What kind of "bankroll" do you think that you need to play fulltime a $5-$5 $1000 buy-in game? Assume we have 6 months living expenses saved up..

I think 20-30k would be easily doable

50 to60k? Im just guessing bart. But it comes from the perspective of what if you have a couple REALLY rough weeks in a row? Better have that and an extra 20k just to be able to hold on and then rebuild.

Great video Bart. I'd also like to add that being uncomfortably in poker when you move up is standard and doesn't mean it's bad. The first time your caller sat with 300 at 1/3 I bet he was pretty uncomfortable then. Entering the discomfort zone is the only way to grow.

Making 100k a year, setting up a Roth 401 or IRA and buying a couple properties throughout your life is gonna give you a pretty awesome life that more than 90% of people will never experience. In my opinion poker can be a great career, but DEFINITELY isn't for most people.
@Andy-ug2hm
@Andy-ug2hm 4 года назад
Roth is great but capped at 6k a year. 6k max contribution per year x30 years at 10% yearly which is above average return for most people you'll have 1 million for retirement. Now factor inflation with all current money printing.... 1 million in 2050 isn't going to be a lot of money. Also lets not forget very few people make 100k playing 3/5 $500 max buyin game. Playing 5 days a week you'd need to average winning a full buyin every single day played with virtually no losing days. Then factor playing weekdays against almost all regs having little to no edge while dumping rake. To make 100k you have to be cream of the crop 3/5 player. Many casinos even in vegas don't get many if any 5/10 games. And if you are lucky enough to find a 5/10 game in your local casino you will definitely not be playing fish. Realistically you'll be LUCKY to make 100k a year if you become one of the best players around. Players making more than that these days are world class talent. So upside is very capped. I lived west LA for a decade and still have many friends that way. Most make in the 100k range working fairly average jobs. Trow in matching 401k contributions, benefits and you are way better off finding a good job. Why do you think many top pros started teaching courses, yt channels, etc? Teach their opponents for sake of being nice? Reality is they looking for security and ways to supplement their income because they aren't making millions playing poker. Same goes for top tournament pros too. Most of them get staked and take markups for security because they don't feel comfortable only playing with their own money long term
@kellyallen8528

I absolutely love this. This is by far my favorite post yet and is great information for newer players. Every point was so spot on. I was a cash pro for almost 10 years. After 6, I was burnt out. Going from hotel to hotel, living out of a suitcase, not seeing family and friends often and not eating much (most of which was at the poker table in the high limit rooms). I quit 12 years ago (mainly because my wife said this is no way to have a marriage with me away so much and wanted me to quit) and because of the overly aggressive online players coming to live play, the people that got more knowledgeable about the game, made more moves and made many bluffs that I wasn’t used to. The game changed for sure. The regulars that I and other pros pounded for years either quit or moved down to 5/10 or 5/5. My win ratio and win amounts went down but my loss amounts and frequency went up. I made my money and got out. Excellent points about everything you mentioned and 100% true. I had a wife, house, A couple cars and a condo. I paid everything off through poker and made good money but it’s a very tough living. I had to cover 5k a month and not including my expenses where I knew some cash pros that played 2/5 or 5/5, lived with their parents and had to cover 500 a month for their cell phone, car insurance and meals. I never played to make millions, I was more of an old school pro that VPIPed roughly 7%. My patience, reading ability, bankroll management and my ability to take emotion out of it served me well.

Phone caller, live poker is only decent on evenings and weekends, which means: 1. ALWAYS think of it as ONLY a side hustle! 2. Which means...find a STABLE morning career pursuit for stability and peace of mind. Computer programmer, computer engineer, etc. $$$$$$$$$$$$$ 3. Shot-take on Friday and Saturday evenings and stick to 2/3 during the week.

100k a year playing cards sounds like a pretty good long term career. There's always going to be tons of information out there on how to get better. At the same time though, there's tons of great free information on how to lose weight... yet pretty clear not everyone sticks to it. It's the same with poker. The people who want it the most, get it. Just think of Doyal. Definitely long term. Is it for everyone? No, and that's all the more reason the people that it is for, the people who love it, will succeed as a long term career.
@monsweko
@monsweko 4 года назад
Bart’s point is that if you are smart, hard-working and disciplined enough to make $100k/yr playing poker, then you could make more than that at a variety of careers. Put another way, it is the rare person for whom poker is their most profitable career path.
@frederickjk3
@frederickjk3 4 года назад
@@monsweko perhaps, but my point is, I would rather be playing poker than doing those other career options. Life isn't all about money. Doing what you are called to do is key. I am not the only person who would rather sit at a poker table for the next 30 years, instead of a cubical. 100k a year will do fine. (Personally speaking though, I know there's much more to be made ;) )
@aaronsoto4622

