This whole album is amazing!! I remember my father bringing this home and listening to it over and over at 7 years old, finally gonna see him live in April with the Doobie brothers
ROBIN TROWER - " Day Of The Eagle" 1970s Rock / Blues, this is also a bluesy guitar masterpiece ooh! and that bass & drums are phenomenal, it's a super groovy song
Love Robert Cray.... a few more suggestions.. Right Next Door, Smoking Gun, Bad Influence, Foul Play, Still Around. His guitar playing is unreal, probably the cleanest smoothest guitar I've heard.
Robert and I graduated from high school together. Somehow he was able to get Albert Collins to play at our graduation party. His bass player is Richard Cousins who went to a rival high school in our home town. If you look close, you'll see Robert playing bass in the band in the movie Animal House. Robert was playing at a night club in Salem, OR and John Belushi came in to listen to him and got him the part in the movie.
Good reaction you guys, I, for one, have tremendous respect for the blues genre. For me, that's where it all started, where it be rock, soul or R&B. It's root music, gotta love it, cheers.
I purchased Robert Cray’s first album “Who’s Been Talkin’”in Tower Records on Sunset Strip in 1980, and followed him ever since. Wonderful guitarist with a unique sound and a very soulful voice. My dental hygienist was actually playing a Robert Cray album in her facility when I was having check up a couple of weeks ago. I couldn’t believe it, turned out she is a mega fan of the blues.
Robert Cray is a Blues Master. For many years he hung out with Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmy Vaughan. He was with the boys playing cards on the night of Stevie Ray Vaughan's crash. He played with Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Jimmy Vaughan, and B.B.King at the Crossroads concerts. If you ever watch him play take note of the guys hands
I adore Robert Cray!!!! His guitar work is excellent, and oh his bluesy sound! Right Next Door, Smokin Gun, Foul Play, Guess I Showed Her, Nothin But A woman, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark are my suggestions!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤. Really fun fact, Robert Cray was in the band Otis Day and The Nights in the movie National Lampoon's Animal House! Iconic songs of Shout and Shama Lama Ding Dong! 😁😁😁😁😁
If you like solid blues guitar find the album "Showdown" (it's probably here on YT). It features Robert, Albert "Ice Man" Collins and Johnny Copeland. Every track is solid.
Love Robert. He was born in Georgia but eventually moved to the great northwest, Tacoma Washington. I was in college on Oregon in the 80s, and he and his band did the I-5 concert circuit....up and down the west playing in college towns year after year. We'd get to see him 4 or 5 times a year - so many good times dancing to his music just feet away from him playing that wonderful guitar. Great memories!
He used to play regularly at a nightclub in Eureka, CA back in the early 80’s when I lived there. He only charged $5 a show so I thought he was just some unknown local guy and never made it there. Imagine how stupid I felt when I found out later how good he was.
Love Mr Cray. Have the great privilege of seeing him a number of times. For a beautiful slower love song, please give a listen to 'I Shiver'....great stuff.
I got to see Robert Cray once in Asbury Park, NJ. WNEW Memorial Day show on the beach. It started raining and he switched up and played a song called, "Playing in the Mud." I hated being in the rain, and I hate sand, but I didn't leave until he was done. A great player. He pretty much sounds the same live. And don't forget, a young Robert was the bass player for Otis Day and the Knights in Animal House. I think he attended the school they were filming at.
I've seen Robert Cray Live as a Headliner several times , but to give you an idea of how respected he is among other blues artists , I've seen him open for Eric Clapton , who has covered a few of Roberts songs , ("Bad Influence" & "Old Love" to name 2 ) also Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble & the Legendary Buddy Guy . His catalogue of really great "back porch sippin whiskey" songs is extensive . Get to "Smoking Gun" , "Right Next Door" , "Don't be Afraid of the Dark" "Nothing But a Woman" , "Bad Influence" , "I Believe I've Slipped Her Mind" , "Our Last Time", "Foul Play" , yeah the list is long ...
I can't believe no-one told you to check out "I Guess I Showed Her"!! One of the best blues songs in the history of the PLANET!! And SOOOO funny!! Btw, Robert Cray is one of the greatest blues guitarists in generations.
For more earlier blues, check out John lee hooker - boogie chillen’, crawling king snake, boom boom, one bourbon, one scotch, one beer, I’m in the mood (solo or with bonnie raitt), dimples. He also did a song with robert cray called Mr. Lucky.
Another blues supergroup is Albert Collins, Robert Cray and Johnny Copland the album is called "Showdown" and the guitar work is epic on every track! The song "Blackjack" is especially a standout with the 3 axe men swapping licks for all of the songs length. You can probably find a clip here on YT.
Watching tonight made Clarence Carter pop into my head. Some great songs like Patches, Slip Away,Clarence Carter - You can't miss what you can't measure.
Thank you for getting back to Young Bob. Eric Clapton was big on him early and helped introduce him to the world. Just about ANY song from the Strong Persuader album works. Right next door, Smoking gun, Foul play are super easy on your ears and your hips
His song about losing his dad called He Don't Live here Anymore is really powerful and a song called The Forecast (calls for pain) and last a song about not running away from home called Back Home
Great reaction. Blues, rock, great voice and a darn good band gets you swaying to the beat! I'm going to see Robert Cray and his band perform next month in Charlottesville VA. It should be an awesome show.
Love Robert Cray. thanks for the reaction! May I suggest the modern day blues-soul-rock guitarist & vocalist - Gary Clark, Jr. and either his "When I'm Gone" or his cover of The Beatles "Come Together" to start. 💜
I hear so many songs and performers that I grew up with. You two take this growing family on so many wonderful memory trips.... But you also introduce us to a lot of voices, songs, and music many of us never heard of before. But I can't believe that in my 63 years, and eclectic musical journeys...that I have never heard this smooth, yet vibrant, Mr. Robert Cray!?!?!? Thanks for the intro! I gots me a new chillin in the backyard song for MY playlist!!!
I was there in the third row at Alpine Valley when he opened for Stevie Ray Vaughn and Eric Clapton. They really got us pumped up. Man what a show. Too bad the fog rolled in as heavy as it did. It was the last time anybody heard Stevie play.
I remember seeing Robert Cray in concert in Lowell MA in the late 80's and he still sounds as great now as he did back then. I like his band with that Memphis sound. Good stuff!
