2:10 I think Alan actually serves a very important role in the movie. When he tries to leave Barbie Land, he explains to the mother and daughter that he doesn’t fit in with the other Ken’s and he can’t take it. I think Alan is a good representation of how the patriarchy alienates OTHER MEN who are told they’re supposed to conform to what a patriarchal society thinks a man is supposed to be. Also, super fun character haha.

The "Margot Robbie isn't a good pick for 'I feel ugly'"-joke really got me, since 1) the narrator interacted with the barbie-world quite a lot when it was introduced in the beginning and first songs, so we know they exist. 2) of course we all know it, but it was really unexpected to have it addressed in a movie. I really liked the Barbie movie, a few days after watching it I realized how accurate it is to how you play with the dolls as a kid. For example everyone saying hi to each other, if you even have a Ken he’s never as involved in stuff as the Barbies, everyone shallowly doing their one job. Barbieland isn’t a utopia because man bad, it’s because kids play with dolls the way they do.
@Femmeaesthetic
@Femmeaesthetic 9 месяцев назад
I would have some criticisms about this film, It didn't make sense the barbieland is "matriarchy", yes I understand it's a feminized world and the kens are used for "accessory", speaking of accessory, with actual dolls and animated barbie films, the kens did have occupation like the barbie's ( and yes kids played with these male dolls as well), yes barbie's would have 1000's of more jobs than kens cause obviously she's going to be the main character but the fact that this film tried to take different direction for political messages or themes is pretty weird to me since it's a movie about a iconic doll people grew up with.

When stereotypical Barbie says that she doesn't feel pretty, the narrator doesn't say that Margot Robbie wasn't a good fit for this role, she says that Margot was the wrong person to make this specific point about beauty standards with, the idea being that her exposure to the real world has changed her self-perception and worldview so much that she doesn't feel like a stereotypical Barbie anymore, because she clearly fits mainstream beauty standards very well. When I saw the movie in the cinema, that joke actually got a laugh out of most women in the audience.

I think the reason there's only one "Weird Barbie" is because the Barbies are all meant to be avatars for how girls typically play with them, hence why the main Barbie is called "stereotypical Barbie". They're not individual playthings, they're ideas, so Weird Barbie is just a physical representation of all the roughed up Barbies out there rather than any one particular doll. And it's also why Stereotypical Barbie is the one experiencing the main conflict because she's being played with by a grown adult woman who likely gave up any imaginary ideals for her doll in order to project onto her.

As a historian, it's amazing how backward we have become while thinking we are more progressive than we used to be. For example: the pandemic and the fit people were having over masks and quarantine. During the Black Plague, both were created and people used them to protect themselves and others from dying. Also, while working on a book about 15-17th Century France, the number of women regents for their sons was remarkably larger than I even knew. I learned about one of the greatest baroque artist (a woman) who's entire career was derailed because of her being a r*pe survivor. There were female authors, composers (and the book on fly fishing that men still use today was written by a woman). Society puts more emphasis on men being greater like their achievements cannot stand alongside the achievements of women. I don't know where that comes from. Oh, Oppenheimer looks pretty awesome. I think the double release is why that weird Shapiro dude et. al. are against Barbie. Somehow (again), he and others feel that a woman is overshadowing a man. I love how they forget they came out of one while trying to downplay the contributions of women to civilization.

I actually really like how exaggerated the "real world" is in Barbie - because think of it from the perspective of Barbie. She's lived her whole life in a paradise where women run everything and women can be anything, and now she is for the first time in her life stepping into something different. She's going to be hyper-aware of the differences and of how she's treated in the real world compared to Barbieland - hence the exaggeration. I also personally interpret this movie to have a sort of abstract coming-of-age theme to it. I interpret Barbie as this little girl who's all of a sudden experiences changes to her body, and at the same time is noticing that the people around her are looking at her with a very different lense from before. She doesn't know why it's happening and wants to escape from it and return to when she was younger and the world was simpler but she can't, and by the end of the movie she accepts it and embraces being a woman - embracing both the beauty and the horrors that come with holding that role in our society.