100k a year ain't much to live in California. After taxes that 60-65k. 5,000$ take home isn't exactly "living the life". Barely getting by to be honest lol. And if your able to make 100k a year gambling then your definitely smart enough to start your own business and make exponentially more.
@frederickjk3
@frederickjk3 4 года назад
@@aaronsoto4622 you know, a lot of people say this, but there really isn't much proof of it. Even Doyal tried multiple businesses and ended up always going back to poker. Many poker players have tried starting businesses and didn't make it. Some do, but the two don't seem to work out as often as people think. Even a company like 3bet, very popular poker clothing, closed. Again, it's all about what you want to do. Anybody can do anything, but what is it you want to do. I would rather make 100k a year playing poker than 200k a year being a crane operator in NYC. I've learned many things in my life. Two main lessons that pertain to this topic are, it's not all about the money. You have to make enough for your personal version of success and savings (which may be in the billions literally or as low as 30k a year) and the other lesson is, just because you can be doing something else, should you be, and even are you called to it? I could go make 300k a year selling Ferraris. I used to be a very successful car salesman. I hated it. I hate the idea of credit and watching so many people buy cars on loans it gave me nightmares. So many people don't know how to properly save money for things they want, that it deeply disturbed me to the point I quit. Could I make more money? Yes. Could I do it? Yes. The question everyone forgets, is should I be doing it? That comes with many little questions, for example, do I like it? Do I feel productive? Really it all comes down to, what are you called to do. For me, a mathematical game where you and others get to have fun while competing at a high level for profit. Honing out skills to become even better, and when people like engineers play, it's like doing fun math homework. They go onto be more productive at work, coming in every week or so, while I keep using my skills against everyone else who comes in and out to play poker. It's very similar to professions such as being movie star or a teacher. I myself isn't bringing much into the world in a traditional sense. I'm not building something ect. I am there though, so that the people who do those types of things, run businesses ect, have a way to relax and learn in a fun environment. It really is like being a teacher. Helping others use their minds and to be more productive in their field of work.

I mean shit..100k/yr u can buy a business and hire someone to run it..end of the day Poker still a job..take ur $$ and make it work for you in whatever way you can. Rental properties.. laundromats..ATMs.. Vending Machines.. whatever man once u get the money..it's up to you to make it count for something. It feels like ALOT of poker players and ppl in general aren't particularly good at that aspect. Setting up things that'll keep going when they're not. I don't really wanna be handcuffed to anything lol. But ya definitely getting money isn't the hard part in poker..it's figuring out what to do with it and that's the key imo.

Great video Bart. Very informative for us low stakes guys. I've played 2-3 300 nl for a good year at the bike. Always buying in for the max 300. To be honest, I consider myself one of the better players. I'm profitable but only slightly. I've had months where I win 7k (my best) and some around 3-4k. Unfortunately at the end of the year and the end of the ridiculousness of variance. The drop just plays to huge a role in the long run. If you playing poker 6-8 hours a day, your paying 60-80$ to the drop a session. That's a simple fact. I think I made about 16k playing 2/3 over 200 sessions. Obviously not enough to make a living. The tips and drop just add up massively. Now if there was no drop no tips then your at 30k easy profit.

I used to play 40 hours plus weekly in 2016 and would lose regularly. I would play during the day when nits and OMC were present and lose money. Took time away from the game and now play during busy times and have been killing 1-2 and 1-3 games playing short stack strategy. I also won a 3500$ jackpot playing 4-8 Omaha hi lo (kill) at the Orleans last year. I definately advocate playing at the right times of day, less hours weekly, and table selection. Also a good side hustle most top tier poker players are making money off the felt through various mediums.

Hello Bart! Thank you for the educational videos in your channel. Currently Im playing live poker for a living in Europe. I want to move to USA and to play mainly 5/10 and 10/20 NL. What bankroll would you recomend me to have and also which states do you think would be the best choice? Right now bankroll is at 100k$ but please consider the fact that I want to join the games with at least 200BB and usually I'm looking to cover everyone on the table. I think a lot of my EV comes from playing deeper game. Also I would cover my montly expenses (rent, food, etc.) from the bankroll. No side incomes. Thank you in advance! Have a nice year!

I'm curious as to any descent recommendations on how a good bankroll should be used. I have $5k and there's $1/$2 with a buyin of $100-$500 and a $2/$5 game with a $200-$800 buyin. I have a job and I'm looking to play roughly 20 hours a week. I feel like $1/$2 is the only feasible option but I'm stuck on how much to buyin. 10 buy ins of $500 seems extreme. I'm comfortable with 100bb stack so 25 buyins of $200 seems decent but I'm not sure. I do work and I can replenish my bankroll by $500/$800 monthly after my bills. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

After playing 1000+ hours of $1/2 in Vegas in both 2018 and 2019 i can say about $30 or even $35 an hour is attainable for the very best. Because the games are so passive IMO 9K or 30 buy ins should be enough for a crusher (at maybe 95%+ certainty). That is incl factoring playing the best weekly free rolls which add surprising value esp considering they are exceptionally soft. But totally agree that it is a dead end unless you end up beating much bigger games and if you can crush $1/2 you can make much more $ doing other shit. Using comps and free buffet promotions you can live on $500 a month for everything excl rent. But yeah I would say it is not a viable "for profit "option. Personally it is my excuse to get away from the wife for a few months . LOL Also at 8:45 u r so right about poker getting harder and harder.Could even see diff between 2018 and 2019.Most of the "for profit" young regs are watching vlogs, using equilab, flopzilla etc and talking to others. 30K waiting in Vegas bank and looking fwd to trying to crush the $2/5 streets when travel is safe again.

It's all good when you're living at home with mommy and daddy. Get out in the real world, your own place, kids, that usually puts an end to "poker careers" by 30 really quick. It's not a career. The poker on tv has glamoured it up to be this incredible "lottery winners" story. The perception makes it look easy and fun. That's not how poker is in real life. It's really sad for most people. Just like degenerate gamblers, poker can be the same way. You wanna knock it around in your 20s when you have no responsbilities. Great. Everyone is doing it.
