Achara and Andrew React to BARBIE (2023). Barbie is a fantasy comedy film starring Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey , Suicide Squad & The Wolf of Wall Street) as the titular character, and Ryan Gosling (La La Land, Blade Runner 2049 & The Notebook) as Ken.

What gave me real chills after 7th watch is the scene where the girl next to Sasha says “I hated dolls with hair” Could it mean that she or someone close to her was really sick? 😢

As a high risk ob/gyn sonographer it drives me insane how people talk about women's bodies. My daughter came home and said her 'front butt' one day and I asked who said that, she said it was her teacher. I told her she says vagina from now on, she is never to speak like that, and I sent her teacher an email that we do not use baby language for human anatomy. I was so pissed.

@@RoRZoro Oh honey you would be surprised by how many teenagers and even grown adults who are too embarrassed to talk about periods, vaginas, or getting your vajayjay checked out by a doctor. Some guys dont even want to talk about getting your prostate checked because getting a finger in your butt is too gay for some people. These kinds of topics are still considered taboo in some places and cultures.

@@bluebaconjake405 I'm from India and yes, words like Vagina are not that openely accepted, but it's very common among women. But there is absolutely no taboo about gynecologist. Eveyone says that without any problem. Meanwhile talking about male parts are considerd as extreme taboo than female parts and problems.

"My names Ken" "and so am I!" Is my absolute favorite. It WOULD have been grammatically correct if they stuck with "I'm just Ken" like they have been this entire time, but beach changed it once and no one else caught the change, and sounded so proud not realizing that it makes no sense, it's so good

I remember people questioning him being cast for the role, but I knew he’d be great. I just didn’t think he would steal the whole damn show the way he did! It was a brilliant comedic performance.

I love how stiff some of the movement and dialogue is, and how silly some of the action sequences are (especially the barbie car flip and Ken flipping through the air after trying to surf). It actually does feel like little kids playing with them and I think that's a really fun detail.

This is not a movie for children. It's a movie for all the girls -- now women moms and grandmoms -- who played with Barbie over the decades. The doll was invented in 1959. I was born not long after that, one of the first generations to play with these dolls. This movie's themes were geared towards us the girls who came after and what we've had to deal with and what we're dealing with now.

People throw around the word feminism so much as a negative and in this case to explain the focus on women in this movie, but the whole point of actual real feminism is equality for all. A focus has always been on women because that is where the attention was and is most needed, but as shown in this movie it's not just realising the expectation on women and the struggles we have to go through, but also the expectations put on men and how they don't need to live up to societal (patriarical) expectation and just be Ken and kenough.

Just some Trivia. 1: Barbie doll was copied from a German fashion doll called Bild Lilli. But Matel in this movie claims as if they invented fashion doll and before that everyone only played with baby dolls. 2: Lilli was created by a woman called Reinhard Beuthien. But Ruth Handler, who is like a god in the movie copied Beuthien's work. 3: The creation of barbie doll by Mattel led to bankruptcy of the company that created Bild Lilli dolls. Also, there were a lot of attempts by mattel to tarnish the image of charecter Lilli by projecting her as a prostitute. 4: After the company went south, Mattel acquired the rights to Bild Lilli in 1964.

Even with all the overwhelming praise it got opening weekend I had no idea what to expect going in to see Barbie. And yet I haven’t laughed at a comedy this hard that wasn’t a Jackass movie in almost a decade!! There were moments I couldn’t breathe because I was laughing so hard. If this movie is not nominated for a ton of Oscars at the upcoming Academy Awards it proves they truly don’t like comedies. Also I want to see a duet of I’m Just Ken and Peaches from The Super Mario Bros movie at the Oscars!

@utsavbhattacharya281 Well, he did do an intentionally camp performance that was actually good. That is very difficult to do. Honestly, I don't think we respect the acting skills required to pull off a comedy enough. Almost all the acting awards go to people who ugly cry or scream in their films. A lot of good comedies and horror films get overlooked for not being "real cinema." I think this film deserves several nominations, and for sure, a costuming and production design win

The key thing I took away from Barbie was that the point of Toys or dolls like Barbie is teaching you to grow. The movie at its core is about growth as a person and finding your place in the world.

It's ironic how people criticise Barbie for having unrealistic body expectations (though as Jonathan from Mended Light pointed out, no one criticises He-Man for having unrealistic body expectations for men) when it turns out in the 70s, as well as being investigated by the IRS, Ruth Handler started a new company with someone called Peyton called RuthonCorp where they designed and manufactured realistic, comfortable and durable breast prosthetics known as 'Nearly Me'.

@@mischr13 It was for women who'd undergone a mastectomy for breast cancer. Ruth Handler herself had undergone a mastectomy for breast cancer, that's how she found out about the limitations for prosthetics. They mention her mastectomy in the movie. She ended up dying of colon cancer (specifically complications of surgery). Mattel for a while, it turns out, also had a practice of working with a cancer hospital or research company and would send 'Brave Barbie' to families who had a family member undergoing treatment for cancer. Brave Barbie was thin, her clothes hung, she was bald and had two wigs. But she had 'brave' and 'beautiful' on written on her shirt.

They're both dolls and fictional characters, majority of women and children don't feel insecure about Barbie lmaoo. All my body image issues came from real life people and social media, not Barbie.

