Omg the scene where the homeless guy brought them to his shelter and he said she’s never come here in 15 years and she busted down the door I was crying 😂
It connects back to what Tess said in the beginning of the film. Women have to be more careful in situations while men like AJ (and to a lesser extent Keith) usually waltz in doing whatever they want because they don't have that fear.
Also, cinematography. Holy shit it was wild for a horror movie. Felt very claustrophobic. And they did a lot with foreground and background giving the illusion of security when something can be behind any corner or off in the distance
Two shots stuck with me. The panning of the houses as Tess looked out from the patio. Also, the mother blending in with the walls as she approached AJ underground. Beautifully directed.
@@jacksonscott690 The two shots that stuck with me the most were: 1. When Tess first discovers and walks into the hidden door in the basement. It's a really low shot all the way down to her shoes, and she's walking into the dark with the basements light behind her. Beautiful contrast in the lighting, it's symbolic of her leaving safety, and just looks really cool! I'd totally use that shot as a wallpaper. 2. When Frank (the fucked incestuous father of 'The Mother') walks into his house. The camera lens is incredibly wide, coupled with that 6:9 aspect ratio made for a really trippy looking shot of him walking away from the front door to the basement. It was just comfortable, it made him look huge and imposing. Despite the house being normal sized, that shot made it feel really claustrophobic. Loved it!
What's impressive to me is that Barbarian is a movie with an original story. Not based on any existing IP or remakes, just fully from the filmmaker's head so in any way, Hollywood still make good original movies. Better support it or else we won't get that much like this anymore
Hollywood is doing Good with there Horror movies latey from this movie to bodies bodies bodies and Fall and even Beast not to mention Nope Horror movies are doing Great job at the cenema right now
This was a fun horror movie. One of those you go back to on a rainy night. Justin Long was fkng great in this. Always have enjoyed his work in horror. In the theater where I was watch this, he had everyone laughing and everyone was very much gasping. Definitely a must watch for horror fans. Loved the camera shots to make this house an unsettling character in itself.
Zach Creggor was one of the main characters in the hilarious sketch show The Whitest Kids You Know, and it's amazing to me that he's branching out after all these years.
WKUK is about to put out an animated comedy called Mars. Zach and gang have been working on it for while and doing streams on Twitch to raise money for it. Zach and the rest of group (RIP Trevor btw) wrote, directed, and star in it. It’s basically done at this point. They’re just looking for a distributor.
This is one of the first horror movies I've seen in a while where even though the characters still made stupid decisions, it was really fun how they executed it and I didn't get annoyed.
"It was really fun" really should be the bar that movies chase. I've seen several B movies with really, unashamedly dumb characters and I also didn't really care or notice it much because I was having so much fun. Pretty long way of me saying "I should see this movie because I would probably like it." lol
I think that was the intention behind the movie. Its about subverting expectations when characters follow basic cliches. Like you go in thinking it is gonna be a solid horror movie and you come out having a very wild experience 😂
Aside from being a well-made film and super entertaining, it was also honestly one of the best experiences I've ever had in a theater. The crowd reactions made it even better.
I was "that one" reacting quietly to myself during this movie at the theater last night, hope no one saw/heard me but i did react out loud many times.... "wtf???" "get the hell out" "no!!!" "oh my god!" Just a few of my many reactions... It was one hell of a fun movie... going in w/no information is recommended. 8/10
The scene where he measures the rooms with zero fear had me dying laughing because I have a friend exactly like that. When people complain about horror characters not reacting with fear in situations like that it’s just because they haven’t met those people in real life yet. My friend legit told me he was in an almost empty gym late at night when a stranger, clearly having a psychotic episode or high as hell, came in, closed the door behind him, checked all the cameras and pulled on the backdoor to the outside to check if it was locked. My friend was just like can I help you? You okay buddy? The stranger looked at the cameras again and left but my friend got up and FOLLOWED HIM! He said he wanted to make sure the guy was okay but damn boy! Call the police. This isn’t America where the cops shoot people and you’re not equipped to handle whatever that was! I’m convinced my friend will be found murdered some day because he has the terrible combination of no fear and a desire to help.
That shit sounding mad horrific as hell, i know i'd be running like hell at the sight of someone with me in an empty dark gym, friend sounds like he's too good for this world, a real shine of light.
Just saw it last night by accident. We were suppose to see Don’t worry darling and sat in the wrong theatre. By the time we figured out we were sitting in the wrong theater we were already drawn in and loved it! This movie was done very well. My wife hates horror movies but liked this one because of the storyline.