If I were to criticize Barbie, it would be because of how Mattel, while being shown as the villain, is ultimately cheered on to make more money from more Barbie products, while also being shown as clumsy and not really dangerous at all. It seemed like sometimes the movie didn't know if it wants to prove a point, what the point is, or if it just wants to push the plot forward - Kendom was shown as a place when everybody was happy, the brainwashing was introduced in a sloppy way, Barbies won the election via seduction and manipulation, which doesn't go well with the empowerment message. The whole role reversal concept was really cool, but sometimes I wondered "soo... is Ken patriarchy now? Or is Barbie patriarchy now?", like with the beach night manipulation scene. There's a lot more that could be said about the movie, it actually is a great conversation topic if people are speaking in good faith. Despite me mostly bitching in my comment, I gotta say I loved the movie, it was funny, had great vibe, the acting was great and it was one of the more interesting women empowerment products of recent years. It wasn't perfect, but it was Kenough.

I saw this with my youngest daughter and her friend a couple days ago and I admit I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. I had heard how it was an Anti-Men Feminist Hit-Piece designed to destroy the Patriarchy and all that junk, but I went in with an open mind and was pleasantly surprised. I think you hit the nail on the head that it didn't hate men and it also didn't necessarily make women out to be the saviors of all humankind. Barbieland was not perfect even at the end, they didn't have true equality (not allowing men on the Supreme Court, for instance) and Kens were still "second class", but as a girl-imagination-fueled mirror of reality, that makes a lot of sense. I never had Barbies as a kid, being a boy, though I did often play with them with my cousins and have bought them for my cousins and my daughters. The easter eggs and cameos from some of the weird Barbies I remember were great (Earring Magic Ken and the camera Barbie were ones I remember well), and I laughed the hardest at the pooping dog cameo because I literally bought my daughters that set when it was on the market. My daughter and her friend loved the movie and they can't wait to see it again with my oldest daughter when she returns later this week.

@@bioticjedi3864 I just saw this movie with my mother today. When Glory went on a tangent about how tough it is for a woman, I leaned toward my mother and said, "This is exactly how men feel, too." She shrugged and said she'd never felt like that at all. I, a man, related to Glory's problems more than my mother. That would be fine if Glory's rant wasn't portrayed as something that women specifically deal with, that men don't know, when it's something many of us deal with every single day as well.

I like your view. I like the emphasis you put on the fact that this, on it's surface, is a movie about dolls that children play with. However, as a parent, watching it with my teenage son, I had this moment where I realized I failed him in some way. There was a point when my son was probably 8 years old and all of his friends were girls, only because that's who lived on our street that was his age. They were all at our house with their Barbie dolls sitting around the coffee table playing, and he was laying under the coffee table just staring straight up looking like he wished he were dead. When I asked him about it he said, he hated Barbies and so he was the dog... his choice. When we left the movie I asked him if he remembered that. He did. And then he says the words that made me realize I really failed him in that moment. "I didn't even know there was a Ken doll. If I had it would have wanted one so I could play with them (the girls)." It never even occurred to me. Probably because I grew up hating Barbie. 🙄 You try so hard not to let your personal problems interfere with you raising a child. Like if you're the oldest and that child's the youngest. If you're a girl and your child's a boy. You try not to put your feelings of conflict onto them. You want them to grow up to be their own person and to be securing themselves. And I realized in that moment I let my feelings be put on him. In many ways it was small and it was insignificant, but it stung a little. Especially, since I could see him and so many other boys I know and boys I knew in the struggle that the Ken's were having. Yes, ultimately it is a movie about dolls, but there's a lot more there than just dolls.

They literally marketed the film as being for both men and women... Personally, my problems are with how haphazard and messy their handling of feminism/politics was. Ken is treated like the bad guy...but is role reversed into a female position of disempowerement. So it feels like the movie is trying to make the point "See men? This is what it's like!" Whilst simultaneously being too afraid to make Barbie the bad guys to make the role reversal actually work. You can have a fun and silly movie provided the politics is kept simple or absent. But this felt like it was trying to be a fun and silly movie while being full of political commentary it wasn't entirely sure it knew how to make, and was often afraid of making.

I feel like not enough people are talking about the pro-men's mental health message at the end of the movie. It shows near the end of the movie how men sometimes feel alone in the world, with no proper way to express their emotions without being considered "weak" or "ungrateful" by society. The important thing to remember about Barbie is that while it is a pro-woman movie, it also makes sure to include a pro-man message as well; that way, both genders feel properly represented in a well-written comedic fashion. I fully agree with both reviews. Jean Tatlock actually led a fascinating life all on her own. She was one of the few women in her Stanford med school program back in the early-mid 1930s and was very involved in the emerging science of psychology. She’s the one who introduced Oppenheimer to a lot of his lifelong friends outside of the world of physics. I’m reading the biography the movie is based on and it’s very good at covering everyone, including the women, in Oppenheimer’s life. Recommend it to anyone willing to read a 1000 page book.

