Bark Grafting Persimmon trees for wildlife and habitat improvement.
Bark Grafting Fruit Trees.
Today we are trying our hand at Bark Grafting a persimmon tree. This is our first time trying this and I would like to say that I am by no means an expert. This technique should work for grafting fruit trees and by that, I mean most fruit trees.
I am wanting to share my experience so that it might inspire some of you to try it as well. It was much easier than I thought it would be but now I just have to wait to see if the graft takes.
In order to graft, you need two things. You need something to graft onto, which they call a rootstock, and you need the grafting material which is called a Scion wood. Scion wood is the first thing you need. It will be harvested in the dormant season, which is winter. When all the sap is in the roots. I personally bought this scion wood that I am using in this video. The reason is they have characteristics that I wanted to change this persimmon tree into. I also have harvested my own scion wood from some persimmon trees about 20 mins away on some family land. The next thing is the rootstock. I am using an already grown tree. I picked this tree because it has a bad limb structure. It is also a male persimmon tree that will not produce fruit. You can graft a female scion onto a male tree and it will produce fruit. That is the goal anyway. Follow along on this series to see how the outcome comes to fruition (no pun intended :))

Best Deer scent on the market-EverCalm from Conquest amzn.to/2x50U6a
This stuff works!
Wildlife Research Trails End 307 amzn.to/2wsJixm
My next favorite deer scent. Can use this one or EverCalm all season with success.
Wildlife Research Scent Wicks amzn.to/2x4vywm
Use to put your scent out. Tampons work great too if you are man enough to buy them lol.
Primos Control Freak Deodorant: amzn.to/2jqYHNs
This deodorant goes on smoothly keeps you from smelling foul in the field. Works great. The Hunter Specialties stick is really hard and doesn’t go on as well as this one.
Hunter Specialties Scent Wafers (Cedar) amzn.to/2flNo4Q
Great natural cover scent
Hunter Specialties Scent Wafers (Pine) amzn.to/2wYZmeT
Primos “The Original Can” Doe in estrus call amzn.to/2wZUoOV
I have been using one of these for a long time. Called up many deer with it. Get the newer model that is posted here. The older one had too long of a note that can sound like a doe in distress. The newer fixed this issue. I have the older one and you have to make the call cut the note shorter.
Bug Tamer Jacket amzn.to/2wvaN9J I have had one of these since the mid 90’s. I use it every year during bow season and beginning rifle season. I use this along with a thermacell. This jacket is cool because of the netting and mosquitos cannot bite you through it. Love this thing.
Thermacell Portable Mosquito Repellent amzn.to/2x28jUB These things work. When it on you can see the mosquitoes flying around but they do not get closer than 3 to 4 feet from you. I use this along with my bug tamer jacket to combat mosquitos. No deet for me.
Frog Toggs Rain suit amzn.to/2ydiJOU This is what I use when it is raining. It's very lightweight. It is loud at first but after you wear it and get it broken in, it will quiet down some.
Fishing
Skorch Dry Bag for kayaking amzn.to/2Dl05X4
I use this exact dry bag to keep a change of clothing in my kayak at all times. You never know when you may take a dunk. It is better to be prepared.
Z-Man trd finesse | PB&J color amzn.to/2wuCbEW
I absolutely love these. Peanut butter and Jelly is my fav color. The green pumpkin and June bug are next. They last 10 times longer than any other plastics and they catch fish when the going gets tough. Pair them with a Z-man shroomz head
Z-Man Shroomz Head 1/10 oz with weed guard amzn.to/2x7nVW4

Yes I am still working at it. This one didn’t take. I have tried twice so far. I think I didn’t make my scion flat enough so I will give it another go this spring! Thanks buddy.

Thanks so much. This one is a great saw but it doesn't actually fold. It has a leather holster it goes in. I think this company makes some great folding saws though.

How did the grafts work out!!! From everything I’m reading, sounds like my persimmon seeds that have germinated make the best rootstock money can buy! Then all I need to do is just like you stated, find trees that are heavy producers and also late dropping and then graft those varieties onto most and then also graft a handful of known male trees so that I know exactly which trees will be males and where they need to be centrally located. How did they work so far for you?!?

Yes the the seeds you sprouted will make great rootstock. Unfortunately my grafts failed. I need to try it again. Thanks for checking out the content.

That sir was a brilliant way to graft was there a reason why you chose that particular way of grafting and the tape did you choose that type for a reason sir

This actually didn’t take but this way should work. I am still learning but this is a easy way to graft if you have a bigger tree. You can also top work limbs but I want this tree to be 100% this variety. I think my scion wasn’t flat enough on the cut so I have to get that right. You need the cambium layers from the tree and the scion to be touching do nutrients can flow from one to the other. I used the flagging tape because that’s what I had on hand. It works good and also helps me be able to see where the tree is from a distance if I have one in the woods. Basically just makes it easier to find. I’ll be trying again this spring. I ordered the scion wood so it might have gotten dried out during shipping. I’ll get some off my property this time. Thanks 🙏

Sorry it didn’t take… I am going to try grafting my native persimmon today with cuttings from a chocolate persimmon… I collected cuttings the first week of January. It’s now the end of March I’m hoping the bark is slipping… timing is everything when grafting… good luck on your next try.

I tried four persimmon trees on my property using late drop scion wood I found in a park near me. All four grew amazingly well - the branches that grew were 12 - 18 inches long. Fantastic success. Then all four died. I have no idea why. But I'll try again this year.