@@LewisGlenday right. Barbarian is the better movie. I personally didn’t like it though. Literally just watched it. It was pretty underwhelming tbh. Well made sure. The stupidity of the characters really made this a lame watch for me and the killer and setup makes no real sense and is completely unbelievable.
@@slartybartfast1112 The killer and the setup are completely believable when you know what twisted minds roam this earth. There are so many serial killers out there worse than what was portrayed on this screen. The storyline unravels at a perfect pacing and doesn't bluntly tell you what's going on. It leaves hints for you to use your head and figure it out yourself. That's something I appreciate a lot in movies. Perhaps you want to see more monsters and gore and don't have the patience for a slower suspense movie?
@@aliasfakename2267 The rest of the movie aside from the monster. To me it had more suspenseful moments, for example being isolated with a stranger danger in an airbnb with no one else living close. And the shots of not knowing what to expect in the dark. But I liked the other stuff too. The mystery surrounding all of this. Also the comedic part appealled to me.
"I'm sorry to keep it vague but that was the fun of the movie for me." Okay sold. This is giving me Cabin in the Woods level vibes of "Just go see the movie" and I. Love. Sht. Like. That.
Can we all just take a moment to appreciate this being a perfect example of Jeremy reviewing what he wants to review rather than what everyone demands? Like he did Kingsman ahead of Fifty Shades, Da 5 Bloods ahead of Artemis Fowl, and now this instead of Pinocchio. He'll do what he wants before being pressured by commenters and I respect the hell out of that.
Even though I do appreciate him for that, I was kinda hoping he'd eventuially tear Pinocchio a new one! That movie is getting such bad reviews I would have LOVED to see him rip it apart.
I honestly loved the first act, there was so much tension, suspense, and thriller. But then the "horror" of the third act is revealed and it's too wild and silly.
Agreed. When Bill skaarsgard wanted her to follow him further into the cave, I was thinking, “don’t, he’s a bad guy” then I realized nope, these people are idiots.
Jeremy Idk if you will see this but I just wanna let you know that you are easily my favorite RU-vidr and have been since i was 13 years old. (Im 22 now). As I've gotten older I've appreciated to hear your thoughts on anything, not just movies or entertainment. Your videos always brighten my day and I'm so thankful to have happened to stumbled upon your channel in 2013. You are a legend and you are my internet uncle lol I've never really commented anything like this but I'm early on the vid so maybe you'll see. Best wishes from a long time subscriber
Jeremy used to be my favorite movie reviewer as well, but after about 10 movies in a row that he loved that I absolutely hated I said enough was enough. Just like this movie that he seemed to love that was absolute trash to me.
I think this was the only movie I wished I saw at its premiere because I saw it on a Sunday with a kind of empty theater and I swear this is now in my top 10 horror movies of all time idc what anyone says. It was incredible
I’ve been a big fan since WKUK and I totally loved Barbarian. I hope he’s been able to enjoy himself amidst all this new attention and positive response since he well deserves it. Excited to watch Mars and can’t wait to see what else he may have in store for us in the future!
I like how she opened the secret door and said “nope” and other horror movie, they would have just walked in cluelessly, the characters didn’t make just obviously stupid decisions
As a big WKUK fan and therefore a fan of Zach Cregger I'm looking forward to seeing this movie and I'm glad to see reviewers are liking it. Also bit of a side not Zach Cregger has another movie coming out soon an animated comedy called Mars which is with the other WKUK members. It would be cool to see you review that movie as well once it releases.
you're by far the best movie reviewer on RU-vid, Jeremy. i always trust your reviews and you've never disappointed. your analysis is always on point and you never judge a movie other than critiquing it either. thank you for your service to movies and tv shows and i will always continue to watch!
I absolutely love that you made that Resident Evil comparison! I agree 100% and actually made a similar comment to my daughter. I told her it seemed more like Resident Evil than the Netflix Resident Evil series. I had a lot of RE7 vibes from this film and really enjoyed it. Great review!
Trailer did a great job setting up just enough to give you the premise but not more. Talented cast all around and I'm so glad I skipped the reviews or reading too much. As of this message it's 94% on RT. If you're a horror fan you'll most likely find it smart, tense, captivating and entertaining.
To be honest when a few people were telling me how good of a movie this was, I was, dare I say, surprised. So many movies have found the success of cheap jumpscares and ridiculous stories instead of slow burn thriller type movies that really draw you in with uncertainty and peril. I’m super excited to check this out :-)
I'm so happy I'm not the only one who thought Resident Evil. After my screening I told my friend it reminded me of RE7 in a way. Happy you dug it too Jeremy!
