KV-2 was essentially pointless in tank-to-tank battles, as it was howitzer on tracks, designed to bust heavy fortifications as direct replacement of aging t-35. During first weeks of conflict, some of them didn't even have HE rounds, supplied only with anti-concrete rounds.

@@kiepyon1: "Germans 1942: we have tigers" Yes, they will win the Battle at Stalingrad!! Germans than in 1942: Oh, shit, this is Goebbels Fake Propaganda! We have no Tigers on Easten Front in 1942! Tiger I Combat history First actions: Eager to make use of the powerful new weapon, Hitler ordered the vehicle be pressed into service months earlier than had been planned. A platoon of four Tigers went into action on 23 September 1942 near Leningrad. Operating in swampy, forested terrain, their movement was largely confined to roads and tracks, making defence against them far easier. Many of these early models were plagued by problems with the transmission, which had difficulty handling the great weight of the vehicle if pushed too hard. It took time for drivers to learn how to avoid overtaxing the engine and transmission, and many broke down. The most significant event from this engagement was that one of the Tigers became stuck in swampy ground and had to be abandoned. Captured largely intact, it enabled the Soviets to study the design and prepare countermeasures. The 503rd Heavy Panzer Battalion was deployed to the Don Front in the autumn of 1942, but arrived too late to participate in Operation Winter Storm, the attempt to relieve Stalingrad. It was subsequently engaged in heavy defensive fighting in the Rostov-on-Don and adjacent sectors in January and February 1943.

Nope, it was most likely a KV1 because of the ammo capacity, the KV2 wouldn't hold out for 24 hours and its turret rotated too slowly. The 6th man was likely a surviving commander of some other tank that the crew picked up - among the 6 buried bodies, two had officer belts and insignia. The KV1 was roomy enough for one extra person.

A fun fact is: As a world of tanks player, there is a medal in the game that's called the "Raseiniai heroes medal". If you are playing the PC version you need to destroy 14 out of 15 enemy vehicles with your own to get it, while in the blitz version you need to destroy the whole enemy team (7 vehicles), I believe. So they pay homage for the battle in a way.

I think there was a picture of said lone tank at Raseiniai... ...and that was the Kliment Voroshilov 2 tank (the massive 150mm-gun KV-2 tank). The bodies of the crew that had piloted the KV tank were taken out by German infantrymen and buried with full honors by the side of the road (the Germans were impressed by their show of endurance and strength given their odds). Six crew members laid there (three never identified). The fate of the battered KV is unknown, though most likely scrapped.

Modern battles seems less suited since the frontline spans across countries
@geechyguy3441
@geechyguy3441 4 года назад
@@feryth He pulled it off pretty well though, as he has done in the past with naval battles. Showing the frontline as a whole (1:40) is still achievable with modern warfare and serves no problem. Zooming in on the battle is where the issues kinda come into play. For land battles though if he wants to show how the progress of the whole battle is going than what he did at 3:17 seems to work pretty efficiently, although I didn't quite understand what each box represented but through time I could get used to it. So I think the largest problem is determining how to best utilize shots like the one at (7:40), since the frontline stretches miles across when and where specifically shall we zoom in to show the battle from the closest angle which is much easier in medieval videos? Well just like in medieval battles, in modern battles certain events are more significant and seem to stick out. In this video Baz mainly wanted to show the last stand of the KV tank, the battle of Raiseinai was pretty insignificant in the whole grand scheme of things but we needed background on the story of the KV tank so it worked well. Now if he made a video about a battle in general, like for example a famous one like D-Day or Stalingrad. He could split it up into parts, choosing to zoom in on the most intense action moments of the battle like the crossing of the volga for Stalingrad or certain sectors of Omaha Beach for D-Day. Showcasing modern warfare definitely requires longer videos though. But I think it's perfectly achievable, he doesn't even need to cover famous battles as it never was really his thing.

The Soviets, on the other hand, weren't standing idle in the arms race. They would soon unleash a powerful new weapon against the Germans; while its armor is not as thick as the KV-series tanks, the T-34/76 sported superior reliability, simple and fairly cheap design, an equally powerful cannon, and most importantly sloped armor.

