@travisearl771 Actually Oppenheimer really, really, really REALLY RULED. It was easily the BEST film of 2023 so far. Don't be surprised if Nolan finally wins Best Director Oscar!!!! No, Barbie on the other hand, really, really, really, REALLY SUCKED THE BIG ONE. Stupid jokes about plastic vaginas, and gynecologists?! Come on, that shit got old. Thankfully, only had to endure it watching for free online and even then. It was one of the worst films ever made!

The coda is essential. Oppenheimer is one of those films that screams rewatch. Many layers, much to digest. And the hearing is the end of his arc. How he was maligned at the peak of the McCarthy scourge. I absolutely think this is a win. Btw, it is STILL filling seats at my theater. We have seen it 3 times. When it was sold out for first two weeks, we finally got to see it early August. Blown away. Saw it for a rewatch just last week and again a few days later. We are reading the book and the screenplay and Nolan must win that! I can watch it again just to savor those performances. Murphy is incomparable. Each of the rest of the cast (dozens!) brings an A game. RDJ MUST win!
@nikitamohan3390

@jeffsneider @scottmantz Don't you think the showdown or confrontation between Oppenheimer and Truman was important and impactful. Especially that scene where a guilt ridden Murphy is like "I have blood on my hands" and Truman just coldly and indifferently removes his white handkerchief and waves it in front of Oppenheimer and when he leaves the room, he's like "Don't ever bring that crybaby in here ever again". That was powerful stuff. I think the mental breakdown and dismantling of Lewis Strauss' and his shrewd motives and mind games especially in the 3rd act is what will secure his supporting nomination.

My current top ten with all major nominations I’d give them (best picture is assumed, “*” means my current winner). 1. Across the Spider-Verse (Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, cinematography, animated*) 2. Asteroid City (Director, Adapted Screenplay, supporting actress, cinematography, production design, ensemble*) 3. Past Lives (director*, screenplay*, lead actress*, lead actor, supporting actor, cinematography*) 4. Oppenheimer (director, screenplay, lead actor*, supporting actor, sound*, production design*, ensemble) 5. Sanctuary (lead actress, lead actor) 6. Evil Dead Rise (director) 7. Barbie (lead actress, supporting actor*, production design) 8. John Wick 4 (cinematography) 9. M3gan 10. Guardians of the Galaxy 3 (visual effects) Past Lives is probably the highest quality, but it loses out in picture for me because it’s not as ambitious or original as some of the other films.

In another subject, but not really derivative of Oscar Predictions, now that the TIFF has revealed all of its lineup, here are my 10 most expected, the ones I'll surely attend: 1. Fingernails - i'm a sucker for Jessie Buckley and Riz Ahmed as they are some of the best actors around the block nowadays, and I'm quite sure it might be a magnetic couple on screen, maybe possibilities for the Acting Awards 2 - Lee - a World War II film with the superbs Kate Winslet and Marion Cotillard might be a possible contender for Picture, Director and Actress/Supporting Actress, plus its their first time together on screen, and I don't remember much war films which revolve around female characters, so thats a plus 3 - Toll - i've been discovering brazilian movies in the past few years, love me some Bacurau, Mars One, and Charcoal, by Caroline Markowicz, and this is her second, and the fact that it is about gay conversion therapy might propel it into Foreign Film and even Picture and screenplay 4 - The Zone of Interest - one of the talks of the season (unfortunately I wasnt able to attend Cannes for personal reasons), and another possible candidate for Foreign Film and Picture, probably Cinematography also 5 - Anatomy of a Fall - speaking of Cannes, i'm also very hyped to see this Sandra Huller performance, it might be a contender for Foreign Film, Actress and Screenplay 6 - The Boy and the Heron - mister Miyazaki return that might be the upsetter of Spiderverse (which i think its quite good technically, but as of now I'm a supporter of Suzume instead). Probably guaranteed in Animation 7 - Monster - Hirokazu Kore Eda is a hit (Shoplifters) or miss (Broker) for me, but I love japanese films as much as I enjoy brazilian and south korean ones, so if this one works, it might be another possibility for Foreign Film 8 - Rustin - i'm expecting a lot from mister Colman Domingo (more here than in The Color Purple, which, by trailer, sounds like a dud of a film), and I need me a frontrunner for Best Actor, cause even though I adore Cillian Murphy in Oppenheimer, and surely he will land a nomination, I'm not sold on a win (it lacked a little of grey nuance for me) 9 - Next Goal Wins - this might be the comeback we need from one of the best actors of the last decade, Michael Fassbender (lets never forget his Shame delivery). The fact that it has Elizabeth Moss on it sells me, and Waititi sense of humour might make this quite a fun watch for a Sunday afternoon (on the same lane, i'm not expected much of a performance of Air, which I have seen and find it just okay, and The Holdovers, and I love my Giamatti, but Payne never really works for me, but I might be wrong, so I'll give it a watch at TIFF) 10 - Nyad - Annette Bening might pull a Jamie Lee Curtis out of this one Cant wait for these films and your reviews (btw, Barbie for Best Director)

