ROFLMAO! GOD, you people are NUTS! 😀"We're going 15 knots and trying not to vomit". Thats the spirit! 😀 With this much swearing, Nemo's first word might just as well be F**K. Watch out, Mommy! FIFTEEN KNOTS ON ONE REEF! I still want doors but... FIFTEEN KNOTS ON ONE REEF!!!!!!!!!!!!! DAYEM, that thing is fast. (Edit: Just saw on the video it's 7kt on one reef, but still fast. YES, I always comment as I watch! 🙂) NV doesn't have autopilot, does it? (Edit: just read in another reply that you do!) Would you recommend a video from your archive to see what kind of systems you have? I also wonder if any winches are electrical. I'm pretty sure none is hydraulic. AND do you have an ENGINE? I honestly don't know if racing yachts have them these days. Back in the day they used to seal them off for the race. Now... who knows, maybe they all run on something electric. You removed all balast tanks, BUT looks like you kept the original mast. Is that... safe? How does it behave under full sails... or have you tried? 🙂 You might have answered all that in a previous video which I unfortunately didn't watch but still curious. 🙂
Heyhey so sorry for the slow reply. Thanks for the fun comment :) No we don't have any electric or hydraulic winches, we'd like to install some coffee grinders but haven't got round to it yet. Yes we have an engine but it's very old and very small (38hp). We're ideally looking to upgrade it soon... need to find a sponsor ;) Yes we chatted to the builder of the boat Nandor Fa about the ballast tanks, and he said that with our 4.5m draft, we don't need the ballast for sailing we'd be doing. However we are keeping some of the ballast tanks - which we explain briefly in our walk through tour we released recently. Under full sail she's very powerful but agile. I hope that's answered most of the questions for now :) keep them coming!
If you let the boat sail over its hull speed it will become more stable and comfortable and than you go faster than the waves so they dont fill the cockpit from behind
Good question! We’ve found a couple of 2nd hand jibs we’re keen on from SailExchange and have new main sail planned with Zoom Sails… we’re hoping to have them in a few months time before we start the Indian Ocean crossing 🤞🥳
Super Video👍👍 Yes, I hope you can get new Sails, these are made for racing, I think you will have to find a material, which can stay longer in sun, for cruising 👍👍
Even under greatly reduced sail it's clear how fabulous the Open 66 hull is. I've sailed one under white sails in flatter water, a steady 20 knots. Offshore is where the length of the sleek hull, massive depth of the keel make for swift boat even under reduced sail.
I really enjoy your channel and I know it's not much given how much sails for a yacht the size of NV cost but I hope this little bit helps. Can I also ask that you stop referring to NV as an Open 66. NV is a modified Open 60. Cheers.
Thanks a lot David, this is really appreciated! I guess Open 66 is just a little more concise than Modified Open 60... Can we ask what is it about Open 66 that you don't like? Can you think of another way we could put it? Maybe mini maxi?
@@SailingNV an Open 60 is a specific class, aka IMOCA. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMOCA_60) There is no such thing as an Open 66 and referring to a yacht design or class as an Open 66 is just wrong. You wrote a great article for Sailing Magazine, "Cruising in an Open 60 Racer", in which you outline the history of NV as an Open 60 built for the Vendee Globe and how she was modified with an extra 6 feet in length added. When she competed in the RSHYR as Broomstick she was listed as a "Modified 66". As someone who closely follows the Open 60 racing circuit maybe I'm just triggered by this more than the average viewer.
It looks like you are doing great Timo the boat is fast and wet old sails blow out and a green crew living the life and solo is great making good speed its not called a open boat for nothing keep doing it your channel is real and great not cruising moving at racing speed keep on
We sailed non stop from Fiji to Saumlaki indonesia on our 38ft catamaran last year. We had 25+ kts almost the whole way with big swells coming from the south. The autopilot earned its keep on that passage! It looks like your autopilot is working hard also!
The surfing Mac Gyuvers and crew. Awesome. Can you do (another?) room tour of NV? I have difficulties to Imagine how such a large crew can live on your boat. 👍
Congratulazioni, ben fatto. Good morning to all the NV crew. I have to admit that the entire ticket to Indonesia was British, your wife surpassed EVERYONE. There was one who vomited noodle soup. What happened to you Maximo Decimus Meridio, you were like a fish on a platform, dead and with your eyes open. A round of applause also for your son's cabin boy. P.S. The passage was intense, that NV cuts and devours the sea. At the end of the day everything is fun. Congratulations, well done. 😂
Glad to see you guys are finally able to really take off!! Thanks for the surfing footage, transported me right back on board. De groeten to Stephan from a fellow Belgian!
Is there a F in awsome 😂 that is a great sail area for your trip, new crew , limited experience, gentle on the auto pilot , to get that 10 knots time wants is alot more breakages. Whats your new plan if suez is a no go. Maybe new sails with in Thailand. ? ❤
Hahaha yeah I agree, that was plenty sail area for that moment in time. we’re hoping to import sails into Indonesia before our Indian Ocean crossing later this year 🤞🥳
@@davidwarnes5158 i know the one you mean… we did contact him but didn’t hear back… maybe I should try again… but we’ve found some good 2nd hand options with Sail Exchange in Aus and have new main planned with Zoom Sails