@VRichardsn

@Dwarov 1 A lone and immobile tank is very, very easy to be stalked upon by infantry. A typical KV-1 (going with the video's author theory of it being the most likely) has 3 machine guns: one coaxial, one in the hull and one in the back of the turret. For starters, tanks are almost blind and deaf. That alone is a huge handicap. Now, the machine guns can track only two targets at once: one with the hull machine gun and one with the turret machine gun (if you aim the front coxial, you won't be able to aim the back of the turret one). And if you approach from the side, you nullify the hull machine gun. Furthermore, if the crew choses to fight back with personal weapons, it cannot man the weapons from inside the tank, and the best they can carry are submachine guns, which are next to useless past 50 meters... not to mentiont that exposing themselves to fire it would mean that now the Germans have a shot at the crew unprotected, and they will win a firefight since they can bring to bear longer ranged weapons, and in greater numbers.
@VRichardsn
@VRichardsn 4 года назад
@Dwarov 1 _Tanks are not blind and deaf if the engine is not working_ How are you going to turn the turret without the engine running? You can't use the turret motor and you would be resorted to turn the turret around by hand, which was very slow due to the weight of the turret (it was roomy and well armored, after all). Also, tanks are very much blind and deaf. It is very difficult to hear your surroundings through 100 mm of armor, even more so when 6 men are working in a very confined space. I won't even try if we take into account the din of battle. Same for seeing. Have you ever been on a tank? If you don't have the opportunity to hop into one, download good simulator, like T-34 vs Tiger and give it a try, you will quickly see. People who haven't experienced a tank first hand cannot understand how difficult it is to keep track of your surroundings, due to the very limited and narrow fields of view the means of observation provide. _You do realise that they don't need to hit the infantry, right? Just by firing the HE shell in the vague direcrion they can already hit the infantry_ So by not hitting the infantry they hit the infantry. This phrase doesn't make any sense. Also, this is not a point and click mobile game. Hitting an infantryman with the F-32 gun is not easy feat. The infantry can approach from pretty much any angle in a 360º, or better yet, _from every angle_ What is the KV-1 going to do then? It can fire only at one target at a time. How much time do you think an infantryman can take to cover some 700 meters? It is all it takes. And besides, it doesn't even matter! This is not a KV-1 vs 5 men (and it would be a pretty even fight too), it is against an entire division. The infantry can simply rush the tank and there is nothing the tank can do about it, besides killing a few soldiers with a little luck. That is why infantry supports tanks when fighting enemy infantry. Tanks are very vulnerable against infantry, specially if they cannot take advantage of their mobility like in this case. _It very much can man the weapons if onld the driver and radio operator fight back They are not doing anything either way_ Two tankists (which by definition are not trained infantryman nor do not have any particular training in marksmanship) are going to fight off a large attack. Sure. _SMGs are deadly at over 200 meters, not sure where you got that 50 meters part from_ Oh, most certainly they are deadly from 200 m. _If they hit_ Submachineguns are notoriously inaccurate past 50 meters (with some exceptions like the KP-31), due to firing heavy, slow pistol bullets travelling down a short barrel. _But soviet tank crews recieved SVT-40s, PPSH-41s and nagant pistols as well as grenades and anti-tank charges_ Nonsense. Most tank crews only carried sidearms, for a simple reasons: weapons are bulky and take up a lot of space inside a cramped environment like that of the turret. And that is with a "compact" weapon like a submachinegun. An SVT-40 would be ridiculous inside a tank. The state has spent a lot of time and resources into training tankists as to how best to operate their tank. Time and resources that it is wasted if they start fighting like infantry. That is why tankists are supposed to flee their tanks if the vehicle cannot fight anymore. The grunts of the infantry are meant to absorb gunfire, not the crewmen. _It is almost impossible to sneak up on a lone tank while it's engine is not working simple due to it's HE shell alone_ Think about it for a second: the tank cannot track and engage more than one target at the same time. 5 guys running from different directions can close the distance with a tank in no time. And the closer the infantry is, the safer they are, because the tank doesn't have an angle to engage them. That is why I am adamant in that the KV-1 had infantry support, otherwise Germans would have simply overrun it with soldiers. We have all seen Fury. We all know how ridiculous and stupid the final stand was. Now how come we give the KV-1 myth a pass, when it is the exact same situation?