The whole film really was quite ASININE. Yep I said it. The only people who like Barbie are sixty year old women still playing with dolls and low attention spans. No Barbie is NOT Oscar fair and won't get any nominations except maybe for those UGLY pink siets. Oppenheimer on the other hand is easily the BEST film of 2023 so far. Ask anyone who has actually seen it. It's definitely the Oscar frontrunner so far.

Not you guys prefering Air over Asteroid City. Because at least the second one allowed me to think about my full on relationship with the world while watching it, while Air is a boring commercial, more of a publicity stunt than Barbie itself, which of course is a Best Picture contender, in the same path of Top Gun Maverick (saving the theaters narrative). Just because Asteroid City gives you time to think, while putting on some great aesthetics, it doesn't mean it is bad. It gives you hints of interpretation, which is what the arts are all about, and cinema is still an artform. Other two I really enjoyed: Suzume (over Spiderverse, which has great animation, but is bloated), and Rye Lane, which i don't think is a threat right now, but it is quite loved critically, specially for a romantic comedy. Very pumped up to watch Oppenheimer, Past Lives and check out this year's TIFF.

Here's are my top ten films with the best chance of getting a major Oscar nominations. All of these films have been released into movie theaters or been shown at film festivals: 1. Killers of the Flower Moon - All categories. P, D, A (at least three for Dicaprio, DeNiro, Gladstone. Cardinal and Plemens as a maybe), AS, and FE. 2. Oppenheimer - All categories. P, D, A (at least Murphy, Downey, Blunt. Could be Damon, Pugh), AS, and FE 3. Past Lives - All major categories. P, D, A (at least Lee. Maybe Magaro), OS, and FE 4. Barbie - All categories. P, D, A (at least Robbie and Gosling), AS, and FE 5. Anatomy of a Fall - All categories. P, D, OS, A (Huller), FE 6. The Zone of Interest - All categories. 7. Air - All categories. P, D, A (Damon, Davis, Messina are all possibilities), OS, and FE 8. Across the Spider-Verse - Animated Feature. 9. A Thousand And One - P, D, OS, A (at least Taylor) 10. May December - OS, A (Portman, Moore, Melton) Honorable mention - Blackberry (Howerton) & Are You There God? (writing, acting) I don't believe the FYC gang mentioned AOAF or TZOI. Both are festival favorites and could potentially fulfill that non-English Language quota in the Best Picture line-up. The big Sundance Film Festival winner has a good recent track record with the Oscars -- Minari and CODA. MD could benefit from a Netflix release -- that's why I have it at #10.

Not that I think it deserves it, but I think it's ridiculous to suggest that Barbie won't be nominated for Best Picture, given that it's likely going to end up being the highest or the second highest grossing film of the year, while not being kiddie fare like The Mario Movie. For my money, as far as which films actually deserve to win, it's Oppenheimer's race to lose, and the only real contender is Killers of the Flower Moon. I could see the big narrative going into awards season being "will Marty finally be affirmed as a multiple-oscar-winner, or will Nolan finally win his first?" I do hope Past Lives gets some nominations as I was shocked by how much I ended up liking that film, but as great as it is to support indies, especially ones that punch above their weight class, the film is simply not on par with what's going on in Oppenheimer, and the same will likely be true of it in a comparison against Killers of the Flower Moon.

