Barn Find CB750 gets a new chain and sprockets FINALLY after putting it off for a while. With 3 master links, lots of slack, and endless stretching I was very worried the chain would snap and put a hole in my case. I finally bought some new sprockets to pair with a new chain I had on hand and now I can have peace of mind when I ride.
New ratio is 17/48 compared to the original 18/48 combo. I really like it.

Rear sprocket used: www.dimecitycy...
If you are searching for a chain for your sohc CB750 you will need a 530 size in 102 length.

I bought a new 1973 Honda 750 which I still have. I put 173,000 on It by 1995 my good friend had terminal cancer and wanted me to have his 1981honda goldwing which I still ride with over 270,000 thousand miles on it now. I am 82 have been riding since 1955 thankful I still can. I have rode motorcycle over a million miles so far.

@calvinvaughn2195 Год назад
You are so right about the possibility of the chain going through the case. My 1973 did that at about 80,000 miles a guy I new back then was an absolute welder welded the crack up. The bike now has 173,000 on it with the cases welded together. I am writing this to warn you of the other major problems with lot years is the cam chain tesnor will start to flake apart. When running at high r.p.m. it will carry the flakes up the oil passage to the cam block the oil flow and cause the cam to seize in the head. Change the tension wheel on the cam chain before you destroy a good engine.

Couple tips . I was Honda mechanic 70-80 For broken case .I would remove gas tank and oil out of engine then put a strap on rear wheel and lift it with lift. Clesn broken case up ruff surface up . Clean again then used JB Weld as someone else suggested. Let set for 12 hr Then ready to go saved customer $$$ Tip on connector link when you put clip on look at it .When made they are stamped. You have round corners on one side and square corners . Square corner side goes to outside helps from coming off. If you work on transmision there are circlip that holds gears on shafts . Use same idea circlips has the same round corners and square. Square end goes on pressure side off shaft. I fixed many transmission's for clips not installed correctly. People speed shifting while racing will more likely to have this problem. We done alot back then. Keep up the great video's .

I was riding my 78 Honda CB 750 from Kentucky, to Ohio, to Alabama and didn't want any problems so I took it to a Kawasaki dealer and had them replace the chain and sprockets. I got all loaded up on the bike, left Ft. Knox merged onto the interstate, set the throttle lock, leaned back on my duffel bag and bang. Just as you said... the master link separated and yes, got all gummed up on the drive spocket and knocked a hole the size of two bottle caps in my transmission case. Ultimately had a machine shop just weld a piece of aluminum over the hole while I was home on leave and drove it to Alabama pretty much without incident. Once in a while it would pop out of fifth gear which required me to shift back into fifth gear. Should have done the work myself.

I was thinking the same thing the other day. My first bike, a mid eighties Yamaha 450 something, didn't run well enough for me to learn to ride on. I gave it to my dad before moving out of state. He rode it to work a few times, still running rough, but sold it off after laying it down on a patch of sand on the turn leaving his workplace. He had to blip the throttle to keep it running and this particular blip made the rear end come out from under him. No damage to him and only a couple scratched on the bike but he decided to pass it along to someone who could fix it. After watching these videos, I would put money on it just needing a carb rebuild. I remember trying to buy a rebuild kit for it back then but the local bike shop looked at me like I was crazy when I asked to buy one. That was back in 97, I think. lol

U should not reuse an old master lick as it too has been stretched the same as the chain. Looks like you could have made the chain shorter as well. She's sitting pretty far back in the adj. travel. Also, you do know that you can use the 620's from the 77-78F's as well. Don't know if you had one. I lost an Eng. casing on my F after I installed a big bore kit to mine the first time. I left it and just closed the hole with a piece of can and JB weld. It worked great for about an yr. Then I replaced it when I upped the CC's to 915cc.
@BrickHouseBuilds
@BrickHouseBuilds Год назад
I didn't reuse any links. That was a new one. Possibly could have removed another link but its also due to the smaller front sprocket. Id rather have the 530 for now being easier to source parts for.

Hi I am in the UK and have an ex US 1975 CB 750F The very first Supersport. Unfortunately for me mine had a chain break in the past, crankcases took a blow. I did not find it on initial inspection. Lots of JB Weld!! someone in the past had repaired it. Not as lucky as you. The bike goes well despite this. I love your videos on the CB 750 K6 they are a great help to me, I love that you don't just throw money at it. My bike has lower gearing than the K bikes, but runs 17 T /48T like you are running now. At first I did not like it but the more Ive ridden it, the torque for real road use is great, put it in 5th and that's it.

Well thank you. This bike is good practice in just letting some things be. I have many builds going that require a ton of parts and money where this bike lets me take a break from that. Apparently the original 69-70/71 bikes had a 16t front and 46r which is a similar ratio to the 17/48 but people broke chains a lot.

I think its the right amount of change. Not drastic but really hills are different now. I never felt the bike needed more power but it just feels better with the 17. Id give it a shot. You can always go back and you are only out $20

Nice work indeed, do you have any videos on testing a magneto? I have a vintage Honda scooter with a weak spark, I tried a new coil and still has the problem. I’m thinking that it might be the stator, I tested the three wire coming out of the stator and they all have continuity. Any advice would be helpful, thanks and ride safe. That back wheel looks scary.
@BrickHouseBuilds
@BrickHouseBuilds Год назад
I do not have a specific video for your application but your service manual outlines exactly how to test it.

@@BrickHouseBuilds I have factory service manual and I tested the three wires and they all have continuity but there’s no specific way on how to test. I tested mine on the bike with the three wires unplugged but not sure if I should test them with the magnets off the bike, this shop manual is giving out more questions than answers. I cleaned and gapped the points to specs already I guess I’ll try checking them again, thanks.

@@BrickHouseBuilds hey BJ, I love those Duros, but do you know of any decent vintage looking tires that are tubeless? My bike has non-spoked rims, so I'd prefer not to run tubes to make for easier roadside repair in the event of a puncture. Any recommendations?

No chain on my mc, but very nice educational video on how it’s done. I’m going to guess and say chains with master links that come with a clip are very reliable. I did watch another RU-vidr replace a chain, and he peened (?) over the pins (?) with a tool. I guessing again that you can get both types depending on what you want. Nice video, you’re a real mechanic, I can see the scars on your hands !! 👍😎🫡
