So I went back to look at the article, and actually King tried to trademark the word "Saga" and tried to make Banner saga change its name. www.polygon.com/2014/4/17/5624980/king-settles-trademark-disputes-with-the-banner-saga-developer
Just because they made a game for retards doesn't mean they lose their right to sue, sir. But seriously, this is the most hilarious thing I learned today.
Candy crush and all of their ridiculous same game slightly different name games can bury themselves with all of the E.T. copies in the middle of the desert. They also tried to sue another game with the word "candy" in its title. They really think they are special man and they are really not.
This is the one of the best games I have ever played. With unique story that is not short and filled with cliches like in most games. I loved the gameplay as well. We all have our opinions, but for me, this is a 9/10 game that is absolutely worth a buy.
I actually bought Banner Saga 1 on a whim last weekend. I was in a turn based frame of mind. I bought this and Invisible Inc. I had stayed away from Banner Saga because of this review, but having the game now. It has consumed my life. I'm playing on hard, the combat is challenging. Requires thought. The art style is of course amazing and the sound track I cannot believe how good it is. I cannot believe I denied myself the experience of this game sooner because of the review. I actually feel cheated, but all's well that ends well. I am enamored, almost brought to tears how good this is, and I'm a jaded 37 year old long time gamer exhausted with this industry.
Your comment sold me o. The game. Wasnt gunna download it (free on gamepass) because of this review. But then I saw your comment and now ots downloading lol
Turn based games have really made a comeback: banner saga, xcom2, shadowrun, wasteland2, hard west just to name a few. The kickstarter scene seems to love'em.
A year late on this reply, but better late than never. The reason genres like turn based and horror are relegated to indie titles rather than AAA is because those are examples of a niche genre that won't have mass appeal like an FPS or a sandbox. AAA publishers these days seem loathe to touch anything that won't have broad appeal with a ten foot pole, so people that like those niche genres have been forced into the indie scene just to play their favorite types of games. Which is sad, since things like P.T. demonstrated that AAA developers can absolutely nail those genres if they wanted to, and put that extra money and manpower that indie developers won't have to good use.
I've played through this 3 times and never noticed slow loading screen or the blurriness problem. It was one of my favorite titles from that year and the sequel is coming soon. The only complaint I had was the sudden ending.
I got it on Xbox One and just beat it. I loved it. The combat, the characters, the art style, all great. Loading screens and frame rate issues were very prominent, but honestly, I didn't care. This game hit a spot for me that hasn't been hit since Journey. Its simplistic while epic, unforgiving while satisfying. It just shows that opinions are just opinions. And taste is just taste. I think it's a love it or hate it kind of game. Anyway, great review. It was well composed, thoughtful, and detailed.
Weird review, seems to me you nitpicked on stuff which frankly wasnt a big deal for me, yeah the combat is a bit basic and yeah you can lose out on a favorite char without knowing what the hell happened but its beautiful graphics, nice setting, great music and truly interesting C&C warrant the asking price, plus it is good for a couple of replays especialy if you wanted to try to save a particular character or see more of their story. This game on the tablet recently turned a pretty much disastrous trip into an uneventful but fun experience because of Banner Saga
This game on Pc was so much fun, one of my top five. It is sad it didn't add up on console. Good review, but don't put this game away, try it on PC and get a real experience if you enjoy this style of game. Still a good job on the review, keep it up.
It has replay-ability, especially the 2nd game. You switch around choices, use characters you didn't use, and make a different final decision, and then transfer to banner saga 2. I mean there are characters that you can lose that have damn stuff like "can summon a bear to fight as another unit" and overwatch and different things.
Great review Karak! I've been excited for this game ever since it was announced to be coming to ps4. It sounds like it has a couple issues. I hope theres a day one ps plus discount because i wouldn't mind spending under $15 for this. Anything over that and i'll just wait for a sale, like you recommended.
Good review as always. I really like the game so far but I only paid $4 (got Transistor for $5 as well on PS store sale!) so that definitely adds a lot of forgiveness on my end. Everything you said was fair though. Keep it up!
It's a shame the port is not the best. I played the PC version and found it a delightful little game, albeit understandably limited given it's Kickstarter origins. I nonetheless have my fingers crossed for Banner Saga 2.
Excellent review. Disappointing to hear it falls short of what I had hoped it would be on console, but the criticisms appear quite valid and, just as importantly, informative.
weirdly, I had no cutscene problems in the first game but a ton of issues with the second - whenever the focuses switched to another character it would flip between them repeatedly before stopping
I am not sure, but I think the reason there's stupid loading screens is they use vector images for every thing. instead of saving an image, it save how to make the image, so every time the game loads the image, it has to remake the image every time.
I was always interested in this game, but for some reason I just kind of put it off and decided I'd eventually get it when it was on console. Sad to see the port isn't good and it took so long that Banner Saga 2 is on it's way now. I'll probably just get it on PC during a sale, because it still seems cool.
