1986: there's a reason why there's no drummer. Producer David Kahne replaced Debbi Peterson with a studio drummer to record the song, which infuriated the rest of the band. They had always considered themselves a self-contained unit. For years, in live performance, Debbi would not play drums on this one. Debbi also didn't sing on the song (she has the whistle on the bridge), with Vicki Peterson the first verse, Michael Steele the second and Susanna Hoffs the last. The band didn't work with Kahne again.
The drums could be done live, but a double kick pedal would be necessary to pull it off. Despite what Michael sang about liking the "punk and metal bands"(which often utilize such pedals), it doesn't seem like Debbi's style.
a) There was no "studio drummer" on the track; it's a drum machine. Anyone with ears can hear that. b) Debbi Peterson doesn't "whistle" on the track; it's a keyboard. Anyone with ears, etc.
Michael was really the hot one though. and the only one with previous experience with a band, The Runaways, hard to imagine her playing with Joan Jett and Lita Ford
Vocals were definitely live. So there was a drum machine. It was 1986 and it's how they did it. The Bangles rocked and were hott! There was no female live band better than them since. They played their own instuments and had to have others obviously help for some of the tracks live. So what? They kicked royal girl band ass while having their own to strut. Long live them.
@@jeffharder8706 The drum machine was added by the producer and Bangles kept it in for their live performances, Debbie (the drummer) would have been more than capable of playing this beat, she plays far harder than this in other songs. Vicki is a capable guitarist, but by no means great. Michael was by far the best female bassist since Tina Weymouth and possibly better. Hoff is reasonable but not too my taste. Put the four together, along with their male keyboard, they were a very good band.
Perry Staton The Go-Go’s were the number 1 all female band (early 80’s) that wrote all their music and played all their instruments without outside help. There are plenty of videos of them here on RU-vid.
@@JavierParede She seemed that way, but I think that she knew that all of them were nice looking and that was a way to distinguish herself from them too - look like the level headed one, the smart one.
did not know this until i watched six different versions of this... they always used a drum machine for this song... oh wwell oh and it easy to watch ten times... come on Suzanna Hoffs... cant ever get enough of her
Susan Thomas ( Mikki Steele) is VERY BEAUTIFUL! I have never seen a face of a woman from the past until now as beautiful as Susan's face! She is a MASTERPIECE of an artist and God. VERY BEAUTIFUL!!! THe MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMAN ON EARTH! Her voice is big and amazing! Beautiful....
Hey, David Boreanaz on keyboards. Yanosrsly, It's nice that OGWT actually showed their keyboardist. Hard to find any bands, today or back then, admitting that they're playing with backing keyboards.
The only embarrassing moment is at 1:54 when Debbi moves to the mic to do her fake whistling (throwing no shade at her - everyone has their presentation to do) and the director cuts to the keyboard player. Presumably no-one told the band which bits would and wouldn't be shown.
Egyptian is the most awkward of Bangles songs, due to how Debbi was omitted , sure it was a massive hit but it's a shade of the Bangles at their best ..... It's no Dover beach, Mary street or September gurls which is the band at their peerless best. I saw the Bangles in London with inxs as support , before different light came out, they were loud , fast and a damn good rock band...... Was a fudging great gig.....
They are rock n rollers. Love the bangles. Walk like an Egyptian is supposed to be a joke but not up to par with their best stuff. I do love Vicki's guitar in it though.
I read somewhere that the band actually hated this song. By using a drum machine, their producer was trying to sideline the drummer, who actually had nothing to do on this track at all.
You know, D. P. prolly dint likeit (how's that for teenspeak?), but it IS fun! I remember dancing like a fool when this song was young. Heck, we all were....
@@fredflintstone9657 I feel sorry for Debbi. She seems to have gone through a lot, not as hard as Michael, but she doesn't get the recognition she deserves. My poor sweet little Debbi. 😓
Have you ever felt like you’re unable to feel anything? You know exactly what this feeling is if you’ve been through it. The feeling of a meaningless life is unexplainable. A meaningless life may not look bad. In fact, there’s likely nothing obviously wrong. You may be living in your dream house with the love of your life. Your well-paid job in the company that you dreamt of is doing great, too. However, you feel like a part of your heart and soul are missing.
This song was the beginning of the end for The Bangles, a beloved hit, but you could see the cracks showing. Debbie whistles & jiggles a tambourine she doesn't drum, nobody does.
Ya baby Susanna Hoff in the movie The All Nighter , if you have never seen it. I highly recommend seeing, dumb as shit movie but seeing here in it makes it all worth it. Supper Swing Deluxe 😎
Any dumb blonde jokes from ignorant dudes, should be seen for the bs that they are after checking out this band of ladies jam. The blonde playing lead is cool by me and wow, she's a lady LOVE IT!!!~~~~~~
The song was recorded using a drum machine. Debbie Peterson has stated publicly that she did not play drums on the song when it was recorded and that it was the Producers choice to use a drum machine,
TheDarthHobbes is their a reason why the studio wanted to go with a drum machine instead of a real kit i mean it seems like any drummer could play it without any problems i do know she hated not playing a real kit
