BARN FIND ŠKODA 105- Rebuilding the brake calibers

In this video I begin the rebuilding the braking system on my Skoda 105 Estelle...
The car is a low mileage barn find that has been abandoned for many years and a braking system does not like sitting for long, so I decided to rebuild everything.
The calibers and master cylinder and rear brakes are going to be changed.
This video is only on the front calibers, and actually due to a mishap on the right side I only rebuild the left one in this video.
It gets new seals and a good clean and even a powder coating!
Unfortunately I made a mistake on my DJI Osmo pocket and messed the focus settings up, therefor much of this video is out of focus... It is completely my own fault.. Have a glass of wine before watching and it wont matter much... ;)

Another great video, thank you. Fully agree with your recommendation about removing pistons, compressible fluids (like air) are much less controlled and therefore potentially dangerous than incompressible (like grease) so although it 'wastes' good grease, it's better than risking your fingers or worse. At least the used grease can be used again to coat and protect breaks lines! Looking forward to the next one!

Yea... just thinking about using air gives a sharp pain in my fingers! :O Good idea for using the dirty grease!
@Ragnar8504

I suppose you could use a liquid, possibly water instead of air or grease. Depending on where you live, water pressure from the tap might actually be enough.

@@Ragnar8504 Good idea... I was also thinking to modify and old jack and using hydraulic oil... or even just old dot4! :D

I put the caliper in electrolisis for a few hours. It frees the piston and takes off the rust.

Thanks for the video. They remind me of working on my Skodas years ago. My uncle used to help me a lot and the work you have done on your 105 reminds me or working with him. Even with my limited mechanical skills I used to do a lot of jobs (after some some guidance!). Your videos are really clearly explained. I really enjoy them. Looking forward to seeing the Skoda buzzing along you local roads!

these videos bring back memories of my days with these cars and so basic and easy to work with and in the years i owned one did every job you could think of and for me they were simple yet strong build and looked after enough they were bomb proof and a brilliant budget car as everything could be done yourself if you had good mechanic skills

another good step made and wont be long before its on the road and you will probably have to strip down the carburetta and rebuild it with new seals as this was the cause of many bad running issues on these cars and will certainly need doing on this one after being stood for so long but great progress being made on this car brilliant
@SeasideGarage
@SeasideGarage 3 года назад
Yes I think you are right... But on this project I am trying to let the car know what it needs before doing it... But it would surprise me very much if the carb is fine without even a clean! :) Thanks!

Enjoying your vids buddy 👍 Ive just gone through this myself on my s100... Even down to having a damaged piston carrier as well haha.. I managed to get a second hand pair that are currently away for plating :) I can strongly recommend getting a heavy duty hub puller for the rear drums (the type that bolt on to the wheel studs) then load it up and add a bit of heat and it should come off 👍👍. Keep up the good work. Rob

Hey Rustycools! Thanks! glad you like them! I am trying to get the drums off, but I quickly realised it wont bodge without a good sturdy puller... so i am waiting to get one now.. :)

Interestingly the late 80s Škodas 130 received four piston caliber which were really fancy for such a simple car!

I’m running into the exact same issue with my Skoda’s calipers right now haha! I’m working on a 120, right front caliper has the bleeder absolutely seized. Tried all the tricks in the book, only managed to mangle the bleeder. Replacement calipers are almost impossible to come by, I’m thinking of modifying the car to fit another type of caliper.
@timhancock6626
@timhancock6626 3 года назад
Cotter pins are wedge shaped and solid and used on old bicycle cranks to hold the pedal arms on the crank by interference fit. These are split pins. Very sorry about caliper 2, but it's a hazard. I have successfully removed sheared off bleed screws by heating the whole assembly then lots of penetrating fluid then tapping an oversize Allen key/ hexagon into the hole and winding it out. It doesn't always work, but I've had more success than failure with this method.
@SeasideGarage
@SeasideGarage 3 года назад
Aha thanks for the clarification! Yes I´ve had luck to remove the before, but this time it just went wrong.... :( I could get a pretty clever repair kit for the bleeder screw, but it was more then 100 euroes... :O

Again what was criticised as the time to be "crude outdated engineering" can translate as straight forward mechanicals that the DIY-er can tackle at home. Been years since I messed with my cars ( thanks to company car provision ) but going back to the days when I did all you have done on the Skoda is just instantly recognisable. The more this car develops the more I ask why I never tried one myself.

Ah, I was wondering what the oven was for, I thought you had it there in case of needing an emergency roast dinner or something... :D As for the brake rebuild, looks like they were definitely the culprit for the "worn clutch" reason for it being parked up, they were pretty bad even for something having stood for years, still, they'll be rolling free and stopping when they're supposed to now... :D

Oh my Skoda 105S !!! Whatever happened to you ???? Oh yes, that's right, I scrapped you after your cylinder head gasket blew and you filled my workplace with oily smoke as you idled outside. @@SeasideGarage I regret that I bought a 3 year old Fiat Panda rather than a 1 year old Skoda 120. The Panda needed structural welding after 18 months, I think the Skoda would have survived longer. I went with the Fiat because the Wall had just come down and the Skoda spare parts had hugely increased in price....
