Baofeng UV-10R - Best Baofeng Yet? - The First Look

In this episode, I evaluate the UV10R claims of being 10,20,30,40, 100, 200 watts and a HUGE battery life. Claims are crazy and this video is just documentation of certain things.
Do not fall for the hype. fast forward to. 6.5 minutes for my testing or to the end for the part where I say this isn't a good deal and you should not consider this radio.
I do suggest watching other reviews before making your mind up.
with that, I didn't mention programming and didn't display use of the radio. it sounds and acts like a uv5r.

It's a great little radio. It's powered by a tiny nuclear reactor that ensures a steady 1,200-watt output for well over ten years between recharging. It was developed by Lt. Wong Dong Fu, a Chinese-American nuclear technician aboard a nuclear Seawolf-class fast attack tactical submarine. It's waterproof, dustproof and blender-proof. And it's got four tiny fans that help it levitate more than a hundred feet over the ground for well over five hours, while a HD camera takes stunning videos. And there's absolutely no hype.

I did happen to purchase one of the Radios for 25$. Both my base charger and USB chargers work fine. The battery fully charges. But the radio is not as advertised. I have a UV-6R and wanted another radio to use with it.To me the radio seems no more than a UV-6R. It's ok for my needs. It will even charge using my UV-6R base charger.

@HAMRADIODUDE
@HAMRADIODUDE 2 года назад
7.5 on UHF... Not bad. I have found Baofeng does a decent job of remaining fairly accurate on their amazon page and descriptions. It seems to be the third party sellers who attempt to push the truth a bit. Something that adds a little complexity to this radio is the FCC certification: fcc.report/FCC-ID/2AJGM-UV10R/5203464.pdf . It appears a UV-10R was approved for part 15, but it also appears Baofeng doesn't officially sell them. I am not sure why that is. Interesting stuff. I hope you are enjoying the radio!

@mjm9863
@mjm9863 3 года назад
Exactly. That just change the body, give them a different form-factor, say it was “more pweor” and the lemmings fall for it. Didn’t you know, the more “pweor” they have, the better it is. Never mind the frontend filtering and receiver circuit type, it’s the amount of “pweor” that a radio has that determines quality. My Motorola and Yaesu junk HT’s only have 4W. Crap. I must be an idiot for spending what I did on them when I could’ve gotten a bunch of higher “pweor” Baofengs instead. I could’ve even made a repeater out of two Boefengs by just connecting them with audio cable, turned on VOX, and threw them into a tree. Same with my Motorola CDM’s I used for a repeater. I didn’t need to spend all that money on a vari-notch duplexer, tune it with a signal generator and spec-annie, waste money on an id-o-matic, go through loops with my community and neighbors about my tower, etc. when I could’ve just tossed a pair of Baofengs in a tree.

so basically the emerson/oster/sunbeam microwaves of ham radios? I say that because I taken all those microwaves appart in recent years all made between 2009 and 2021, each having the exact same boards, internals and molded parts, with different faces. Same stamped metal frame, same or very similar turntable drive. And, while Im on the subject of microwaves I wonder if the ones sold with lower watts are actually just locked out in sofware in order to cripple the magnetron's output capacity eh? Maybe a jumper setting somewhere? Or maybe the ones that claim to have higher wattage don't actually at all?

I was given one of these to repair as it would transmit immediately on start-up without key-up. I ended up owning it as the original owner received a full refund from Wish after some haggling and he uploaded a video of my initial testing. Finally got around to repairing it and it turned out to be a solder ball 9one of several )shorting the PTT connections. It tested out at similar results to yours regarding transmit power. I never tested for S.E, as my Anritsu boat anchor of a Spectrum Analyser decided to check out of this cruel world but hopefully mine is the same as yours. All in all it's not a terrible HT and comparable to a UV-5R.

Now if you need to get your new ham son or daughter a first radio then this Baofeng is a good option money wise. It will get them on the air and they are not terrible radios, then later if they stick to the hobby and keep the interest then go to the Dayton Ham Fest if you can get here or online HRO and get them a good radio. Nowhere in any documents that I have seen do they claim 24000 mAh battery life. The standard battery which comes with the unit is 2800 mAh, but aftermarket batteries up to 5800 mAh are available. The supplied charger base does work, you just need to take care to align the slots on the battery with the corresponding guide in the charger base. You cannot just jiggle it a bit and say it does not fit, you need to actually take a little bit of time and effort to make it fit. The plug-in cord which fits the battery directly does charge it, but takes longer than the base, for some reason. If you do a review, do it properly - have a look at the charger base and see why "it doesn't fit".

OK, so another way to calculate the 25uW spec is to say it’s 53dB down on 5W. If the radio is producing 5W and the fundamental freq is at -18dB your spectrum analyser should show the sproggies at -71dB or less on your screen. With the advertised 60W output that’s an 82dB drop on your screen so they would be down in the noise… Sorry - was a radio comms engineer for too long!

Wish also sells 'real' and 'certified' Rolex and other high-end watches, yeeaah.....don't buy stuff off wish. Baofeng radios aren't that bad, as long as you filter and weed out the BS. I've purchased three in the last five years, putting all of them through hell and they all still operate to spec.

60 watts 😂😂😂😂 i have a good one for you i purchased a baofeng uv5 r 5th generation from amazon. Anywho to cut a long story short if you pop on a better antenna nagoya or abbree the radio completely loses the ability to receive low level incoming signals. place the originsl uv5r rubber duck on and it receives without a problem im still scratching my brain on that one . nice upload by the way. 73 from the uk

@@HAMRADIODUDE yes i assumed it was the crappy front end funny thing is i have a number of the dreaded beasties in the shack use them for repeater ear wigging and only the uv5r 5th gen and the gt3 mk 2 suffer from this. still as they say you get what you pay for, better to pay a bit more for a yeasu or icom or a kenwood for the quality and less hastle. 73

You cant charge a battery that sits at 7+ volts with the 5 volt that usb provides. This has puzzeled me for a while how this would work but you've just proven my suspicion that it cannot work. It needs a dc dc step up converter.

No its legit it is 60watts You just haven't unlocked the secret feature you have to remove the back cover and wedge a piece of gum between the capacitor and the big black thingy that looks like a spider and spit on it for it to work. It has to be extremely high quality gum, it will not work if you use dollar store gum. The higher quality the gum, the more powerful the watts.

You did a pretty good job explaining the spec an. I’m not familiar with the model you used but you should be able to measure your test set up and enter it in as a reference level offset. Then you readings will be fairly accurate. You should also be able to measure channel power as a function. Then measure the spurious signals in micro watts. AC7WD Have a great day.

I wouldn't look at anything more than the UV5R or the GT3TP-Mk3. The GT3-MK3 is about the best so far, but they should have kept the original dark background screen and white LED's. 8.5w on UHF. 2800 battery seems to last long enough. Unless they buck their ideas up and stop lying, I can see this company going down the pan

I'm sure this isn't made up, but the closest looking baofeng uv that the reviewer is talking about is the 9s. Maybe the 10r is so new that baofeng hasn't listed it on their website yet. That is the most likely possibility.

I'm fairly certain someone just relabeled some UV5R's and called the UV10R's and gave them some crazy specs. Minus the battery, that thing is weird and who knows how that design came about. But I do think it's not an official Baofeng Product. Thanks for the comment!
