The greatest horse I've seen in my lifetime. He wasn't even tired after the race. Would have easily won the triple crown without the injury. One of the greatest racehorses of all time.
I missed one Derby live from 1981 to 2010. Barbaro was the best Derby winner I saw in that time frame. I have no doubt he would have been the missing Triple Crown winner ...
I know I have commented many times on this video. That is how much I love Barbaro ❤ I look forward to the next 20 times in a row I watch this race. I love you Barbaro ❤🌹
My favorite horse forever.. 2018 and I will always watch this ❤😢 Barbaro ran the fastest last quarter mile since Secretariat! He was our triple crown winner. He blew this field away effortlessly. He could of won by 10 easily, it was just a matter of turning him loose.
He was our greatest hope for a Triple Crown winner we have had in many years. I know he would have taken it had he not broken down. I know he would have. No one could touch him. No doubts, he would have taken it. I still am in awe watching his races. I have a tribute corner at my house for him. A whole collection of Barbaro items and mementos. I miss him, still get tears. He was some horse.
Samuel Pérez García The Only reason Barbaro wasn't the runaway favorite for the Derby was that he wasn't tested. But after the Derby, where he completely destroyed some very capable horses, it felt like he was destined to be the next Secretariat.
MegaLlamalord I have seen a few horses in the exact same situation. Not one went on to become the next Secretariat. Or even the next Affirmed. There's simply nothing certain about Barbaro winning the TC.
Barbaro, in the words of the great Tom Durkin "sublime". I was at the Preakness that year to see him. We all know what happened that day, one which I will never forget. I don't know if I tell myself this to make myself feel better about the whole situation but I am a firm believer that things happen for a reason. In retrospect, it was no foregone conclusion that had he not gotten injured Barbaro would have won the Preakness, Bernardini ran one hell of a race and was one hell of a good racehorse. Being realistic who knows what would have happened. Instead Barbaro was injured. His undefeated record, his "sublime performance" in the Kentucky Derby and our imagination thinking up the what ifs have only added to his legend. Barbaro's inspirational and courageous story following his injury may have done just as much if not more for his fans and the sport then a Triple Crown would have, I like to think it has certainly done more for his fellow equine athletes. Following Barbaro's injury( and also the unfortunate and sudden death of Eight Belles years later), the horse racing industry finally began to take a hard look at horse safety.Tracks began to re-examine their track surfaces, many changing of to artificial racing surfaces. An enormous amount of awareness has been created and research done on new medicines and medical practices especially in regard to laminitis. Barbaro's legacy will always be one of greatness to me both on and off the track he will be remembered for having the heart of a champion.
RIP Babe. I love and miss you so much. im very greatful to live right across the street from ur grave. and every derby I put a dozen roses on ur statue and grave. we miss you
JumptoSoar1307 wow my aunt lives in Kentucky but she's elder now that's awesome of you to do that he definitely deserves this such strength and heart if only he didn't get leminititis I'm sure he'd somehow be here with us 14 in april
JumptoSoar1307 do me a favor I'll be forever grateful put one down for me signed love to you and rest your weary head your with god and Jesus love always dani💗
And here comes Barbaro! The undefeated Barbaro! He comes up on the outside and takes the lead as the field turns for home in the Kentucky Derby, Barbaro turns it on! Barbaro fell to his knees coming out of the starting gate but still had that race.
A very special Thoroughbred. Barbaro arguably had the biggest 💓 in racing history. He touched all of are hearts, Barbaro will NEVER be forgotten. Greatness! What a awesome champion....
We miss you boy......Every year around the Derby, I go back to watch one of the best Derby runs ever. Forever in our hearts .We love you Barbaro...Run free :(
Thank you for posting this video. Barbaro was such an amazing horse. Even after he broke his leg, he continued to help us learn more about Laminites. Barbaro was so Brave. RIP Beloved Barbaro.
I completely, totally, agree with you. Right as Edgar finally let him go Durkin was on it. Barbaro, poised in the clear as they move into the far turn... step by step .... then... "and HERE comes Barbaro, the undefeated Barbaro comes up on the outside and he takes the lead... as camera pulls back and pans ... beautiful... "as the field turns for HOME in the KD Barbaro TURNS IT ON !! .. and it is ALL Barbaro in a SUBLIIIME performance" he runs away from them ALL !" My God. it's perfect.
Watching this is so exhilarating, yet so heartbreaking at the same time... Highly doubt he ever fired all cylinders in any of his races, he almost certainly would have been a Triple Crown winner had things not gone the way they did... still to this day such a special and talented horse.
