In anticipation of Yooka Laylee, Did You know Gaming takes a look at some facts, secrets, and Easter eggs of the Banjo-Kazooie franchise. Banjo-Kazooie was created by Rare and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64 (N64). The game, along with it's sequel Banjo-Tooie was re-released for the Xbox 360, and later the Xbox One via Rare Replay. The series' platforming gameplay was revised for the third game in the series, Nuts and Bolts. Banjo-Kazooie's game play and design changed drastically compared to the its beta, and the game has possible connections to Donkey Kong 64.

Arkham Knight is good though, it's just that the PC port was garbage on release. PC performance is all people look for in videogames anymore. Arkham Knight expanded wonderfully on the mechanics ok Arkham City. Unless you're talking about Arkham Origins. Which I doubt you are - nobody even remembers that existed. And for good reason too, it's just a carbon copy of Arkham City.

The main problems with Nuts and Bolts are that the levels are pretty huge and pretty god damn empty, and you could literally replace the main characters with anyone and lose nothing. Fucking, Mario and Luigi could be building cars to stop Bowser from taking over the Mushroom Kingdom.

Well the levels are huge and empty because you need space to drive/fly around. It'd be pretty shit if you had to drive slowly and maneuver around tight corners in a vehicle sandbox game. As for your second "problem"... doesn't Yooka-Laylee show that you could just as easily replace Banjo and Kazooie in the N64 games too? I guess Kazooie is pretty redundant in Nuts & Bolts though, so point taken.

Well to that end aside from having some roads, most of the levels aren't easily traversed by car. Let's take the first level for example, the one with a crap ton of vertical space that has absolutely nothing in it, and the sea all around it, with absolutely nothing in it. Also what you described as a shit is the inside of the console level in the game. I'm not saying worlds can't be big, but when they're only big because you made your game a car racer, snd if you're going to do that make it so levels are fun to traverse by car. You'll immediately be flying everywhere once you can because it's so much easier. There's no point in exploring the levels since every objective is there on your mini map to find. I say the replacement bit due to the fact that Banjo and Kazooie are literally stripped of everything that made them. No powers, no moves, no abilities, just a car. You can put anyone in a car. Also I didn't mean just replacing them with their equivalent but just different looks, I meant like an actual different character. Like Jontron said, it could have been Tiptup's Nuts and Bolts and it wouldn't have been any different because none of Banjo and Kazooies original character moves or abilities were there.

Elyk Tsorb You don't have flying parts for the first level so it makes perfect sense for it to be mostly flat. The water around the edges acts as a natural barrier as well as being a sandbox for water vehicles if the player wants to mess around with those parts. It's a decently designed first level - not great, but definitely not horrible. Again, the L.O.G. Box level is, from memory, where you first get flying parts (propellers) so it makes sense to introduce verticality in that way. The level is designed for slow, helicopter-type vehicles. Then there's the more open Jiggoseum when you get high-powered parts and can let loose. So you see, the levels are designed to fit the kinds of vehicles the player will most likely be using. As for the character replacement, yes I agree with you.

I love the leap of logic Rare took concerning Edison's design; Scrapping him because he didn't match the more "mature" world the developers were crafting for Dream, yet deciding to replace him with an arguably more cartoonish character in the form of a hip anthropomorphic animal character(bear) who skateboards and wears only a tee/shorts and a backpack...

This was my favorite game as a child and if Rare made a true successor it would make my adult life. My children will grow up playing the classics from (S)NES, 64, etc and show appreciation for how revolutinary it was. Never forget where you come from and who helped you get where you are now.

Nuts and Bolts would have been a decent standalone game. Shoehorning B&K into the title alienated both folks who might have been interested in the core concept of Nuts and Bolts AND Banjo-Kazooie fans who would be disappointed by a Banjo-Kazooie game that wasn't a Banjo Kazooie game. They literally ensured that the game wouldn't have any appeal to any significant demographic.

Kamron Edwards I'll agree with you about losing your notes on Banjo Kazooie but Banjo Tooie required a lot of level backtracking and the levels weren't as good, but it had some great RARE easter egg throwbacks like saberman.

I Disagree, I grew up with Tooie and only just recently beat Kazooie. There are warps everywhere, which makes back tracking better than the first game, also you backtrack more often so you are more used to it, than in the first game, where you back track once, and it was annoying. Also I disagree with the worse levels. I love all the levels in Banjo Tooie, and especially the later ones like Hailfire Peaks, where as in in Kazooie, I only really like the Mumbo's Mountain, Treasure Trove Cove, Freezezzy Peak. Gobi's Valley, and Maybe Bubble Gloop Swamp. And Don't get me started on Rusty Bucket Bay, please. Also the fact that you lost your notes after death made the levels worse (especially Rusty Bucket Bay)It Probably is better on the Xbox though, If only I had other reason to get it, other than Rare Replay. Anyway this is just personal preference, and i respect your opinion, I'm just giving mine to defend one of my favourite games of all time.(Also it may just be nostalgia, but i can't really find any problems to Banjo Tooie other than maybe the frame rate, but it doesn't bother me.)