I loved this movie, it was such a ride! Even with some cliches, all together it was really thrilling and enjoyable, and the horror was quite intense but in a fun way, not in the bad, overwhelming way.
Funny. Brutal. Halfway through the movie it goes to some unexpected places. I thought the first hour or so was pretty damn great but for me it started to fall apart in the last 30 minutes. I still had a hell of a time. It's rare we get horror movies as fun as this. Loved Justin long haha
Yes, the end was probably the weakest part of the film, but I agree with this guy, the rest of the movie was good enough to keep me from changing my opinion of the overall experience.
This is definitely one of my favorite horror movies and haven't seen a decent horror movie in a long time. I saw nope and enjoyed it, the last really good horror movie I saw was the night house, that is fantastic and it also kind of hits me where it counts.
@@antberrios75 I agree. Black Phone was amazing. Bought the blu-ray and I've seen it about a dozen times already. It is quickly jumping up the list of my all time favorite movies. More thriller than horror, but so great on so many levels.
The Night House was really fun. It had some very clever cinematography. It didn't blow me away like The Black Phone did, but it's very enjoyable and definitely re-watchable.
You are one of the most unbiased movie reviewer on youtube and you always share your honest opinions. It would be great if you could review "The man who knew infinity". Big fan Jeremy. Cheers!
Out of all the horror movie trailers that came out a while back, this was the one that I was actually interested in and thought it looked good. Good to see it’s actually good!
Me and my friend just got back from the movie, and it was really fun. First act= Scary Second act= funny Third act= a little weak I will say the third act was slightly disappointing, but we still had fun
The guy Saw that the mom wasnt moving was like “oh shes dead” Reminds me of the last halloween movie where Michael Got jumped and they stop hitting him once he stops moving
Just saw this always like coming back and rewatching these reviews afterwords. Thanks for staying vague about it. Had just enough of a idea what I was getting into with out it giving to much away.
I loved that movie. I wasn’t really scared after the big reveal but I was still on the edge of my seat and also laughing a lot afterwards. So fun movie over all
I can not wait to see this one. I've loved WKUK since the first day they aired on FUSE in 2007. I was obsessed. I still love them. I love all their work. Zach is good people and a GREAT horror fan, I can not wait to see this. Another member of the WKUK community (we have a certain name from a certain upcoming WKUK project I shan't use here) spotted me 20 bucks to see the flick with my hubz for our 015th anniversary. Good people!
My girlfriend and I saw it yesterday. We absolutely adored Barbarian. This was Zach Cregger 's first time writing and directing something completely by himself. Before Barbarian, he'd P much exclusively done comedy in collaboration with other people, most notably, The Whitest Kids U Know
Loll the 'cheesy' parts were much welcomed after the first act. They didn't over do it at all! Had a lot of fun watching that movie. I wish I could forget it and watch it again. So good
just saw this and going through the reviews and you're first and almost everything you described is making me smile/laugh in memory of what I just saw.
I will definitely check this out. Haven't seen a single preview either. Going in blind to a decently made horror/mystery movie sounds really good right now.
Oofh, that Miss March mention hits hard. Trevor Moore was a real tragic loss, and he never got to redeem WKUK in cinema. :( One of the only celebrity deaths that bothers me to this day, to be honest.
His death was a legimate shock for me as well. With them re-releasing their old sketchs on RU-vid and then talking about them made me feel more familar with him. So then to have him ripped away felt cruel.
@@animal245533 yeah I was watching their weekly live streams. it was like 2009 all over again. it felt great to see everyone be so happy and together still. and Justin one day out of nowhere the gang was split up. Trevor leaves a hole that'll never be filled but I hope for all the success in the world for everyone from WKUK
@@Blainprime I just put together that Barbarian's director was Zach from WKUK. I wasn't familiar with his last name and was so bummed about the Trevor thing I didn't put it together until just now. I'm glad he's doing well at least, the whole gang deserves good things.
Thank you! Been looking for a critic I trust for just a “nibble”, nothing more. Love this dude! Was looking for Critical Drinker’s as well but don’t think he’s hit it yet (love him too!/but he’s trope is to kinda dissect film; best after already seen) Promoters did RIGHT here! It’s like “telling you NOTHING, just get ready for a damn good time!” Need this a LOT more often in trailers. Like Netflix?! My GOD their trailers will show the entire film. Barbarian’s was refreshing; NO CLUE what to expect
I might’ve only seen the trailer for the movie once or twice at most. I think in front of the Black Phone, and that’s about it. One of the best trailers they could’ve made for a movie like this. I was really surprised not just b/c of the movie (which was incredible), but i dont think I’ve been in a theater as packed as that movie in a long time. I kinda wished it was longer, b/c everything that happened was so investing. But at the same time its short, and sweet, and straight to the point. Easily a new cult classic.