I'm transmasc and my partner is nonbinary but born male. We both loved Barbie and watched it a second time with our 9 year old daughter and 11 year old son. The only remotely non-kid friendly thing I can think of is the "beach off" joke, which they didn't understand anyways. I want to add that another message that I picked up on was to let yourself feel and express your emotions. Barbie cries twice, and both times directly afterwards she seems to figure something out and progress. Ken cries at the climax for the first time, and through talking with Barbie grows and starts to understand himself. It's a very big part of toxic masculinity, and the worst parts of our culture in general, that pressures men and women to hide their feelings, especially sadness.

I think the fact that the political message was so hand fisted and not very subtle, was very much intentional. I think it's mostly because we are living with audiences who have little to no media literacy that sometimes subtlety will not work and the messages of a movie will be misinterpreted. So I think that Greta just was like "fuck it, treat the audience like children" because, after all, Barbie is directed at children.

Regarding the women in Oppenheimer: this is a biopic about Oppenheimer and the film primarily takes place through his perspective and his memory. The women feel unreal and extra bc thats how he views women. Oppenheimer is also extremely self centered, even when the president himself said its not all about you. Jean was just a fuck buddy that he pumped and dumped after he cheated on her with another fuck buddy and got her pregnant. He's had numerous affairs throughout the film and pays absolutely no mind to his wife or kids bc they're simply not important to him, the bomb is. It's interesting to see how he (and the other men most likely) never consider womens intelligence. There are lines in the movie mentioning that these scientists wives also have masters in things like chemical engineering. But since they're women and married they are completely disregarded and downgraded to mere housewives, even when there's a small but important mention on how.when these scientists go home they talk about the project with theor wives and they end up helping woth the problem solving... And then never give them any credit or pay them any mind. Women simply aren't considered in this movie bc that's how Opeheimer and his group see women. I actually really liked how this was portrayed in the movie. We're experiencing these women through a selfish shitty person who happens to be a brilliant scientist. We see that Katherine is very clearly suffering but since it's through his perspective we see his priorities. He doesn't care she's unhappy, doesn't care that she's got postpartum or nearly killed their kid. He views her as a nuisance that is obligated to stay by his side, which she does but.looks miserable the entire time, knowing he's having affairs and has been reduced to the "loyal wife" role forced to lie to the government for him. I like that we the more consciencious audience can see that the women in his life are suffering (or dead) and see how shitty of a person, husband, and father Oppenheimer is (like we his kids twice in the whole movie) but because it's through his perspective we can see what he truly cares about and views as important: the bomb, fame, fortune, ego. I thought it was well done though it may not have been done intentionally since Nolan doesn't do women or romance well at all to the point that I wouldn't be surprised if he's a virgin who's only ever heard of women from dime novels

I agree to a degree but I do understand a lot of the negative comments. I think it would've been cool to show Jean's situation from a separate point of view, maybe from Chevalier or something like that, so we could see more of a contrast between what Op thinks Jean is vs the perspective others have of her and her behavior, this would be a pretty clever way of showing how increasingly skewed Op's perspective is on top of building Jean's character as something much more than simply a "crazy passive-aggressive fuck buddy that sends mixed signals all the time", because she was much more than that to Op in his actual life. I get your point but I think it could've been done better but as you said before, Nolan is not good with this kind of stuff lol.

There’s a theory going around saying all of the colored scenes are fake and what Oppenheimer sees, and the black and white scenes are the real world and what actually happens. So the fact that the women feel fake is due to the fact that Oppenheimer didn’t spend much time outside of work and so lost in thought that he didn’t see them as anything aside from love machines made for him. This also explains why his wife goes from loving to alcoholic from one scene to another, he never noticed until one day it became really obvious

I really truly loved the Barbie movie. It shows how both men and women need to realize that the world should be equal and how everyone should try to become who they want to be. The real world is controlled by men and the Barbie world is controlled by women, but it showed that the other sides are suffering. Everyone needs to be equal and we all need to work together to find each other to find happiness with each other by respecting each others hopes and dreams.

