Banks Super-Turbo Methanol Diesel Pikes Peak Outrage

This video goes deep inside the totally unique racing project with clear explanations on what Mike Ryan and Gale Banks set out to do-and how they planned to do it.
Mike Ryan's Banks Super-Turbo Pikes Peak Freightliner is unlike any other truck in the universe. The truck is equipped with a 14.0L Detroit Diesel 60 series engine with a compression ratio of 15-1 and a fuel redline of 2700 RPM. The body is constructed entirely of fiberglass and carbon fiber, even still weighing in at just over 5 tons. Like any well balanced race vehicle, it is a mid-engine design. This truck truly tests the merit of each and every one of its systems. Good acceleration requires a responsive engine, high speed requires massive horsepower and cornering and handling require extreme braking capability.
Mike Ryan's Freightliner is an ideal platform to validate the Super-Turbo concept as well as to test the varied uses of the Banks Straight-Shot, Double-Shot and Triple Shot Water-Methanol Injection System. The potential benefits include not only increased power, but also improved fuel economy and reduced emissions.

I Saw and extensively photographed this truck at the Mid America trucking show the supercharger is over driven and they use a waste gate after it before it goes into the turbo it has one too those 2 smaller pipes beside the exhaust are the waste gate outlets I also met and talked to both Mr Ryan and Bob Ball his engine builder they know what they are doing Ive met Mr Banks years ago at a boat show the 3 of them make a great think tank !!!

Awesome idea with fogging the intercooler, I've often wondered about how I can get that intercooler colder, I've even wondered about insulation on the piping to keep engine compartment heat from warming the air, great job, I'll be pulling the trigger soon on some Banks products, thanks for all the hard work.

More great stuff from Gale Banks. I dream about this stuff. He's done it. Using a supercharger to boost a turbo is not new. Chase Knight and Al Liddert did it in the early '70's on a dragster. Eaton Corporation developed a super-turbo in the 2003-2005 time frame that went into production on the VW 1.4L Twincharger engine in Europe. It is a great way to get a turbo to spool faster. On the VW application, the supercharger is clutched off at 3000 engine rpm, and all boost is supplied by the turbo after that.
@dsruddell

Using a supercharger to boost a turbocharger is far from new, WW2 American bombers had turbo-superchargers along with water/methanol injection. Most American fighters had what was called emergency war power where the throttle was pushed past maximum power and it tripped a wire that set of a nitrogen charger tank of water/methanol mix along with dumping massive amounts of directly into the cylinders to give a serious boost. Depending on the engine it could give any where from 50 to 500 extra horsepower, but only for a few seconds or it would melt the engine down. Think of it like the wet nitrous systems dragster use today, but generally the engines would have to be rebuilt upon landing after using war power due to the damage caused. (And before anyone asks, you couldn't use nitrous at his altitudes, if there is no extra oxygen to bring into the engine like nitrous does, it wouldn't work. At his altitudes the turbos and superchargers were already making the intake charge dense as possible.)
@permagrin8742
@permagrin8742 5 лет назад
? As nitrous brings o2 in, needing fuel to keep AF ratio up, why would it not work? Nitrousshould work at any altitude. As long as there is cylinder pressure enough to ‘split the atom’ what does altitude have to do with it? Nitrous is used as a safe transport of o2 since it doesn’t burn with fuel but needs enough pressure and heat to separate the molecules apart first. Probably more dangerous to have a couple thousand psi tank getting shot at in a combat scenario.

Blowers provide low RPM instantaneous boost. Turbos need to spool, but can provide higher amounts of boost than Blowers. So it force feeds the blower the higher boost pressures. It's likely a roots blower anyway so there aren't much losses from the turbos overcharging the super. Diesels don't rev higher than 3-4000 RPM's anyway. So air a high revs isn't really as much of a concern on gassers.
@JosephArata

Does the supercharger become a restriction at higher RPM where the turbo is spooled up and building more pressure? A supercharger only moves so much air per rotation and, at higher RPM, is out-flowed by a big turbo. They should engineer in a bypass system so that the turbo can reach max potential at higher RPM and leave the supercharger in place to assist with lower RPM grunt while outside of the peak operating range of the turbo.
@brandonobaza8610
@brandonobaza8610 2 года назад
I vaguely recall reading about this in Diesel Power in 2013. From what I can tell, the supercharger drive is setup to push more air than the turbo can eat, with excess air blown off. Peak power is @ 2,700 engine RPM, so it's possible the supercharger never enters an overspeed condition, nor becomes a choke point. I could be wrong, though.

@@406Steven Check out the "Killing a Duramax" series by Banks (if you haven't already). They just keep adding power to an L5P until something maxes out, then they upgrade it. Last one I saw had a turbo-super arrangement: parallel twin turbos feeding a supercharger. What happened is exactly what you described: the supercharger maxed out, choked the turbos, and the whole rig fell on its face. The efficiency sucked and the power band was too narrow. (Spoiler alert) Gale knew all along the setup was going to fail. The whole point was to show why he uses a supercharger to feed turbos, not vice versa. The series is pretty fascinating.

why have the blower going into the turbo, if u have it the other way round the turbo can compress the gas the blower can step it up, the trurbo will make up the difference with out a vacuum being created if the turbo is to have any benefit because the turbo cannot give extra if it sucks through the blower, if the idea is to be blower for bottom end and turbo to add extra, the turbo can step it up the same way otherwise...or Im missing something...I must be I guess.

to put it simply the turbo cannot give any extra air, the supercharger is positive displacement, so if the turbo is to pump any extra air the only hope is to compress it pre supercharger; a turbo downwind with just create vacuum between itself and the supercharger if it tries to pump any more air than the blower is already giving!?

+tpvalley In theory, communism works. I believe he's thinking of eliminating the turbo lag. The super does the torque at launch & then the turbo brings in the horseys in & takes over once enertia is built up.
@GIGABACHI
@GIGABACHI 5 лет назад
I've always been under the notion that on Turbo-Supercharged engines you wanted the Turbo to be the first "compressor" and the blower the second "receiving" one because when the blower runs out of it's efficiency window the big turbo can still pickup the slack and somewhat "mask" the blower's deficiency problem. Somebody better spill the facts of this and set the record straight, otherwise I think this fancy setup is backwards.
@NBSV1
@NBSV1 5 лет назад
JIGA BACHI You typically want the supercharger to cover lower rpm before the turbo gets spooled. Then the turbo can take over. That’s the complexity because you want the supercharger to disconnect so it isn’t a power drag and a restriction when the turbo comes on.

That's what I'm thinking too, I see it the same as a compound turbo set up. Big turbo feeds into small one. The smaller turbo (or supercharger in case of the video) spools first pulling air through big turbo until big turbo spools and then compresses air for the smaller turbo to compress again and get a higher pressure ratio with less work and higher efficiency as well as getting a boost early and carrying to the higher rpms
@jkdwayne
@jkdwayne 5 лет назад
They use the Supercharger to Build Low RPM Boost , so they can use larger turbo housings for more boost . The supercharger also has an added benefit by being first inline , it also spools up the turbos quicker , by blowing through it and spinning up the compressor wheel.