Exactly a year ago we lost a Champion and a friend. We watchedhim grow and learn to love what he was bred to do. He went onto win many G1 races including the KY Derby. Undeafeatedin 6 races and was unable to finish one. His race of life began. after 8 months of fighting for his life, Barbaro's life came to an end. We will always remember him
i still can't watch this race without crying. i loved him derby day and had him to win. i have no doubt he would have won the triple crown had he not broken down two weeks later. so brave and so so sad. rip barbaro.......
no matter how many times i watch this race it still gives me chills to hear the announcer and watch barbaro pull away from the field....R>I>P you will always be in my heart...No horse will ever match up to you.
No easy trip on the rail, a stumble at the gate, this was a true performance of talent, not "luck" he was the Triple Crown we never got to see, I know this in my heart.....I have not enjoyed a Kentucky Derby since....
2:03 is my favorite part of this race -- it's when Barbaro has his ears perked forward when he's about to come off the turn for home... without a doubt, that horse KNEW he had the Derby won at that point... RIP Barbaro
Just imagine what would have happened if Barabaro didnt break early from the gate. Would he have been a triple crown winner? I surely think so. Look at how easily he beet everybody in the derby. He could've been up there in the hall of fame but even though he's gone he is still a great horse and never forgotten...
Barbaro was one of the best race horses of the world, no doubt about it. Its a disapointment that he died... he had won the peakness if he wasn't get injured.
I got goosebumps watching this replay-just wish they had taken Barbaro out of the gate in the Preakness when he kicked it! I still remember cashing the tri, wheeling Steppenwolfer for second & third. That's me posing with a statue of the great Northern Dancer at Woodbine:-)
I remeber when I was young, my Dad showed me the cover of the newspaper. Barbaro on the cover, with his broken leg. My Grandma watched Barbaro's progress. We all hoped he would be okay. But one day. my grandma said they put him down. I was devestated. I hope he's happy in heaven.
A tremendous horse. He had the speed and stamina to win the TC and I believe he would of won it. I was at the Preakness when he broke his leg about 25 yds down the track from where we were sitting. You could of heard a pin drop when it happened. I actually saw people crying. It was terrible. RIP Barbaro...a champion!!!!
Barbaro had it all,an even temperament, and tremendous ability that was good on BOTH turf and dirt. In fact when I first started following him in his 2 yr old year, the buzz was about how good he was and if he could run on the main track, well that question was answered emphatically!
What a horse probably one of the greatest of all time. I dont think ive ever seen such a turn of foot out of a thoroughbred coming into the lane. SUPERSTAR!!!
the second paragraph of what you say here is so right on the mark. You watch as Durkin spots the move of Barbaro and the you hear the roar of the crowd build and Durkin unfolds the finish of this race perfectly.... "and Barbaro TURNS IT ON...... then "it's ALL Barbaroa!!" I also like Gary's recap of the race, Edgar has him forwardly placed..... and just before explosive move that Barbaro was actually pulling Edgar out of the saddle...." I still cry when I watch this.
Man...why did Barbaro die? I bet everything that he was going to be the TC winner in 2006. At the Derby, he was STILL pulling away when he crossed the finish line and the field he was up against wasn't a weak field either. He went in 6-0 I believe. He was the modern-day Secretariat.
What an amazing horse Barbaro was, full of heart and so devoted..... His spirit will live on forever and with every race that races at Churchill downs Barbaro will be there, racing right along side them... ~*~*Ripley*~*~
Holy hell. Edgar never even had to touch him in the stretch. It was basically like Edgar: "hey buddy, ready to run faster?" Barbaro: "yep, time to win"
Barbaro was going to win the TC that year. His run was just amazing period. The field had some notable names (Lawyer Ron, Jazil, Bluegrass Cat, Flashy Bull etc.) Prado did not use the whip not once!!!! Barbaro turned it on when he knew he had to an he blew the 20-horse field away. Once Barbaro got to the outside, it was over! He was still pullin away after the finish line!!!!!! A true champion. R.I.P big man.
He was so amazing and no doubt would have won the Triple Crown. I still can't watch the Preakness to this day. He reminded me so much of Secretariat who will always hold my heart and his record of 31 lengths at the Belmont. Tomorrow is the 50th anniversary. I know Barbaro would have won. Just don't want any hurt. ❤️💙💔🙏
Barbaro's story is the most tragic TB story ever. (what happened to Phar Lap is a close second...) He loved to run so much, and ended up reduced to hobbling on his wrecked legs. His desire to live was as brave as was his running style.
I don't think I'll ever get over the aching feeling for this horse, and Durkin's call as he first says "and HERE comes Barbaro"... and "Barbaro turns it on.." and it's ALL Barbaro.... in a SUBLIME performance !!"