I don’t know if I understand the movie 100% but what I got from this video is that Barbie leaving Barbieland is her moving on from a fantasy land where everything is about girls to a men dominated world. Basically she not only needed but she also wanted to grow up and mature, just like the kids who played with Barbie dolls.

Barbie is one of my favorite movies of this year. Period. I grew up playing with Barbie's and I've even done school reports on Barbie, it holds a special place in my heart. Very nostalgic for me watching this, I would buy the DVD when and if it comes out.

Exactly political messages that are so in your face no,, subtle things yes but in a Barbie movie it seems unnecessary .Especially since every other movie does the exact same thing becoming way too much,, even if a movie is subtle with it people will get pissed because they're going to the movies to escape that. So whats the point if you want politics go to a political rally,, watch political media,, it doesn't have to be every single movie and remake. And if thats the perception of men from women in Barbie land because they haven't been played with by young boys its a little spiteful tbh if thats the logic. Idk each to their own im glad people are enjoying it tho even if it wasn't quite to my taste. Thanks Elvis you're a legend.

Oppenheimer was a bunch of context around a few key experiences (especially at IMAX). I definitely agree with review of it being tedious, but weirdly felt none of the tedium while watching it. Haven't seen Barbie yet, but after your review I think I will.

I thought the movie made positive arguments for conservatism, the real world, and the illusion of patriarchy. The problem, or success, with the movie is that whatever it's message was, if it had one at all, it could be interpreted in so many different ways. People who hated it saw some message they didn't like and the people who liked it saw some message they did like. I liked it for the reasons I stated in my first sentence.

Women are not discouraged or told they are nothing without someone else nowadays. I know of no parent that does this. Hasn't been like that for a long time now. Quit using the 50's. But it does seem like we're being told that men can't do anything without women. Seems to be a major character arch in entertainment lately.

I mean, when a lot of movies come out over the years, bashing men and making them the bad guy and not talking about male issue and only ever really making women the victims and such. It makes sense that people get pissed when they see this stuff. kind of clouds their eyes and they see it everywhere. you see a message in hollywood pushed through film and i can see why they say these things. elvis is right and some of the other critics are right also in my eyes. its interpration i suppose. i think also its the extreme way they say things, people take them more leteral.

The film is PG-13 and has the F-word; I don't think it's for kids. Secondly, the patriarchy isn't real in the US; society is not solely run by men. There are women in congress, the supreme court, as vice president, and recently as speaker of the house.
@PurveyorOfTrash

Saying that because some women hold executive office jobs as the example that the Patriarchy doesn't exist is like being on the losing team and being handed a participation trophy

@Momocham23
@Momocham23 9 месяцев назад
it's a bit of both. barbie has so many jobs that in that aspect, she's a feminist representation of a "strong working woman" but barbie also represented a very narrow presentation of how women should looks like like skinny, white and blonde due to the time of its creations. also the way that the ceo of barbie company, a doll company made for women, is still a man is another statement. despite there are many working women the reality is that a large portion of the gender in power are still men.
@CodeeXD

@@Momocham23it's not a doll company they make more then just dolls. Also what do you want the ceo to just step down and give the position to a woman because they sell barbies among other things? That's silly

Barbie has always been sold under the pretense of female empowerment. The dolls are not about feminism (which would have been great), but rather about convincing parents that if they don't buy their kids these dolls, then they are not supporting feminism.

If we're talking about things that bothered us in the Barbie movie then my main sticking point is how the Barbie's took back power. They literally used seduction techniques and feigning interest in the activities that the Ken's liked to get close to them. Then, when they were close enough for the Kens they were targeting to let their guard down, they switched Kens to stir up animosity between them causing them to fight among themselves. While they were fighting they used this opportunity to take power back. Like, this sounds suspiciously close to how incels think and they just played it straight?
@texanplayer7651
@texanplayer7651 9 месяцев назад
May I remind you that the Barbies were brainwashed in less than a day by a random Ken with 2 functional braincells and that they needed the assistance of women from the real world to be rebrainwashed? If anything, the Barbie's were much more dumb. And in the scene you are describing, the Kens fight because of the Barbies but make peace and become bros again without them. If that is not a clear metaphor of the cause and end to all conflicts and wars in human history of our real world, I don't know what is.