Are yall seriously trying to hype up the blandest, driest movie of the year in Air, but wanna downplay the incredible feat of Barbie??? Is this the Twilight Zone? The upside down? What is this??

If the strike means just about every big movie from the second half of the year (besides some foreign, indie, and animated stuff) gets pushed…nothing stands a chance against Oppenheimer. This film was a revelation, possibly Nolan’s best film and an utterly stirring experience to say the least. Even if stuff like Killers of the Flower Moon and Dune Part II come out on time, I don’t see those taking too many awards away from Oppie (and I’m a much bigger Scorsese fan than Nolan, and I’m betting KotFM is excellent.) Across the Spider-Verse, Barbie, Past Lives, Asteroid City, and a few others have been quite good but Oppenheimer was special, films like that are why I love movies so much.

There are some wonderful lead and supporting actor performances in Polite Society film. My film of the year so far, so my view is tainted by my love for the film. 🥰

Can't wait to see many of these. I did see 'Are you there God? It's me Margaret' and thought it was good but not necessarily awards material.

Please tell me Asteroid City is not dead. That movie was so thoughtful and original! I liked it much more than both Oppenheimer and Barbie.

production design and perhaps that's all. no way is it big contender, its way too divisive. some people say it's the best wes anderson film, some say it's his worst

Honestly Tetris was my favourite film about a product with Air next then Flaming Hot then Blackberry. And do agree about Still that was a fantastic documentary.

It’s past lives vs. Oppenheimer for me. The two very best flicks of 2023. Anticipated rest: killers of the flower moon, holdovers, Napoleon, dune part two, and magazine dreams, and poor things, last voyage of the Demeter, color purple, Ferrari and maestro

Gonna get hate for this by the easily offended and the self righteous crew but Ezra Miller was great in The Flash. Dude brought me to 😢 in the final scene with his Mother.

Gosling is Supporting, and not sure why he isn't being mentioned. I wouldn't be surprised if he won, and he's certainly a heavy nomination contender.

Barbie isn't getting any noms beyond maybe Set design. It was easily one of the WORST films of the year. (stupid plastic vagina jokes and gynecology jokes that are on a level for a five year old) BORING..........

Nimona is an awesome movie and should be nominated for Best Animated Feature. Also watch out for Wish from Disney Animation this fall. Both could challenge Spider-verse.

Usually when you guys do an awards preview for the first half of the year, most of the films end up getting overshadowed by fall festivals films, but I don't think that's the case this year. I think we've already seen 4 Best Picture contenders: Oppenheimer and Past Lives seem pretty locked, Barbie is a cultural sensation in the way Maverick was last year, so I think that gets a BP nom for sure. I'm also feeling confident about Spider-Verse's chances. Sure, it has an uphill battle considering it's animated and tied to a larger superhero property, but it's broken into the cultural zeitgeist and will make many top ten of the year lists. Air also has a chance, but I see that more as a Golden Globes type thing. Screenplay I could see though. I'd love if BlackBerry broke in as well, incredible movie!

You are dreaming all the way, NO WAY will Barbie get nominated for anything beyond maybe set design. Barbie is a one trick pony and guarnteed it will take a nosedive in the coming weeks with films like Grand Truism coming out. Oppenheimer is the film that will get TONS of nominations. ask anyone who has actually SEEN IT@
@tristanfrench7198
@tristanfrench7198 Год назад
@@mikedavison1466 That's your opinion and you are totally entitled to it, but your in the minority. Seeing as the film is completely shattering records, dominating the cultural conversation, and has strong buzz from critics, it's very safe for a nomination. That type of gonzo, maximalist filmmaking with a humanist angle is very popular right now - just look at what happened with Everything Everywhere (a film I predicted would win the Oscar as soon as I saw it back in April 2022). Both Oppenheimer and Barbie will get Best Picture nominations guaranteed and will be among the frontrunners to win.