Nice review. I remember the cut-scene stuttering was an issue when it first came out on PC (or at least on the review I saw it was), but I would have thought they'd have fixed that by now and on fixed console hardware.
You have persuaded me to buy Banner Saga for the PC. The year just barely started and you are already on a roll. 2016 will be the year of the Angry Centaur. Thanks for another great video and God bless! Also, will you be reviewing Assassin's Creed Chronicles India?
very valid critique, but to me this game is still amazing and a high recommandation to anyone interested in turn based games - at least on pc. not sure how much difference there is or if I just don't care that much about tech aspects... did you play this at release or is this first playthrough? got a feeling you mentioned it but I obv. missed it. are you gonna review the 2nd after release? always glad to hear your thoughts
Nice breakdown. My primary issue with the game is how overwritten it is. I honestly LOVE the gameplay, it reminds me of playing Fire Emblem on GBA as a kid. But the storytelling is so needlessly drawn out and, to be frank, amateurish. The gameplay and setting are both dope though, which makes it worth slogging through the story. Has anybody played the sequel? Is there more voice/sound effects? Is the storytelling more efficient and moving?
I played it some time ago but I think you totally missed point of that doublestats system. On pc version you could either attack armor to deal more damage to hitpoints in next turn or attack hitpoints immediately with lesser damage. But that could be option too because lowering hitpoints also crippled enemy's damage. But maybe they made it different in console version. This game is on pc sure buy for everyone who likes turn based strategies.
The zoom looks fine.... Im on a 50 inch watching @ max res.. Wtf? Must be the console? This footage looks fine to me.. perhaps this was taken from the PC version?
Awww, great review but I thought it was Banner Saga 2 review. Damn I'm eager for that game, this game is simply amaaaazing. So many choices that matter.
+AngryCentaurGaming Oh?! I played 5 hours and didn't notice any. I was really pleasantly suprised that a new game worked as well as this one. Usually new games tend to have all sorts of bugs and crashes first week.
I've played this game on an iPad air and i don't remember experiencing any excessive load times on that platform. Either my memory isn't that trustworthy or the game runs better on a tablet than a console. Granted i played the game over half a year ago so it's not that fresh ln my mind, so does someone know the actual performance comparison?
I played this one on pc and really wanted to like it, but quit it because I absolutely hated some design decisions they made in combat. If I remember correctly the enemy gets as much turns as you do, which means if you kill an enemy unit, another one of his basically gets a free turn. So if you had 6 units and the enemy 2, each enemy would get 2-3 turns. That leads to tactics like maim-don't kill and intentionally suiciding. This made the combat as unenjoyable as it can get for me.
+ccharlot back on the 13th. Drive by posting. I am ok with it though. I felt the thread was one of those made just to bring attention to someone who wanted to bitch.
It has been on mobile. I would've thought they'd do something to fasten it up for the console port. Signs of a lazy port right there. Call me old fashioned if you will, but I'm done reading text; give me voice actors or death, I say. It maybe OK for an indie team of only a few, but isn't former BioWare people involved in making this? A really balanced review, I'd say wait for a sale is a 100% spot on.
+David Riley Skill has nothing to do with that. Voice actors are incredibly expensive and if the game is made in the USA, there are weird guild rules that make things extra pricey.
+Juan Aguilar That's very personal. I never really played a turn based game until I played The Banner Saga, and I really liked it. I did play it on PC though.
+NascarFanMel141820 Around 10 dollars on pc, don't know about consoles though. I highly suggest playing this on pc if you can. The sequel is coming out soon. This game really is great for fans of choose your own adventure games of old.
For a whiles I was waiting for a sale price on this game to drop under 10$.. cuz I just don't think this game was worth 20$. And yes finally it 5$ now on steam.
This game needed voice acting badly. Although since the title doesn't include Enhanced Edition, I guess it's just a lazy port with no changes. Look at what Wasteland 2: Director's Cut and Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition gave us. Voice acting and a few more contents. I kind of regret purchasing this at $19.99. This is definitely a wait for sale.
I'm glad I watched this, cuz I was definitely about to waste $20! It's really too bad that there are so few turn-based combat games on the new consoles, and even fewer good ones. It's sad that the best TBC game I've played in the past year or so is South Park: The Stick of Truth..it's a great game but I have to bust out the ol' PS3 in 720p to play it! Child of Light is pretty good, but it's lacking replay value in a big way, and it's so terribly linear. Divinity Original Sin on PS4 is so terribly clunky and therefore it's rubbish IMO. Ah well, here's to hoping that maybe *someone* will make a really good TBC game for new gen. consoles SOON!
Well that sucks! I wanted to play this one, because it made me think of the movie Fire and Ice! It looked to have that 80's feel. Seems more like a pass.
OMG these consoles are so weak they can't even play 2d well... Seriously, this is a messed up port. there's no reason long loading or stuttering should be on a game like this. They are already releasing this 2 years after the pc they should waited and finished it correctly. Now they will look stupid and patch it later or look bad and not bother with it at all.
