My grandpa died a few months ago, he left behind a red Yamaha rx50 special in his shed, I thought it seemed cool so I decided I would try to refurbish it with these videos as my guide. I look forward seeing how my bike will turn out

When you start riding it: give it an oil change ride it slowly to get it warmed up. Idle needs to be turned down a bunch. Also make sure you new air filter looks kind of the same as the original one, so that your air/fuel mixture will be the same. 2strokes and especially 50cc’s are very sensitive for the air/fuel mixture. Good luck it looks awesome and runs good in neutral!

Great video dude - we've all been there - air, fuel and spark (and oil) just like the ABC thing from first aid training. I'd also run it a little rich with oil seen as though its been sat for so long - then after the tank runs dry switch back to what you'd normal run.... Awesome video dude

Don't beat yourself up brother no one could expect a precious owner not actually putting an air filter on. Leason learned next time you know trust your instincts. Glad you got it running and like I said last time pm me if your handle bars are 7/8" and I'll send you an old pair of xs650 handle bars to donate to the project. Rather you use them then collect dust in my shed.

I am going to be starting to do this with my own 1983 Yamaha RX50 in the next couple weeks. Its been 10 years since it ran.

Great little bike! Great job on starting it.. Make it original throughout the air/ exhaust...the Yamaha engineers always knows the best!.. Tried a lot of dt's back in the day, and such many guys destroyed the bikes with tinkering with the air/exhaust..find the sweet spot for the air/fuel, and your bike will do great!.. as always very amusing videos, thanks!..

The petcock has a built in fuel filter, make sure you clean it. It’s that bolt that hangs down when it’s attached to the tank.

Nice! The repacked and installed silencer should add top end speed compared to without. Mine did only about 45 without, but 55 to 60 with it installed. See if hotrod YSR parts are available and fit. Boysen reeds should make it happy!

I always at least spray some kind of lube down the plug hole evencif only wd and mixed or regular gas in some kind of spray bottle works well for starting i never use carb cleaner

I have one of these mopeds their a ton of fun, mine also didn’t have an air filter in the box and am unsure if it ever came with one haha. These bikes also have oil pumps so you don’t have to mix the gas if it works... 😭

Has a very similar engine to a Yamaha dt50mx I've got one my self I restored, it sounds awesome

Had to go through a lot of the same stuff with my MX 175. You shouldn't complain about there not being any air filter, whatever was left you probably vacuumed up, haha. Same thing happened with mine, a mouse lived in it, runs like a champ now though

when you clean a carb, its really best to remove the jets and make sure you can see light through them also, let a 2 stroke warm up before you rev it please for the love of god. It'll cause some serious cold scoring if you keep doing that to your bikes. I'm not trying to sound like a know it all as i do not know it all. I'm just trying to share what i do know

Have to watch the big filters, more air means less fuel. Don't want to run it lean vary long. I'd stick with the OEM and make a filter. Thanks so much!

Also, carb cleaner corrodes anything rubber, probably best to not put it down the rubber intake😂

The carb breather hose looks more like the feed from the 2 stroke oil pump because of the oil leaking out of it when you pulled it off. Luckily this bike uses the RD/RZ50M motor so parts should be easy to find globally on E-Bay. There's nothing like bringing an old bike back to life.

Hey if you keep the universal air filter like you have on it now then you'll have to re-jet the carb for the extra air flow.

Don't worry, it was only around 50 kicks of dirt, dust, gravel, weeds, pine needles and squirrel shit injection into the crank case!

After watching ur video feel like buying an old Yamaha enticer(125)loved the model and restoring it, wonder if spare parts will get or not

Things you do to get an old 2 stroke ready. 1-clean the gas tank 2-clean the carb 3-change the oil And check compression and spark ........

You'll see worse cleanups. As for the air cleaner, a piece of foam cut to fit inside the air-box with a very light coating off oil much like a lawnmower will probably suffice as long as it traps airborne particulates from entering the carb. is all your need. Keep learning. Also may want to watch musti 1. Narrangansett Bay.

Have you seen the you tube channel by mustie1? Where he is he always checks for mice nests in anything he works on. Good luck with the rest of the rebuild.

Doesn't it have an oil tank for the 2 stroke oil? My 1964 100c Twin Jet did. Then no premix needed.
