I know the swim your fishing well I have fished the dove for specimen's for 30 yrs some of your tactics mirror mine ,the carp you caught came into the river when the British Gypsum AA put them in around Tutbury Castle the river flooded and all but a couple ended up in the river expensive mistake ,there are some great fish in the dove I have had a 16 1/2 barbel and loads of doubles , 20lb + pike countless times 6lb chub and even a 3lb Grayling amongst countless others tight lines

Hi Paul, That is an awesome barbel... What a fish!!! I've just started barbel fishing here in France and would be more than happy with a fish half that size. So far I've had quite a lot of fish in the two months I've been at it, but the best is so far just under 6lb. Hope to be able to find some bigger ones... All the best Kind Regards Gareth

Hi Mick I use this type of feeder as I can adapt it to suit the conditions of the river and my needs. It works for me so why change. I also have and use shop bought open end feeders, I was just showing how you can adapt this type of feeder to suit the situation that I was fishing. I have caught numerous doubles on this feeder system so they do work.

I always use braid as my hook link material as this is the most vulnerable part of the fishing set up to get cut off on snags or sharp rocks on the river bottom. The Dove is a beautiful river and contains some very large barbel, not many but lots of doubles. It is a spate river so pick and choose when you go

Hi Simon Try Burton Mutual Angling Association. They have got miles of both the Trent and the Dove and some of the stretches do hold some good double figure barbel.

Thought the video and info was tip top as was the fishing, I've only started fishing and hopped straight onto the barbel so don't know a lot but found every thing in your blog really useful, like I said I am a beginner and haven't even a any gear, my friend kindly lets me use his, for now. !! Any ways I'm from Corby, Northamptonshire, do you know any where closer than the Trent where I have been fishing that produces nice barbel, any advise an input would be gratefuly accepted, cheers!!

As you can see from the video, The hook length is 3 foot plus. It is this latter part of the set up that generally catches and connects with sharp obstacles on the river bottom. By using this braid I avoid cut offs. By using this system I do not lose fish and tackle.

Mr Royston - why not share the postage with a couple of fishing mates, assuming they might fancy trying something from the same company. I do it a lot and save loads of money...... Great session, Paul!

Hi, why are you using 25lb braid on a 12lb main i thort the idea was to have a lower braking strain braid so u dont snap main n lose more tackle! Nice fish btw!!

Paul - I don't live far from the Dove, at Findern. Can you suggest a club to join? I've previously been a member of "pride of Derby" Cheers

Is there a reason you fish 25lb braid bottom with only 12lb mainline?
@anglinglines
@anglinglines 6 лет назад
Paul has replied... The reason that I use a 25lb braid is 2 fold. Firstly the braid that I use is soft and slightly thicker than most modern braids and does not cut into the mouth of the fish. The main reason is to avoid cut offs on mussel shells, rocks and other sharp obstacles that can be sitting their on the river bed. 12lb main line is a necessity due to the ferocity of the take of double figure barbel. By fishing 12lb main line in conjunction with a stronger braided hook length, I find that you lose very few if any barbel due to cut offs. I cannot see the point in hooking a fish and getting cut off due to a low breaking strain hook length. I do fish long hook lengths which also assists in avoiding cut offs.

Nice Fish, but what a waste and chew on to turn a large maggot feeder into a open end feeder?? surely it would be easier and neater to use a open end feeder and instead of ruining a maggot feeder simply tape the end and holes of the open end feeder??

just use a ground bait feeder instead of cutting two holes out of the swim feeder