Same here! It was such an absurd and funny thing, I think most of the audience was laughing when we got to that scene. Well, we just rolled with the craziness of it, since the movie was overall quite enjoyable
Beyond the official synopsis on Wikipedia, I didn't really know anything going in. Didn't even watch a trailer, just came across those 15 second RU-vid ads of people reacting to the movie (marketing I haven't seen in a minute!). This movie was fantastic and that lack of knowledge for me really worked when it came to the experience.
Hey Jeremy, love the vids, and I had no idea this movie was even coming out, but now it is on my watchlist. That aside, and I know you'll probably never even read this, but just in case, how's your dad doing man? I recall you mentioning him and a health scare you guys had some time ago, and I really hope he's doing alright. As someone who also takes care of an elderly relative, I wish you both all the best.
Saw this last night with no understanding of what the movie was about. Barely heard of it and was more than pleasantly surprised with how interested in the movie I was. Fully immersed. Highly recommend it
The Director of this movie, Zach Creggor also has a movie coming out with his sketch comedy troupe, Whitest Kids U Know, called Mars. It's a comedy obviously..but I'm even more excited for it now knowing Zach is a really competent director.
**SPOILERS** I enjoyed the overall message throughout the movie. Every single female mention never felt safe in any environment. From Meagan being sexually assaulted, Tess needing help from the cops but ignored her cries for help, to the serial killer’s victims and lastly “mother” the portrayed “antagonist” which in reality was quite a victim. The movie conveyed that men were the source of unreliability or the lack of safety net. From Bill’s character being persistent and temperamental not providing her the feeling of comfortability / stable environment. AJs character being selfish and inconsiderate, oblivious to what was in the rooms where he was measuring, to shooting Tess, and potentially betraying her. He denied her the sense of trust and loyalty Police men were stubborn and blissful denying her the sense of protection. What really gets me is the title of this movie “Barbarian” as the audience you’ll expect the “Mother” to be the barbarian or “uncivilized” character of the story due to the lack of social interaction but in the end of the movie she was more attached to her morality than compared to other characters like AJ, Serial Killer and the police. They are the true “Barbarians” despite being integrated into society “normally”. Overall, this movie provided not only the lack of safe environment for woman but also fit into the dynamic role that woman aren’t safe or can’t rely on men entirely. It’s a good reflection on todays society, but this movie really conveyed a good idea while providing an interesting plot and cinematography.
Yes, the real Barbarians in this film are the men. Also, it conveys the idea that women are conditioned to feel like they need to help in every situation even when they don't feel safe or even want to, they're just expected to. Great horror film with a much deeper meaning. As I was walking out of the theater this guy was joking with his buddies saying, "why the fuck was it called Barbarians? There wasn't even any Barbarians in the fucking movie!"
One of the things I notice is when Tess and Keith are discussing the dynamics between men and women. She says something like any man would stay the night and not give a second thought if a girl was the one staying at the airbnb and she let him in. Men have that “security” and that’s exactly what Justin Longs character does. He waltz in and has the “security of a man”, never thinking that he’s in any danger until it really gets serious. Really clever way of bringing “woke” stuff into a film, some people roll their eyes when you mention stuff like that but it can be a really good plot point when done correctly!
@@nukexD Exactly! I love this interpretation. It was presented in the film smoothing it didn’t feel forced or cringey. Having controversial themes and subjects scattered across the film made me appreciate this film more. The psychological horror it presented was truly amazing. Haven’t seen anything like this in a while.
@@ibonnieth2306 yeah I agree the first and second act were really good! I feel like it fell flat towards the end it could’ve been so much better, I honestly felt bad towards the inbred person.
Right like I thought Bill’s character was super sketchy and a serial killer. AJ was questioning his own morality and I thought maybe he would help her out but nope
saw it last night, wife and I loved it. The pacing is so good and the open embrace of camp at the end was the cherry on top. So many WTF moments and it just kept you engaged the entire time. Legit scary, funny, suspenseful. 10/10 for me.
