May I recommend another great and unique Indian movie? 😊 Jigarthanda Double X. On Letterboxd it was number 4 highest rated action/adventure movie of 2023. It's a gangster movie with dark humour and political themes + a meta approach in order to create an ode to cinema. It's from Kollywood (Tamil speaking, the other big industry of south India alongside Tollywood). It's a prequel to Jigarthanda (2014). It's only very loosely connected so no need to see the 2014 (I'd still recommend it because it's great too, but it's on a smaller scale and not as mind blowing as the 2023 one)

It was a touch a little over-the-top goofy for me in places but the heart of the movie was so good that it didn't any more than the CGI animals did. One thing that struck me was how much of the story was told through the lyrics of the music (friendship montage and the big battle sequence) and my god did it work for me. This and Top Gun were the two best movies I've seen this year and they were both a breath of fresh air (ironic in the case in Top Gun).

RRRs biggest success is its sincerity. Unlike Hollywood where these days movies have this trashy cynical sense of humour and a total lack of commitment, this movie gloriously prides itself in its themes and story without ever going one step back and being “Hehe Just kidding btw pointing the obvious so that everyone can relate” bullshit that marvel movies in particular have become known for and which is why this movie is so memorable and epic. Yeah it's really OTT, but there's no winking irony, it's just unabashed fun made with real passion. It's quite hard to describe the tone, because it's not naive to it's own silliness, it knows punching a tiger in the face with a burning torch is ridiculous, but there's no post modern distance, it's in love with the spectacle of it. It's like going straight to post irony without hitting the irony bit first.

@@SunilKumar-vw6ol I think I phrased it wrong. The point of my argument wasn’t to show that the action scenes weren’t creative. It’s just that everybody is freaking out about how RRR’s musical numbers are so unique, and that it is completely different from anything that we have seen before. It is creative, and the fight scenes and action scenes were choreographed extremely well. But, the story beats that the film covers are not completely off you compare other Indian films to it, such as the musical numbers and the over the top nature of the film. But, don’t get me wrong, I really liked this film because it did not waste time like Pushpa and KGF with it’s dumb romantic subplot.

The funny thing regarding the CGI, the opening disclaimer aside, I never felt like they were trying to make strictly realistic animals. It felt more like they were animals raised to the level of forces of nature, mythical beasts like you might expect to see on a tapestry, powerful creatures as envisioned by minds that had heard of the terror of a tiger attack or a stampede but never seen one in the flesh. In that regard, I felt they were entirely successful.

The thing about this movie was we get tons of amazing and creative action sequences from the beginning. Like at start a guy like winter soldier jumps into a crowd of hundreds and beat the shit out of them. Then a guy escapes a wolf, fights a tiger and captures it. And then comes the bridge scene. Meeting with best frnd for 1st time under a bridge hanging with ropes while the river set on fire. And it's just 40 mints into the film. And then the title card drops. RRR!

Now I’m kind of sad that I missed this in theaters. I didn’t know much at all about it, but decided to give it a shot anyway because the trailers made it look really entertaining…only to find out when I got to the theater that ticket prices for it were like double the price of a regular ticket. And for someone that got use to going on Tuesdays when tickets were half-off, that gave me enough pause to stop me from getting a ticket then. Sigh…

If something is twice the price you expected, in a place you don't expect it to be, that's all the more reason to check it out. @@simonthomas1878 Well the thing there though was that at the time I hadn’t heard any buzz whatsoever about it, and tickets weren’t exactly selling out, or even (as I saw from the reserved seating part at a self-checkout) being sold at a higher rate than other movies were at the time. There were also some odd quirks with tickets, as they were sold for either Hindi or some other language I hadn’t heard of…I believe it was the language the movie was actually shot it, but yet for some reason the prices for those showings were even _higher._ I do remember ending up asking the manager on shift at the time about it, and he told me that ticket prices would come down to normal prices by following week, so I decided to wait until then…but for some reason that I don’t remember I didn’t go the next week. I think either something came up, or showtimes for it got drastically cut back and I couldn’t make any of the available ones due to work. Or maybe it was only the Hindi prices came down but not the native language ones and I got annoyed enough by it to not go? Whatever reason it was, by the third week/week after that one, it had already left my local theaters. :/