I follow a lot of sports, and I have to say there is nothing more exciting than the final stretch of a Triple Crown horse race. It's just heartbreaking that every now and then tragedy strikes, as in the case of Barbaro in the Preakness and others we have seen. The sport is a great sport, but the dark side of it is indeed sad.
@decroo21, Bernardini turned out to be one of the best conventional dirt colt's in America that I've seen for many years, and has also become about the best and most sought after young sire in the business, too. That said, what Barbaro accomplished in his career spanning a very short amount of time is equally impressive. It would've been tough handicapping out a race with both Barbaro and Bernardini in the field. Like splitting hairs!!
R.I.P. BARBARO!!!! Forvever in my heart! I will Always Remember and Honor Your Greatness. You inspired me and gave me the will to fight cancer, pain and LIVE!!! Thankyou! I'll see you in Heaven when I loose my fight.
And here comes Barbaro! The UNDEFEATED Barbaro! He comes up on the outside and he takes the lead as the filed turns for home in the Kentucky Derby Barbaro turns it on! Got to be the best Derby race, if not the best race period. ~*~*Ripley*~*~
"¿El Derby de Kentucky? Aún no se ha creado un calificativo para describir su grandeza" José Gregorio Guillot, comentarista hípico y productor radial venezolano.
Barbaro was a great horse, but best Derby was '09 when Calvin Borrel took Mind The Bird to the rail and blew away the field. That was the greatest move in horse racing.
watching you as you were in fifth place turn that corner god and Jesus was even proud of you sweet heart shown heart speed skill finesse may you rest in peace with no pain
@21Sarabi Barbaro had The Secretariat Factor: GREAT LOOKS - Barbaro was a Beautiful, Charismatic horse - he had Star Power, like Sec. He won the KD Dominantly (like Sec). That's why he reminds people of Sec. But was gifted with the RAW PHYSICAL STRENGTH needed to go the distance. Sec was a Beast.
Barbaro was a champ, nothing could stand in his way, nothing could bring him down but the accident,he ran undeafeated, barbaros jockey was in shock when he had to pull him up out of the group at the preakness and was upset and he went to see him while he was in recovery, when he ran he flew ~~~~R.I.P~~~~
And here comes Barbaro! The UNDEFEATED Barbaro! He comes up on the outside and he takes the lead as the field turns for home in the Kentucky Derby Barbaro turns in on! ~*~*Ripley*~*~
If only thing's had not gone so tragically wrong for Barbaro in the Preakness. 2006, IMO, could've produced the most competitive head to head rivalry since Sunday Silence vs. Easy Goer in 89' in the shape of Barbaro vs. Bernardini. Both 2 of the most talented American conventional dirt horses to come down the pike in ages. Both's career record's speak for themselves. Even Barbaro's with a limited amount of race. But look at what both he and Bernardini won during their careers. JMO.
Was a great mix of two legendary horses was undefeated like Seattle Slew but had the power of Secretariat without a doubt would have been the 12th winner of the Triple Crown.
I always thought he would take the triple crown. I've not felt that way before about any contender in tha last 20+ years. He had a special magic. No doubt, one of the best Derby runs ever. Like many, my heart broke in the Preakness, you knew it was bad. I thank the Jackson's for giving him a shot at life. Most seeing that xray would have put him down immediately. They owned him but we all loved him and always will. A true champion, on and off the track.
@nin12dog Completely agree. I dont think we will ever see another Sec. He was just a phenom but I could certainly see some of him in Barbaro. I certainly wish I could've watched him more. He was undefeated going into the Preakness. I don't know if he could pull off the TC due to his size but his fight and drive was unmatched.
When Barbaro broke through the gate in the Preakness too early his fate was sealed. He was not going to when that race, he shouldve been scratched and rested for the Belmont .
~And here comes Barbaro! The undefeated Barbaro! Comes up on the outside and he takes the lead as the field turns for home in the Kentucky Derby Barbaro turns it on!~ ~*~*Ripley*~*~
Mine That Bird. There are many GREAT moves. Sec's Preakness - wherein he moved from LAST to FIRST (going WIDE) on the first tight turn at Pimlico was referred to by Beyer as a 'suicide move'. A lesser horse might have destroyed himself. But Sec did this with grace & aplomb. FROM FIRST to LAST (in 180 yards, I think), Sec grabbed the lead! A BRILLIANT MOVE by Sec, who made this decision on his own - a genius racehorse! - Ronnie T was a d#m.n#d shrewd jockey - he let Sec make the decision.
I don't know if Barbaro would have beaten Secretairiat but i do know that if he hadnt hurt himself he almost certainly would have take the Triple Crown that year.
