Part 2 of my 2020 road trip takes me Barbel fishing on the River Wye. With very tough conditions this session tested me to the limit but in the end it became one of my most memorable fishing trips I can remember! With 2 new PB's and lots of other fish it proves persistence pays off and in the end all you really need it a good bait in the right spot.

I've never barbel fished but honestly watching this has made me want to give it a go ive caught them in the past but never actually targeted them great watch again simon as usual you looked well impressed with that rain 😂😂 tight lines pal from the NORTHERN CARP FREAKS 👍👍

Great result simon. If you dont like using heavy feeders you can always use PVA mesh bags full of pellet to feed the swim when its running hard. Keep the casts in the same spot, and recast frequently. Works a treat with a decent hooklength, but does cast a bit like a dogs breakfast.

Great stuff! I’m planning a trip to the river wye next month to target the barbel and watching this has really spurred me on. We used to be able to catch barbel locally to me on the Cherwell and the Thames in Oxfordshire but unfortunately they’re very few and far between now.

I have never had a real Barbel before, had a few small ones out of lakes but I do not count them unless they are out of a river.

Hi Simon A gripper or flat style lead should help you hold bottom in a flow, obviously if its a strong current the weight of the lead will help. Great video buddy 👍

Finally found the Barbel! Never fished the Wye but think I’d have turned around and headed for home with it ripping through like that 😂 Get over to a couple beats of Avon & Stour on a day ticket if you fancy some more!

Great blog as always Simon 👍 I have a question to ask, during your walk about in the rain you said that your waterproofs weren't very good, 😳 they look to me you were wearing the vass 175 ? Is that correct are they no good then ? As I am about to purchase the winter version. Would you advise to look for something else ?

Yeah the vass ones. They seem to let water in the seams etc. The material is waterproof but the seams need sealing in my opinion 👍

Not even finished the vid yet but have to say I wish I’d known you were fishing the Hereford stretch as that’s where I live would of come and showed you some spots and you had a cracking result there bud.