Allan and Midge are both huge deep cuts about the Barbie toy line. He was introduced as a friend to Ken in the 60s and disappeared after just a couple of years. Midge was indeed pregnant and she was married to Allan when he was brought back in the 90s

This was everything I'd never expect from a Barbie Movie. being a "boy" and wanting to play with dolls I identify with Ken, being Trans and wanting real parts I identify with Barbie. It was too good that some people were taken off guard and got defensive but it feels like the hate hype has mostly dissipated.

This film had no obligation to be this good. They could have just put something out there, get a big weekend or two, and turn a profit. But they really knocked it out of the park. I never would have thought that between the attempts for G.I. Joe, He-Man, and Transformers films over the years, representing MY childhood, it would be the Barbie film which really stood out to me as something special. What I Wanted: "Be better than G.I. Joe and Transformers" What I Got: "This is one of my favorites of 2023!"

This movie is so culturally important especially now when women’s rights are under attack. The point so beautifully illustrated in this movie is that the patriarchy does a disservice to men and women. Every second of this movie is intentional while being accessible and visually stunning. Greta is a genius and Margot is a gift.

So one could say it’s saying “bye baby,” followed with the title intro and as we all know the saying “hi Barbie!”

I feel so innocent, lol. I definitely didn't know what sex was, so that didn't make an appearance in my Barbie plots. It started with Barbie and Ken being married, but then Teresa moved in with them and Barbie and Teresa fell in love and had a child (Kelly) together, don't ask how xD, but Ken was totally okay with that and continued living with them. Also they all ran a ranch together, so 90% of the drama was stuff like horses getting injured or a foal getting born...😂 I think I had like twice as many Barbie horses as I had actual Barbie dolls...

The idea of having more than one "adult" doll of this style, when I acquired one in the mid/late 1960s, would have blown my mind. I had a single "Sindy" [1963, Pedigree UK before it was bought by Hasbro], the cheaper alternative, and no accessories were available unless I made them. And I was a privileged child where I grew up...

They don't understand what politics are. They think "politics" means "opinions I disagree with". If the video games and toys espoused their own personal politics, they'd be fine with it.

Being a Potterhead; when Ken shouts "Ken is me!!" going down the slide, it reminds me of Dobby squeeking "Dobby is free!!" at the end of COS. Their voices filled with wonder and joy! Beautiful.

Whole story or adventure was mirroring the girl turning into adulthood in real life. And therefore, in many non-english speaking countries meanings just flies overhead and does not translated easily.

The main point of the movie is that dotted line in the ocean east of China on the World Map in Weird Barbie's house. See it? At 7:11 On real maps it's called, "The Nine-Dash Line" and it declares that the South China Sea is the property of China, not Viet Nam. The Barbie story is merely a distraction. Who owns the South China Sea? The U.N. says Viet Nam. China says China. Each of us must decide for ourselves!

You don’t have to pay bail for a shoplifting ticket and certainly not for self defense. They’d charge you with shoplifting, and release you with a court date. Not that I’ve shoplifted, but I got kids, brothers, etc. anyway, point is you would absolutely be released with a court date and without paying anything until after your court date if arrested for the things they were arrested for. In fact, depending on the state/county, they might just write you a ticket with a court date and wouldn’t even take you to jail for shoplifting, similar to a traffic ticket but for criminal court where you have to show up for court and plead guilty/not guilty, after which either a fine would be set or a court hearing depending on your plea, you couldn’t just plead guilty through paying the fine and forgo court. But, point is, they’d either never take you to jail in the first place or release you immediately afterwards if arrested for a first time shoplifting charge. The first time assault charge as well, and hopefully with an apology since she was sexually assaulted first and they arrested the wrong person.

I don't think it's a hateful movie it's just a confused mess. It feels like it's trying to poke fun at everyone while not trying to piss anyone off. And it'll preach all of these messages then just backtrack on them.

I don’t think it promotes hatred towards men, but rather points out lots of problems women have to deal with under the patriarchy and humanizes both men and women. Barbie Land is a direct parody of the real world; it is the reverse where women are in power and men are only valued for how they treat women. Though this aspect was a way of helping men understand how women feel in the real world by placing them in women’s shoes, I think a lot of people overlooked it and saw it as the movie promoting a matriarchy instead. They would sympathize with and relate to Ken but not connect the dots that it’s how women feel all the time and that it was intended as a moment for them to understand rather than think women are trying to put them down. Simultaneously, by directly placing Ken’s in the same boat as women in the real world, the movie is not vilifying men but in fact showing that both men and women are human. The roles could have been reversed; men are not inherently domineering or power-hungry. Sorry for that spiel lol I hope that perspective helped!

@@zachsutton6195 backtrack? How so? And it’s funny you mention “not wanting to piss anyone off” when so many men got offended anyway. It’s either they’re hyper sensitive and insecure babies and it’s a miracle they’re still surviving (but I guess their family and patriarchy coddles them so they survive, proving the power of influence, patriarchy, and wives/mothers protecting men)…or it wasn’t pulling punches at all. Some ppl felt it was the perfect amount of sass and criticism, and were amazed Mattel let them do it. But some friends also said it pandered too much to men as well. Either way, even if you’re pulling punches or not, in what way does it backtrack? Unless you’re claiming this cus you came away with the wrong message and therefore they did “backtrack” on a message they never intended to make.

I totally appreciate what they were going for but it was either too heavy handed or just didn't make much sense to me
