Official video for Outlier by Snarky Puppy: • Snarky Puppy - Outlier...
Snarky Puppy is a collective of sorts with as many as 25 members in regular rotation. They each maintain busy schedules as sidemen (with such artists as Erykah Badu, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, and D’Angelo), producers (for Kirk Franklin, David Crosby, and Salif Keïta), and solo artists (many of whom are on the band’s indy label, GroundUP Music).
The band was formed by bassist and primary composer Michael League in 2003, starting inconspicuously enough as a group of college friends at the University of North Texas’ Jazz Studies program. Three years later, a serendipitous intersection with the Dallas gospel and R&B community in Dallas transformed the music into something funkier, more direct, and more visceral. It was at this time that the group absorbed musicians like Robert “Sput” Searight (drums), Shaun Martin (keyboards), and Bobby Sparks (keyboards), and were heavily influenced by legendary keyboardist Bernard Wright (Miles Davis, Chaka Khan, Marcus Miller).
Written and arranged by Justin Stanton.
Produced by Michael League.
Personnel:
Michael League - Moog keybass
Shaun Martin - keyboards
Bill Laurance - piano
Cory Henry - keyboards
Justin Stanton - Fender Rhodes
Mark Lettieri - guitar
Bob Lanzetti - guitar
Chris McQueen - guitar
Nate Werth - percussion
Larnell Lewis - drums
Mike Maher - trumpet
Chris Bullock - sax
Bob Reynolds - sax (solo)
Jay Jennings - trumpet
Engineered by Eric Hartman, Roy Van Rosendaal, Mike Harrison, & Colin Benders.
Filmed by Andy LaViolette, Brad Holt, Emily Schwarting, Joseph Lafond, and Christi LaViolette.
Mixed by Eric Hartman in Dallas, Texas.
Mastered by Scott Hull at Masterdisk New York, NY.

That transition Larnell makes into a groove during Bob's solo is one of my favorite things.

Both of those guys are beasts. I was fortunate enough to get into Bob’s online sax studio. The guys really knows his theory and how to work on the little things to make your playing great. I learned a lot from him.

The trumpet section is one of the best I've ever heard. They're all great. I would be so proud to play ith this group. I know Michael graduated from the One O'clock Jazz Band at North Texas State.Jim Hester

This is my favorite song of all time. It hits all the points for me. Then you factor in a live recording, and it sounds perfectly mixed.... come on!

I love all the other songs on this album but this one was the one that truly blew my mind because it does things that he would totally not expect it to do.

Bob Reynolds again and again touts Chris Potter as being somehow waaay superior to any other tenor player, but this is only one of numerous Reynolds soli that are in a class with Potter's best efforts... Both Reynolds and Chris Bullock are killer tenor players... Also, in line with what you said about the monster soloist and the "other supporting players"... There really are no "Others"... ALL of the members of Snarky Puppy are monster soloists, and they ALL slip into the supporting background when not soloing... That's what makes this band so great...

So true Michael! What a joy to listen to a band like this. It’s a very cool thing that they are willing to take a step back and just be humble and grateful to be in this group.

As sax players, we know he's just riffing on a minor pentatonic, but still... he does a killer job with it. And the parallel thirds around the 9:40 mark reminds me a lot of Cowboy Bebop's soundtrack horn arrangements (Specifically the song "Autumn In Ganymede" performed by Yoko Kanno's group The Seatbelts).

I strongly recommend reacting to their album Sylva, that they did together with the Metropole Orkest. It's like Snarky Puppy but with an even mightier sound.

Great reaction vid, always enjoy your reviews. This is one of my favorites from Snarky Puppy. I would like to throw out a recommendation for you to review "Metropolis" by The Lao Tizer Band - some groovin' horn, guitar, and piano licks in that one. Keep the reactions coming!

still got the weird delay going. First 18 seconds are fine, but once you have the earbuds in your voice goes chorus and it's hard to listen to the song with a chorus effect happening :-)

Ok I know what you are talking about Miff. You’ve got a great ear. No one else is telling me about this. In order for the videos and audios to line up they have to have something to lineup to. I think the background in the one channel is bleeding into the mix very slightly. I can’t promise I can’t filter that completely out. It’s the way I’m lining everything up. There needs to be something to lineup everythjng. Any ideas for a fix? Thanks for catching this.
@miff227
@miff227 2 года назад
@@bobcieslinski I'd love to help with a fix, but I've never done video, only ever done audio stuff. I see loads of reactors with AV sync issues so I do understand it's a real problem to solve, and I guess they just don't whereas you're trying a method, so I can only really commend you on the effort there and hope you find a fix.
