Too many lies and ignorant comments are being spread-around RU-vid about the Baofeng UV-5R! I'm not referring to RU-vid videos discussing the UV5R, I am referring to comments posted on videos about the Baofeng UV-5R .. There is a certain group of people that just love to spread misinformation about this great little radio and I'm here to put an end to it! Is the UV5r banned? Can you use the UV-5R for HAM? Can you use a Baofeng on GMRS? Why do licensed ham operators spread so many lies on RU-vid making other ham operators look bad? Let's talk about it - or more accurately, watch to me talk about it.

An innocent UV5R? Have you measured the harmonics and spurious that that radio gives? Buy yourself an oscilloscope and when you measure it you will be able to speak with knowledge of the facts. Do what you want in the USA, but if in Europe we have not approved this radio in some bands it is for a reason. Its sale in civilized countries should be prohibited. Let the Chinese deal with it.

Additionally, I practice using my radio every week with a group of fellow hams in an "Emergency Radio Net", and not only is it useful for becoming familiar with your radio, it's also only legal if you have a license (or are with someone who has one) -- due to the lack of emergency at practice time!

Let me tell you a story about the FCC. Years ago I worked for a cable company and there was a Radio operator that would transmit near our antennas and knockdown several local channels in the area. The company filed a complaint with the FCC and it took not 1 or 2 but 7 years for them to act and do something about it. In the end, really all they did was tell them to knock it off. Just like every other government agency they move extremely slow and don't want to do their job. I really doubt if they would ever go after someone for using the wrong radio. Let's get serious!
@johncunliffe3152
@johncunliffe3152 Год назад
Say do you love writing fiction? You good at it. If a ham operator is able to "knock several channels off, then that is clearly the cable providers problem since their so called closed system permits ingress. Cable shares many cannels on the same frequency as Hams and other licensed users. Cable is not permitted to interfere with licensed over the air users and has to accept / remedy on their own all interference. Thats the law. The fairy tale that the FCC told the hams to stop interfering is just that, a fairy tale. Most likely the customer complaints to the cable company and the FCC became so numerous that the cable company finally invested the money and fixed its system to avoid a fine from the FCC. We have locally successfully forced the cable company to abandon CH18 because it interfered / was open to interference from ham radio. The cable company rather abandoned one channel than invest the money to fix their leak. Lucky there is no airport close by and the interference caused by the cable companies leaky system to emergency system is so far non existent or the FCC would have them shut down already. A closed system has to be build to stop leaks and to not permit any ingress into the system.

@@johncunliffe3152 depends, there's a few guys with a 500+ watt amp on 70cm band and running that high of TXP can easily interfere with cable TV nearby as that will easily overcome the shielding on most TV grade coax, shoot, if youve still got a coax fed TV you can interfere with it pretty easily by holding an HT next to the cable and transmitting on the right frequencies at full power.

The tags on the mattress is actually targeted to the shops selling them, because like 100 years they used to try and sell the used mattresses back as again as new by cutting them open at the seems and stuffing in all kinds of scraps to make them look good, its basically a way for the consumer to know if it has been tampered or opened, kinda like a warranty sticker that you have to break to open a device. Many of my friends are into bouncing signals off the moon (EME communications) and I might play with that some day myself. It's not for everybody, though. My way of thinking about it is if you're passionate about radio technology that's the best way to go. If all you want is a way to keep in touch with people over a relatively small geographical region then GMRS is probably the better tech for that. Apples vs giraffes.

I am a "HAM" and an avid GMRS radio operator. Everyone must remember that the FCC is an administrative bureau. The FCC makes RULES, not LAWS. The rules set forth by the FCC were not enacted by Congress. Can the FCC levy fines for violating their rules? Yes they can; but as you pointed out, this is a very rare occurrence, and is usually reserved for egregious conduct. Let's remember what the purpose of these rules are; which is to permit the maximum number of people to use the airwaves with the least amount of interference (speaking of all of the Personal Radio Service bands). So using a non Part 95E (or the old 95A) radios, while not causing harmful interference IS keeping within the spirit of the law, if not the letter of it. "No harm, no foul", as it were.
@teo2975
@teo2975 3 года назад
Well, you need to go back to civics 101. Regulatory rules written by agencies that have been empowered to make thme ARE laws, as are controlling applicable court precedence "laws." In fact determinations made by a states attorney general, say Massachusetts attorney general who is empowered to make written interpretations of gun control laws allow the Mass AG to "make law." And regulatory rules can carry criminal penalties. Case law, statutory law (made by legislature) , common law, regulatory/administrative law are all "sources of law" in the US. In the case of the FCC it is specifically allowed by stature ("enabling statute") to make law. There is statue law (an enablement of the FCC by a congressional statute) that makes FCC rules have the same force of law as a statue. In fact FCC administrative decisions about its own rules are also law in that they are similar to case law. libguides.niu.edu/c.php?g=425200&p=2904739 That said what Hams Karens are saying about legality and about enforcement history and conditions, and enforceability when it comes to Baofengs is 99% BS

Yes, which reminds me, if the FCC has been directed to lower the GMRS license fee from $70 to $35, is it permissible to use a GMRS radio without a license in the interim in which we're so patiently waiting? In situations like this, are we justified in using someone else's license designations. Or, what would happen if we just sent them a check for $35 and, if we heard nothing, either made up a designation or used someone else's? If the FCC isn't going to abide the law, why should we? Tte FCC really pisses me off by not abiding by the law, but it expects us to.