It’s overwhelming to see an Indian film being appreciated at a global level. To my non-Indian friends, here’s some additional information about the movie which will make you appreciate it even more. Apart from the recurring fire-water theme playing out in the movie, there’s a mythological theme as well. Of Ramayana. As per the mythology… 1. Lord Rama is an incarnation of God Vishnu. Sita is his wife. 2. Hanuman is a staunch devotee of Lord Rama and both were the best of friends. The reason I told you this is because Hanuman is the son of God Vayu (God of winds) and Bheem (the strongest Pandava, Google Mahabharat to know more) is the son of God Vayu as well, albeit from a different time, so both were kinda brothers and similar in qualities. The movie celebrates Rama & Hanuman friendship. 3. Lord Rama is a master of long range weapons while Bheem/ Hanuman are masters of close range hand weapons relying on brute force. In the movie, you see Ram using mostly long range weapons like guns and bow while Bheem relies on his brute force (arms) or close range weapons like bike ;) 4. Hanuman saved Lord Rama’s younger brother from dying from poisoning. Similarly, Bheem saves Ram in the movie from the snake poison 5. Hanuman destroyed Lanka (modern day Sri Lanka) with fire in an attempt to rescue Sita who was abducted by Ravan and Hanuman had promised Ram to bring back Sita. Analogous to Malli’s abduction in the movie and Bheem’s promise to Seetha to bring back Ram and then the destruction of the British general’s territory in the rescue attempt. 6. Lord Rama also faced “Van Vasa” (remain in the forest aloof from the world) based on the request from one of his step mothers. Same with Ram in the movie, who hid himself away from the world and left his tribe to fulfil his last promise to his father and made several sacrifices in pursuit of the same. 7. Temples show up at crucial times having deities corresponding to the main characters in the scene like… a. Bheem is at Shiva temple when Ram comes to him in poisoned state (Bheem is Hanuman who is considered as an incarnation of God Shiva as well; God Shiva also has Vasuki (God of serpents) wrapped around his neck plus Shiva had, at a point of time, drank poison post “Samudra Manthan” to protect the world… complements the poison theme in the scene) b. Bheem learns the truth about Ram from Seetha at the Ram Sita temple, lovely camera work in this scene focusing on the deities at crucial moments c. In the last act, Ram uses the Saffron clothes and bow & arrows taken from the Rama temple Fun fact, the Indian festival of lights, Diwali, is to celebrate Ram’s win over Raavana and his return back from Van vasa. These are some parallels which I could make out from the movie. I am sure there will be more. If you want to learn more, please Google to following key words, Ramayana, Hanuman & Bheem relation, Raavana, Bheem Mahabharat, Lanka dahan Hanuman, Sita abduction, Sanjivni

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s movies are also worth exploring. I recommend BajiRao Mastani.

It is definitely smile worthy to hear Jeremy Jahns say " Awesometacular" this year, 'cause some movies today are middle-of-the-road, but glad to say, he found one that was worthy to say that word

I am obsessed with this movie in a way that reminds me of the first time I saw the original Star wars or Lord of the Ring films. This is awesometacular!

Indian movies are something else, they're their own entire feeling and I absolutely love it. I was first introduced to Bollywood in Geography Class in Highschool, we reached the India part of the class and our teacher decided it would be interesting to show us Slum Dog Millionaire and it was a amazing story that stuck with me even after all these years. But for the life of me, both I and my teacher don't understand the dancing and dance offs but I find them hilarious

Slim dog millionaire is not an Indian film, it's a Hollywood film depicting India and Indian culture in American/White lens

This was part of the draw when I used to watch Smallville. Lex luthor and Clark Kent are friends but all of us who grew up with these characters know how this ends up and we're waiting for that moment. This movie had that kind of suspense but cranked up to 11.

Action scenes that are framed up so we actually see them are a thing of beauty! Too many movies out there with badass action scenes that we can barely see because for some reason they thought it'd be cool if the camera jumped around like a dog shittin razor blades lol
