From the Banks video archives comes an interview with Gale Banks himself talking about the company’s record-setting Pontiac GTA back in 2000. Powered by a twin-turbo 454 ci producing 1,800hp + and 2,000tq + the Banks / Pontiac Trans Am GTA reached a terminal speed of 283 mph made the Trans Am the world’s fastest stock-bodied passenger car on gasoline. Well before @bugatti, @koenigsegg, or @hennesseyperformance were breaking records. The Banks Trans Am GTA would hold the record for the next 10 years.⁠ The historic run was captured by an in-cabin video where you can hear the engine churning and the sound of the innovative Banks Shuttle Valve blow-off system working to keep the turbo spinning at full speed between shifts.

I love how, over 30 years ago, Gale says that 1,600+ hp out of 456 cubic inches is just "kind of a mild, turbocharged, big-block"! What a legend! Haha!

2-3 shift, and 3-4 shift both missed, plus sounds like several moments of wheelspin, so a perfect run would have held that record even longer :)

Would love to see a revision of that engine combo In a 2021 editions maybe only in theory since thats there is the turbo, pistons, rods, crank, cam intercoolers and so on is evolved so much since that time.

That “whistle” was the whine of straight cut gears in the race transmission they were using, also why he had difficulty shifting gears.

@@bankspower When I was a kid my uncle had a Chevelle he built. He passed in 73, I don't know the specs. But I do know it had a "rock crusher" transmission, I fondly remember him explaining to me, a fascinated 8 year old in 1971, that it was supposed to make that noise, that's what makes it cool! My mom says I got my hot rod soul from him. The sound of those gears brought back some great memories, thanks.

I remember when I saw a magazine article in high school about building a customer car I thought, using a Firebird. Twin turbo, I thought sbc, and trying to hit 200. Well, you were very close, and for one more run, you put Hoosier tires on because they were just a wee bit taller, and you got your 200 mph.

Why are there multible mph listed? single pass, dual pass, unofficial record or something else? RU-vid says 268mph, Banks Homepage says both 287 mph and 267.618 mph, Wiki says 277 mph as certified by the Southern California Timing Association.

Looks more like the 'box baulked at the shift, not uncommon in some race gearboxes, especially those built for massive power. More aggressive movement would get it first go, or have it let go.

The loudest pipes got the most girls... I'm calling bullshit on that. All the things that I thought would impress girls didn't matter one bit. They didn't care how fast your car was, or how loud the stereo could thump and boom. You know who was attracted to that stuff? Just the guys, lol. The girls might care if you had a nice car, but that's it. They liked the pretty boys mostly.
