In this episode Gav and Jimmy prepare to replace the pistons and liners in the tractors engine before discovering why it's very important to check the main bearings and housings and before rebuilding an engine.
Old tractors can sometime run in their own tracks.
This project follows a Barn Find 1953 Ferguson TEF 20 Little Grey Fergie. This vintage tractor was found in a hedge where it had sat for 31 years. Can Jimmy de Ville (from Goblin Works Garage) and Gav (former RAF engineer) bring it back to life using their engineering, building, fabrication and make do and mend skills?
There might be extreme, dangerous and crazy measures needed to breath life back into this retro, vintage vehicle and once farming extreme machine.

I've always had a fascination with diesel engines. My folks had a diesel VW Rabbit back in the 70s as well as a International Harvester 40hp diesel farm tractor from the 1960s. I later had an old M-B 300D (N/A). I've always thought those old Lister one or two cylinder cold-start diesel engines that people use for generators were so unusual and very scarce in the USA. I'd love to see you work on one of those or and old Lister-Petter diesel engine in the future. I can hardly wait for Episode 4!

I love the smell of old engine oil in the morning. The Ferguson standard Perkins was built simple so farmer's could fix it himself. In the field. Most parts can be obtained from Argline. My brother's got a 1945 Ferguson Tea it started out life as a Petrol Parafin and was converted to The P3 cylinder Perkins . He is currently looking for a front axle support. He did receive a front axle support from a T20 but it has slightly different front axle support. I am sure i can do something with it as I have both now . It had spent most of its life on the Isle of Skye Scotland. And now it's in a little place called Gairloch. We also have a 1958 Massey Ferguson 35 Perkins 152 Ad. tc guys and great work.👍👍

Fergie Thursday, shiny internals, tractor project almost dead in the water. But the biggest shocker of this episode has to be seeing Jimmy in a Kia 😂😂😂😂😜. Another great episode chaps 👍

Ah this was me at the start of lockdown getting my own Tef20 to run with an engine swap & a massive amount of head scratching when the cam jumped a couple of teeth-plenty more fun to come guys !

Looks like dissimilar metal corrosion to me. (Steel against aluminium) . Great episode as always and glad you can save the old girl. Found my original MF spanner yesterday with metric and imperial markings on the shaft. Can't wait for the next episode. Nice RAF coveralls Gav 😉

Next time, try a squirt of east start before stripping everything down. Nothing used to start on our farm without easy start. My old man used to swear by it! ☠️💨

Don't go anywhere near a rebuilt engine with Easy Start, if you do it right, timing, injectors etc it will start unaided by the Devil's spawn.

Anyone remember the old Renault R10 from the late 60s into the early 70s? Their engine had replaceable wet cylinder sleeves. They could be rebuilt multiple times if you could get hold of the parts. Parts availability was their biggest downfall for Renault in the USA.

Magnesium Elektron gearbox on later fergies, early had cast. Titanine on the gaskets to stop galvanic corrosion.

Loving this lads - brought up with Fergie 20s. A TVO and 2 Diesels. Oh - a small point 🤭 ... the opening sequence - that tractor engine sound ... that’s a 3-cylinder MF 35 ( a 35X maybe ?! ). How about the sound of a diesel 20 starting ?? There’s plenty of them out there!! Please? Oh, pretty please 🙏🏼???!! 😆

I have got a tef gearbox that has done the same in the bottom, the top looked fine cleaned out the box and found the reverse gear carrier had been eaten away as well as the bottom

Hi Jimmy I have finally got the pistons out of my 52 bramble find ted but it cost me a bent conrod and am trying to locate one and I noticed that when you got your new bearing carriers that the chap had some conrods do you have a link for please. By the way my bearings are also made of cheese but I hope they are ok!!

@@jimmydevillesgarage6585 Hi Yes I am working on a 1952 ted same as yours been in a bramble patch for about 40 years , I got the crank out today and the alloy bearing carriers seem usable pitted but where the oil pump goes is ok the bottom two holes are a bit suspect so fingers crossed (by the way the cog on the oil pump is only held on with a pin easer than taking of the pump to replace the timing chain but you probably found that out now you don't need to do it, sods law) sorry wondered of yes I am looking for a con rod for my tef . I used my MF35 and fixed a PTO from it to the PTO on the tef jacked up one back wheel of the 35 and used ground speed PTO in reverse . scary but it sort of worked . A friend of mine helps organise a tractor run for charity, this year I had my 3 tractors Ferguson ted20 , MF 35 . and a 302 Marshall may be next year ill have 4 , and if yours is ready you are invited . look up Stebbing Tractor Run . in Essex its good fun , hope you can help , regards Ian
