I rember walkin in farm supply in 92 with mom to get dads Christmas present he had been talkin bout which was this stihl name I just heard….026 was what we could afford and dad didn’t cut much so….12yrs old round $350 if I remember…still have the saw with grey case and original wrench ands been through many bar n chains upto 20” at 1 time…the 44 is the all around legend in Ky here where it’s just enough to log allday and not kill you packin it..man what a step back in time..
I bought mine in 1992 , no gold nuts, in Victoria Australia hi country. Still can pull the cord out off my hand if i don't think. I had three mods done from new , oil soaked air filter, longer bar and twin dog's. Fell big tree's, 6ft dia dry . It runs beautiful today and i have Never had to fix it . After a good hand sharpen it spits chips. I got to keep it after devorse ,still keeps me worm on lonely nights.
I’ve got two 10mm 044s bought them 10 years apart and the serial numbers were only three numbers apart, both HD filters Aussie delivery Got many Stihl’s still my favourite saw the 044.
Good stuff. Ran my ported 440 earlier this week, did a great job. Thanks for documenting this teardown. I was tempted by these myself ended up getting the 346 instead.
The reason the screws were gold is because they were anodized and not just plated. They were anodized to keep them from corroding in the holes due to galvanic action.
We also have other Stihl chain saws and other equipment, we are older and are still using all of the pieces we have, we don't use ethenol gas products in any of our equipment. We have been very happy with our Stihl products and hope to continue using that product. My favourite birthday or any other reason gift is usually a saw or knife or outdoor product, makes it easy for my hubby to buy me things, smile.
I love my 044...must be an early one...all bolts are gold...has a pleated filter with a prefilter...runs like a beast...has a 24” bar...and a 36” bar both are yellow...runs both just fine...🤣🤣🤣🤣

I ran a few of those they had a different air cleaner set up on them they were a very popular saw at that time. Very reliable and a good runner also pretty easy on gas. You could work all day with one on a gallon of gas.
Why would anyone in their right mind tear down a mint NOS 044, such a rare and desirable saw these days ? I still run a stock 028, 036 pro, 041AV, 044 slant fin and a new ms 250 ( which I hate ! ). Gary in Michigan.....login’ and sawmillin’ every day at 71 years old.

I have a first gen 10mm 044 and I’ve rebuilt it once and will keep it as long as I can get parts cause it’s a screamer power to weight ratio is hard t beat. Did a muffler mod and it really came alive👍 Thanks for the great video 👏
The gold hardware being referred to was Yellow Cadmium plating. Some where along the line yellow cad was found to be Carcinogenic and replaced with white cadmium. Aka Silver hardware.

Hi Redbull661, I have a 044 serial number 122893623 having problems starting it, think it's flooding almost tears my fingers out on kick back, had some work done on the carb last year, could it be the carb again or could it be an other issue, any thoughts on what it could be would be gratefully recieved.
