced by Michael League.
Personnel:
Michael League - bass
Shaun Martin - keyboards
Bill Laurance - Fender Rhodes
Cory Henry - keyboards
Justin Stanton - trumpet (solo)
Mark Lettieri - guitar
Bob Lanzetti - guitar
Chris McQueen - guitar
Nate Werth - percussion
Larnell Lewis - drums
Mike Maher - trumpet
Chris Bullock - sax
Bob Reynolds - sax
Jay Jennings - trumpet
Yannick Hiwat - violin
Tessel Hersbach - violin
Mara Tieles - viola
Susanne Rosmolen - cello
Engineered by Eric Hartman, Roy Van Rosendaal, Mike Harrison, & Colin Benders.
Filmed by Andy LaViolette, Brad Holt, Emily Schwarting, Joseph Lafond, and Christi LaViolette.
Mixed by Eric Hartman in Dallas, Texas.
Mastered by Scott Hull at Masterdisk New York, NY.

I've seen this many times and performed live, it's become sort of an anthem for them. Always had a thing for the cello player.

7:37 that really speaks to the mastery of Nate Werth imo (and good mixing). Larnell is primarily doing tom fills with kick bass but Nate's insane percussion slides in so well that it feels like one person. To me this song is a percussionist masterclass and really highlights how having a great percussionist can take a song to a whole other level

First time watching you, Bob, and you are epically awesome! Your reactions are the absolute best! I adore Snarky Puppy. They are truly something extremely special and remarkable. Their song, Lingus, typically moves me to tears because of how utterly extraordinary it is. I am a very happy new subscriber of yours! 😊👍😊

You should definitely check out their whole Sylva concert. Snarky Puppy and Metropole Orkest get together to make some fantastic music. The Curtain specifically left me completely awed when I heard it for the first time... still does, to be honest.

The soloist on trumpet was Justin Stanton who also is a featured keyboardist. These guys are ALL extremely talented musicians but when you get a chance go back and listen to percussionist Nate Werth and how he is literally locked in with Larnell Lewis' drumming. He compliments every rhythmic and instrument choice Larnell makes; listen for yourself. Thanks for the reaction video. Snarky Puppy is one of my all-time favorite groups.

Man I am loving the musicianship these guys have. They are clearly one of thr most talented groups around. I’ve got to see them live when they come around. I missed seeing Bob Reynolds back in 2020. He was supposed to be at Slippery Rock for the Jazz Festival that my son was playing in with his high School Jazz Band. It would have been nice to see him. Thanks for watching!

@Bob Cieslinski as others have said, their live shows are TOTALLY DIFFERENT from their album performances. I have seen them live twice during the Culcha Vulcha and Immigrance tours. The lineup was different each time as were the performances. Great performances for sure... but much different than the album. Worth every penny though! Thanks again for the review/reaction videos. 👍

As amazing as Larnell is, 7:33 really showcases how Nate Werth (percussion) sneakily adds to what Larnell is doing.

As a former trumpet player, I love when he does the little trumpet wah sound at 4:35 by not fully pressing down on the valve. It's so slick

One of my very faves - you are once again weaving through the back recesses of my mind. You mention the trumpet soloist half-valving. I incidentally do this on saxophone. Takes a lot of breath support to sound good (I don't always haha). But fun certainly to have that deep 'scooping up' effect, moreso than can be done simply with embochure.

It still is incalculable to me that Larnell learned this album ON THE FLIGHT OVER. I’ve seen SP more than once live and this track is either their closer or in the encore. My intro to SP was “Don’t You Know” featuring wunderkind Jacob Collier from Family Dinner Vol. 2. If you really want to see Nate Worth in his element, check out “Alma”, one of their first video performances