I'm gutted that this currently has no release date over here in the UK! Hope we get it sooner rather than later as it does sound like a great horror/thriller flick which would be fun to see! Also, the cast is great with the lead actress not being bad, Skarsgard is always great n so is Justin Long! Can't wait to see Skarsgard in John Wick 4 next as the main overall villain going up against Keanu! Also, I really hope that we get to see Justin doing more solid horrors now as he is great in them n deserves more roles! 😊🙏
@@MrImzzz Justin Long is playing a version of Ezra Miller … he even looks like him …. He is supposed to be a spoof of him …. The fact that this is a “fox” DISNEY film is even more sauce on that cake
I went in blind and got blown away. Same with 'The Sadness' last year. Avoiding all the promotional hype is the best way to see this film. Excellent review
Enjoyed the movie 100%. I like it when characters stay consistent. Too many times and scary movies you have the timid hesitant character turn into boss level kick ass. All the characters stay true to themselves. I enjoyed the ride the whole way
I think the only question I have based on this review: Is it similar to X when after the first act the movie just becomes a complete mess that cannot redeem itself, or is this actually a good film throughly?
The first half genuinely made me uneasy, almost to the point of feeling nauseous. The secret door leading to another secret door leading to an absolute nightmare, it just felt so wrong and terrifying! I was so curious and my imagination was flying all over the place as to what the hell happened in there.
Just the fact that it’s owned by the Rodent House is the reason I won’t support it. They get none of my money. I’m guessing you weren’t aware he’s promoting a D film.
thank god i watched this review after, best to go in completely blind. Sometimes things can get ruined when you give expectations, i dont need to know how much violence is in a film and if its sparingly used or not, or particular actions characters do in the film too.
Great review, also really enjoyed this movie and went in knowing nothing about it. It got the tension-building, humor, and gore just right. A few scenes in the third act were a little off in terms of tone but weren't deal breakers. Start to finish a clockwork satisfying horror flick.
Hello Jeremy! Thank you for giving a good score to the project as a whole and have enjoyed the movie! If you have watched carefully you might have seen yours truely in one of the scenes. Cheers!
Reminds me of The Night House from last year. Unpredictable and slightly original horror thriller made on a lean budget. You know the premise, but you don't know exactly where it's going as it juggles different horror/thriller subgenres. There's at least one released every year. They're like small treasures you discover outside the mainstream films (which are still good in their own right).
I’m really shocked with how much positive things I’ve heard about this. Went in hyped and while the first half was really well done, it tanked after Justin Long was introduced. The whole theatre was laughing at every moment meant to be scary.
this movie had an identity crisis. I thought I was about to see a really great psychological horror and it turned into a dark comedy, especially that ridiculous ending.
I absolutely agree!! So many confusing points. I went into the movie for the horror not a stupid comedy which lost the tension. This movie isn’t good and idk what crack people were smoking during that second half.
I completely agree with you. My theater viewing was packed an no one seemed that excited about it or scared lol. I felt cheated by the trailer in that it presented horror.
I agree. The first act was phenomenal then I felt the rest was rather dysfunctional and I feel like the odd one out who didn’t really care for it as a whole and ended up disappointed
Just watched this today, figured It would be a good Halloween movie and WOW. I wish I was better with words because this was spectacular. The jumps between perspective and tone, the legitimate surprises that you don’t see coming. The suspicions that end up being wrong. Crazy visuals. I just thought this was a standout horror movie and I love how it was executed
Very interesting movie. I didn’t love it coming out the theater, but after digesting it and picking it apart in my head I actually really liked it. LOVE the stuff with Justin Longs character and the scene where he’s measuring the basement tunnels.
Finally saw it and _loved_ it. I was shocked by the major tonal shifts the film takes... and more shocked that it always worked perfectly. Like, the first half-hour may very well be one of the most frightening things I've seen in a long time. It honestly could work as a self-contained short film. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. It's so well-handled, so eerie and so tension-filled, I was literally looking over my shoulder in the theater, even though I knew I was safe. That almost never happens to me. Then, after the big twist/reveal of what's going on, around the time Justin Long's character is introduced, the film starts to introduce a lot of wild and sarcastic humor, insane twists and turns, and some scenes that were borderline cartoonish in execution... and it 100% worked. It always felt organic and like it was part of the same universe. And despite how insane and hilarious the movie became... it was still consistently creepy, because the threat still felt very real. So even when I was laughing out loud, I was still quite tensed up. And there were scenes where in the span of 30 seconds, I'd gasp in shock, burst out laughing at the humor, then immediately cringe again in fear. For me, this was easily an _Awesometacular_ movie. It was just so fun and enjoyable that I couldn't give it anything else. Definitely one I'll pick up on Blu-Ray or 4K. Over the last ten years, the horror genre has found a second life. Between great mainstream creepshows like _The Conjuring,_ wickedly dark overseas films like _The Babadook,_ subtle arthouse horror like _The Witch_ and movies like _Barbarian..._ it feels like horror has never been better!
