This is my new favorite variations of a mop fly called the galaxy mop. It’s a great attractor pattern that fish love! Competitions don’t feel that same love with this particular fly being banned from the use in serval of them. But if you want to give it a try you can pick up the materials to tie it for 15% here:

#Jstockard is truly the one stop shop for all of my fly tying needs. I love how in the catalog they actually show each brand and model of hook they sell. really helps the process of choosing a hook style when purchasing hooks. Deadly Fly pattern for sure. Galaxy Mop looks better when it has been furled before adhering it to the hook with threadwraps. Got mine from a local fly shop rather than J Stockard but wouldn't mind purchasing from the latter with a gift card.

Most of the banned flies come down to materials used. The definition of a fly says it has to be made with natural materials. However, there are many flies used in competition that dont fit that description and are still allowed. So I'm not 100% sure of the logic

Is that mop material simply a glorified chenille? If so, how do we ensure that the core doesn't unravel and the material scatter? Thanks in advance for any response. That's a great looking pattern, by the way.

You are correct, it is chenille. The best way to keep it together is to barely touch it with a lighter after you cut it to length. It not only rounds the end, but it makes it bombproof

Definitely not banned. Squirmies were banned by FIPS mouche a couple years ago but mops are still 100% legal under FIPS mouche rules. If this fly was banned, it was only banned at a local level.

Beautiful variation! What's the difference between using a dubbing loop and just doing a regular dubbing noodle? When should I decide between the two? #Jstockard

Dubbing loop or spilt thread for buggier looks. Dubbing noodle just for standard. You can always dub that stuff loose on the thread then take a piece of Velcro and brush it out. Personally I don’t really dub this fly because it’s a guide fly so I crank them out as fast as I can

What ever the fish want it to be. It’s just a general buggy pattern. So they likely take it thinking it’s many different things. I wish I could ask them 😂 but all I know is they eat it!

I was leery about getting the right one and wondered how necessary it really would be, but I highly recommend it. Basically $50 buy-in to get extremely creative with all of your materials. Makes for fantastic spiraled collars on just about any fly too. Not trying to sell em, just surprised how versatile it ended up being

That's why I love tying in the first place. It's artificial living organisms that spring forth from my imagination. From tiny, colorful midge for gill and trout, to musky streamers I can hardly cast, my mind fuels my creations every step of the way.