I'd say the most direct influence was NOT the development of what would later become the Tiger as the Tiger was being developed since 1936, but rather the decision on mount the long 75mm antitank gun on the Pz4 and turn it into the main battle tank of the army, a role previously allocated to the Pz3.
@Lehr-km5be
@Lehr-km5be 4 года назад
Yup, that is true. The direct answer to T-34 and KV-1 threat was the Panther tank. The idea of a Heavy Tank used to create breakthroughs came to minds of germans before the war, and that eventually evolved into Tiger.

According to some accounts, the dead crew was recovered and buried by the approaching German soldiers with full military honors, while in other accounts, the crew escaped from their crippled tank during the night.[17] The 6th Panzer Division Kampfgruppe commander, General Erhard Raus, described it as a KV-1, which was damaged by several shots from an 88 mm anti-tank gun fired from behind the vehicle, while it was distracted by light Panzer 35(t) tanks from Panzer Battalion 65.[h] The KV-1 crew were killed by a pioneer engineer unit who pushed grenades through two holes made by the AT gun while the turret began moving again, with the other five or six shots having not fully penetrated. Apparently, the KV-1 crew had only been stunned by the shots which had entered the turret and were buried nearby with military honors by the German unit.[18] In 1965, the remains of the crew were exhumed and reburied at the Soviet military cemetery in Raseiniai. According to research by Russian military historian Maksim Kolomiets, the tank may have been from the 3rd Company of the 1st Battalion of the 4th Tank Regiment, itself a part of the 2nd Tank Division. It is impossible to identify the crew because their personal documents were lost after being buried in the woods north of Raseiniai during the retreat, possibly by German troops.

@olliefoxx7165
@olliefoxx7165 4 года назад
@Il Dotten nope. Had family that fought Germans and Japanese. I'm adult enough to know that but for the grace of God I could have been born either. You Germans have had so much guilt instilled in you it's should be criminal. I read recently where you finally paid off your reparations to Israel in submarines as a final payment. The Poles are still paying them for some reason as are the French. In the US we had a civil war where the combined death toll was around a million. Doesn't sound like much till you look at our population of around 35-40 million. They tried that guilt crap on us as well. Fortunately we have to many examples of why the war was really fought. Anyhow, the poor average German soldier will always be villainized while your Communist heroes will be celebrated. You do know the Soviets were planning on invading Germany right? They were beat to the punch. Your poor Soviets gobbled up Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Belarus, etc.. and tried to gobble Finland. They agreed to this with Germany but you have more sympathy for them. Is it bc of the juice? The Bolshevik killed millions of Christians but that's probably illegal to teach in Europe. It's ok to be analytical and admire the heroics of a soldier no matter the uniform. Most of that time flowed the ideals of Western society while some followed the ideals of animals. Don't hate yourself or your people. I'm no Wehraboo, nor red army fanatic. I love my country but realize we got forced into the war by the Japanese and British. Regardless it seems we both enjoy history and learning. Best wishes and goid luck. Perhaps we will meet again on a history channel.

@anasevi9456 4 года назад
yep, where as the fury was plausible because by then the Germans were reduced to fighting with sticks, and the Easy 8's were upguned and somewhat uparmoured shermans.. This happened because the KV series was such a slap to the face to the Germans, T34 too, the germans didnt have anything remotely in the same class. KV was moded out quickly for the same reason many later heavy german tanks kinda flopped, overworked engine, gearbox not up to the task, over stressed suspension.
@spartans-4196
@spartans-4196 4 года назад
@@anasevi9456 And then, after the war, lighter tanks became pretty much useless as the Main Battle Tank began to dominate the battlefield, bringing more armour and heavier caliber weapons, as well as increased speed. Honestly, the germans would've stood a better chance if they'd focused on upgrading the Panzer IV's and Panzer V's, rather than making ridiculously large tanks like the Maus, or heavy tanks like the Tiger 1 and 2. The other problem was a crippling lack of steel, oil and manpower, as well as a shortage of chromium. Had the germans been able to obtain these, advanced fighters such as the Me 262 could've been able to be made more reliable and in greater numbers, thus ensuring German Air superiority. Germany was kind of doomed from the start due to their lack of resources. They did make a great deal of progress, considering the scarcity of resources and the impoverished state the Treaty of Versailles left them in. Note: I don't agree with the Nazi ideology. I do however admire their martial prowess and engineering. Also, regarding ridiculous designs, nothing beats the P1000 Ratte "landcruiser". That thing was an absolute behemoth, and definitely not practical at all.