I love this! I have both a ham radio license and a GMRS license. I have legal GMRS radios, mostly for setting a good example (and perhaps so I have a radio I can point to if someone were to ever accuse me of using an illegal radio), but most GMRS operators I've met do not use "legal" radios -- many are using Baofengs, but the ones with a little more cash are using Motorolas or other commercial radios. I care much more about how you use the radio, than what sticker it might have on it. If you're being respectful, and following the meaningful rules, no one will be able to tell if your radio is a BTECH GMRS-V1 or a Baofeng UV-82/UV-5R. I've used my Baofeng's on both ham and GMRS repeaters and I've used one of my Yaesu ham radios on a GMRS repeater as well (which is just as illegal as using a Baofeng). It didn't hurt anyone. No one has had any idea, on the rare occasion that I have used an illegal radio, because I was following all the meaningful rules and you can't hear the sound of an FCC stamp. I do have legal radios and I generally use the appropriate radio for the service I'm communicating on, but as someone with both an amateur radio license and a GMRS license, I think it's ridiculous that I'm supposed to use two different radios when I have multiple radios which are capable of transmitting on both services. I don't look down one someone for using a Baofeng. I think they're great. In fact, I probably wouldn't have either a ham or GMRS license if it wasn't for Baofeng. My first ham radio was a Baofeng (UV-82). When I heard that you could get a ham radio for less than $30, I was incredulous! I bought one immediately, started studying, and got licensed. I think it's a great entry into radio and a nice cheap backup rig, even now that I have better stuff. A Baofeng radio costs about the same as a spare battery for one of my Yaesu HTs! If I had to choose, I'd rather have a second radio (with its own battery) than just a second battery for a single radio.

@flyon5029 3 года назад
That is the irony. It is the million plus UV5Rs that are creating an interest and *protection* of the allocation of those ham bands. My home growing up in the 70's had maybe ten or twelve RF devices. Between my wife and two kids we probably have 200 rf radio devices in our home. My smartphone has at least seven separate rf radios in one device (LTE, 3g, GSM, CDMA, bluetooth, 2.5 wifi, 5 wifi) all using different allocations. Out TVs have five, and the remotes for them have three. My thermostat has two radios, and my security cams have three. All those makers of those connected devices are salivating at what everyone knows are the profoundly underused ham bands. The fact that UV5R makes entry into those bands so easy and has utility for off-roaders, campers, etc., is GOOD for long time ham operators. Yes you do feel like you belong to an exclusive club if the entry on ticket and equipment cost is expensive, but what does that get you? Listening in on someone's dinner plans, and other inanity like most ham transmissions are? If the lobbyists for interests that want to "free up" those ham band simply play recordings of an average day's ham tradiffic the consensus will be ham is useless. Young people were attracted to ham in the 1970's because you could build your own radio for cheaper than manufactured, and it was a way to talk in real time to people you did not not know in Japan, the UK, Italy, etc. The former is not the case now by a long shot, and the internet killed the latter. So if not for people getting these cheap handheld devices Ham would be dying way way faster. If 3% of the people eventually end up getting a ticket due to cheap entry it will enormously increase the number of people advocating keeping the ham bands and not auctioning them off to someone making a smart refrigerator

Most of what is reported like taped conversions are not legally admissible. What you can do with your fox hunting is find a State University, a hospital, a construction company, a Count Health department etch that has issued 100 of these and is suing them all in one place. Or a guy in a basement running a 100 watt pirate station an a full scale system for some church. @@calebdoner I've come to the conclusion that the FCC's rules are primarily geared toward helping radio manufacturers sell more radios. It's all one big racket. There are many operators out there who are cross licensed, or are authorized by a supervising license holder, to use two or more radio services, but they must all own a different radio for almost every individual service they use to stay legal. A single radio can be used for multiple services, but that doesn't make money for the manufacturers or generate kickbacks for the FCC. If that is somehow morally okay, then I see nothing morally wrong with someone cheating that corrupt system a little bit, just as long as they're not creating interference for other legal operators.

So in short you can get a visit from the FCC for using a UV5R on the GMRS frequencies and you will end up missing the most important meal of the day...you've been warned, use a UV5R on the GMRS frequencies at your own risk. -- Tim

at least he didn't slap you with a pair of tactical shorts on the back of the head. Im sure that'd hurt! Hope he didn't forget to cover the satellite dish in peanut butter. Next time tell him to only take the crappy serial, Did he steal all your pokamon too? Ask them to vacuum your ps5 for you next time.

I saw at least 2 Radio Shacks that were still open this fall. 1 I Idaho Falls, ID I think. Maybe these were independently owned, never took the signs down. Surprised

I miss the before cell phones radio shack. Back then they stocked the shelves and would help you. After cell phones all they had were cell phones and we're always busy turning on cell phones so you couldn't buy anything even if it was available.

Freedom isn't always as broad as people assume. Should everyone be "free" to switch on Chinese-made radios that interfere with your cellphone or Wifi because they didn't "need a license"? Obviously SOME regulations keep things orderly.