Most of the original team of Rare has gone to Playtonic Games, but Gregg Mayles is still part of Rare, and he doesn't seem like he's going to be leaving for a while. Also I don't like to see Playtonic and Rare as enemies. Steve Mayles works at Playtonic, but he's the brother of Gregg Mayles. If anything, they would probably make cameos in eachother's games instead. Playtonic has shown to poke at their own past though, but they haven't directly insulted Rare though. I still respect them both in high ways though. Even though I'm not going to play it, Sea of Thieves looks freaking amazing... And don't even get me started on how great Yooka-Laylee is! :)

Also them screwing Sony over and going with Phillips was also a big fuck up on the Big N's part. They got crappy Mario and Zelda CD-i games that makes the franchise look like a joke and helped make Sony become the video game giant they are today that gave Nintendo some fierce competition and ultimately left them in the dust. Way to go letting Microsoft buy Rare and kill all the beloved Rare franchises in the process!

It just makes me sick to know that Microsoft really bought Rare before Nintendo and Nintendo did nothing. They bought Pokémon Company and Game Freak but not Rare Studios. I just never understood that. I would've bought them years ago with the SNES after such successful games and franchises. As an entrepreneur I've learned just from this that I should never let talent go away. Sometimes you only get one chance. I don't see why Microsoft doesn't just sell Rare though.. of course that's just losing money... but at least now they can hopefully continue to work on future projects together thanks to Banjo being in Smash. I can't believe he's in Smash. People have died waiting for something as incredible as this to happen. It's an honor to be able to live and write this on the internet.

Nuts and Bolts wasn't a bad game. It was a bad BANJO game, but it wasn't a bad game by itself. I still think, to this day, if Nuts and Bolts was released as its own standalone title with its own unique characters and story it likely would have done better. As it, to me, it just feels like its own game only with BK slapped on it almost as an afterthought. Like the entire reason the game even tried to be successful in the first place was because it was riding the coattails of its predecessors and not necessarily trying to make a name for itself. The vehicular gameplay is solid enough, and I feel the draw behind it is more about the creation aspect than anything. You only get as much fun and enjoyment out of the game as you're willing to invest. That's just my opinion, however.

At one point in the Kazoo phase of development, the developers once considered a boss idea with a possibly graphic ending. The idea was for the boss to be small and weak, growing in size and power as the player fed the boss until it exploded. Funnily enough, the concept was brought back in two different forms in Conker's Bad Fur Day: One where the player has to feed a gassy mouse three pieces of cheese until it explodes from excessive gas buildup, and the other being the Count Batula boss fight where after feeding the count enough blood, his ceiling perch would eventually snap from the excess weight and cause him to fall into the grinder, reverting Conker back to normal as a result of the counts grisly demise.

Like I said, I did give it a chance. The vehicles handled SO poorly and the levels felt SO empty! I wanted to like it but I rage quitted after the first level! IT WAS A MAJOR REASON I EVEN GOT AN XBOX 360! This game made me ditch it! I haven't touched that thing in years!

K Michael Exactly. I never had any vehicle control issues. I would make the craziest designs and none of them handled poorly. If anything I would say they handled too good, even the poorly balanced ones and were a little too design restrictive in this.

g.calvertmusic Most of the games made by Rare were successful and helped to create a awesome image of Nintendo. Besides, the creative potential that the original team had was incredible. They made games really unique. I believe that there was IP's with potential, just there was more lack of vision by Nintendo... in Rare they worked not just for the money, I think.

Meh. Not a big deal. It was worse for Rare than it was for Nintendo. Not to mention... Rare let themselves be bought by Microsoft. They could have said no. They could have been the ones to ask Nintendo (not wait for Nintendo to ask them). Doesn't really matter either way; their style of gameplay (3D platformer, collect-a-thon) would quickly become outdated and obsolete.

Chris Reyes It also could be that business didn't work like that back then. Apparently for Rare money mattered more than any other consequence, so Microsoft probably made a good offer. Gameplay? Really? That is the easiest thing to adjust and improve. What Rare had was creativity, an unique storytelling and art style. In hand with Nintendo they could have been creating new great stuff. That is why it do matters.

At the end of Mumbo's spell chant in Banjo-Kazooie, he says "Ooh, me knackas!" From a Game Grumps episode interview with Grant Kirkhope, he had some swelling "down there" and exclaimed to his doctor "Ooh, me knackas!", "knackas" being slang for "balls". Nintendo also thought the pots in Mad Monster Mansion were saying "F~UUUUUUU** YOUUUUU" instead of "Thank you!" so Grant had to re-record that line several times until Nintendo were happy with what they heard.

I feel like im the only one who liked Nuts & Bolts a lot. People give it a lot of hate for being boring (Which it is) and that it changed the original formula. I love games where you can build and explore; Minecraft, 7 days to die, scrap mechanic, etc. I still have a copy of Nuts & Bolts to this day and I like playing it every once in a while. Its not a bad game by any means, its just completely different from the platformers. If youve got a 360 then give it a shot
